Chapter 44: The Lie Between Her Legs (Secrets don’t stay buried if heart's open) Damon’s arms were still around her. His breath warm against her neck. But his silence? It was ice. Aria pulled away slowly, enough to look up at him. “Damon?” she whispered. “Did you hear me?” His jaw clenched. “I heard you.” Her heart thudded. “And?” He stepped back, grabbing his pants, avoiding her eyes. “You shouldn’t have said it.” She blinked. “What?” He didn’t answer. Just moved through the room like a storm that hadn’t fully hit. “What do you mean?” she said, voice rising. He finally turned. “I told you—I take what I want. I never promised more.” The words slammed into her like a punch. “So that’s it? After all this—you’re still pretending this is just about s*x?” His expression didn’t change. But his eyes? Those betrayed him. They screamed everything he wasn’t saying. Aria shook her head, chest tight. “You’re lying.” “I’m protecting you.” “No. You’re protecting yourself.” She moved to him, bare, defiant. “You think you’re some monster I need saving from?” He didn’t flinch. “I know I am.” She reached for him. “Then ruin me, Damon. But don’t lie to me.” His hand caught her wrist—tight. Too tight. His eyes flared. “You really want to know the truth?” “Always.” He let go. And said the words that changed everything. “Cade’s not the only one who’s been lying to you.” Her stomach dropped. “What are you talking about?” He pulled open a drawer, revealing a thick black folder. Confidential. Marked with Cade’s name. Marked with hers. She took it with shaking hands, flipping through the pages. Dates. Emails. A contract. Her heart stopped. “You—” she choked out. “You knew from the beginning?” Damon’s voice was low. Hollow. “I was the one who told Cade to make you sign that damn contract.” Her legs gave out. He caught her before she hit the floor—but it didn’t matter. Because her soul had already crashed. “You were both playing me,” she whispered. “From the very start.” “I didn’t expect to feel anything,” he said. “But I did. I do. That’s what makes this so f****d up.” She slapped him. The sound echoed. So did the pain. And in that moment, Aria didn’t know who she hated more—him, Cade… or herself, for falling for both devils.
