"Nothing serous my child." Emily could see that her aunt was hiding something from her.
"Let's go and have a bite to eat." Said aunt Catherine trying to avoid Emily's question.
"I'll sorry, I have to go and see my friend." Emily kept on thinking about what her aunt Catherine told her about the divorce thing.
"Oh OK, then let me escort you out." She walked with her to the exit door, with her arm on her shoulder.
"Thank you." Emily knew that the next few minutes would be difficult.
"Who's taking you?"
"Ah don't worry, I will catch a taxi."
"You give me a call when you reach home my child." Aunt Catherine Kiss's Emily on her forehead.
"Thank you, aunt Catherine." Emily always take aunt Catherine like her own mother, she loved her very much.
Jonathan calls Emily
"Hello?"
"Well,hi how are you Jonathan?"
"Fine thank you, how have you been Emily."
"Not good I can't talk on the phone."
"How about meeting me at the ' Sweet people ' restaurant?" Jonathan's voice sounded so welcome. She told him she could be there in half an hour. It was only three streets from her aunt Catherine's house and was one of her favorite eating places, because sometimes they could go there with her family, specializing in cuisine.
She said "Good night" to aunt Catherine and Maureen. And felt Douglass watching her disapprovingly as she walked to the exit .
"Remember, aunt Douglass have a way with more than words, aunt Catherine. Give me a call when you feel like talking." She said noncommittally, sensing again that he assumed her worrying had more to do with Douglass.
Driving over to city shine town, her mind was full of the day's events. told that her aunt Catherine file for divorce, which as been a shock to her. But Emily was not surprised at her uncle supposed infidelity.
Emily drove through the wide street of city shine, almost oblivious to the other cars. Her thoughts turned to Douglass and the sarcastic innuendos at his place tonight. A traffic light turned to red and the drive slammed to his brakes.
Two pedestrians crossed in front of the car, shaking their heads. The drive mouthed a"sorry " and hope they understood.
"I have to got to get a hold of myself," she thought. Dinner with Jonathan would help her to relax. She smiled as a feeling of excitement.
She had worn a navy black linen suit and had quickly added some exotic, colorful, Peruvian jewelry. Reach at the restaurant.
Jonathan was in the foyer waiting and immediately walked forward to get her, taking both her hands.
"Emily!" He bent down and whispered, "you're looking lovely."
Their eyes met and Emily murmured, "thank you."
"Our table is ready." Jonathan put his arm around her shoulder and the maitre d' escorted them through the charming early African dining room to a corner table at the rear.
Emily remember her parents, when they could come at this place and have dinner.
"I remember my parents we used to come here."
"Listen Emily, everything is going to be fine, I promise you Emily."
"Thank you Jonathan, but my uncle is a very dangerous person and my aunt wanted to tell me something important and she just changed are mind after she told to uncle."
"I am sure it as to do with him."
They both looked around the quaint dining room. The diamond-paned Windows with their floral curtains sparkled in the candlelight, giving a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Flowers were massed in the fireplace, which was not needed on this hot, humid night.
Jonathan turned his attention to the menu.
"Everything is fantastic here.Emily you'll begin to look like a rail if you don't eat," Jonathan said quietly.
Emily raised her eyebrows and smiled. Leaning forward, she whispered, "thank you for your concern Jonathan." Her expression changed as she remembered Aunt Catherine, she kept having that feeling that something was wrong.
"What's wrong Emily?"
"Nothing, sorry you where saying?"
Jonathan said appreciatively, "you are very beautiful."
"Thank you, but my beauty only brings pain to me."
Jonathan replied concerned, "perhaps you and I could work together."
"I would love that. But my uncle his a very dangerous man."
The waiter took their order and they sat back, relaxed happy to be with one another. Emily is very beautiful that everyone in the restaurant was looking at her and she is very influential, there was a quality about her that remained unspoiled and it was this that attracted Jonathan.
"I'll sure all your efforts are going to pay off one of these days."
The waiter brought their hors d'oeuvres and they were silent for a few moments. Jonathan said suddenly, "Emil, have you never thought of marriage?"
She looked up, somewhat startled by his question.
"Why, of course, but I always wanted my marriage to be just like my mom and Dad, but I have so many other goals that I want to achieve first."
"You sound rather like me. I found myself so caught up in law, that there has been little time to establish lasting relationships. Do you have any regrets, Emily?"
"You are a very direct person, aren't you?" Emily said with a smile.
"My policeman's mind, I suppose."
"Well, yes, in some ways. When I see my sister and my aunt, she seems so happy. I love them both and they are the only family I have and sometimes I think how wonderful it would be if we stay together."
"Do you come from a large family?"
"No, just the two of us. Complete, absolute opposite and always have been."
"Sounds like my little sister and me, she is in America with her music."
"And doing remarkably well, too," Emily added. "I take it you do not approve of her style?"
"Oh, no, it's that-i like country music. It's his questionable lifestyle that concerns me. I'm a firm believer in not allowing your behavior to have a derogatory effect on someone else," Jonathan said thoughtfully. "Does that sound too pompous? I really didn't mean it to be..."
"It might be to some, but I think I understand. I remember being taught about being a 'stumbling block' to others. Often it seemed I was checked when I desperately wanted to do something , but which hurt a friend or another person."
Jonathan looked at Emily as the waiter brought entree and smiled. "For a first dinner date, I must say we are engaged in some rather heavy topics of conversation. I'msorry." Her dark, intense eyes met his.
"Please don't apologize, Jonathan. I'm enjoying our dinner immensely. Perhaps the two of us are rather alike in a way."
He smiled at her and felt the mutual attraction.
"I intend to see to it that you find time to enjoy yourself and forget the rigors."
"Well, I wish so ." she brushed the hair back from her eyes, realizing their friendship was advancing rather swiftly.
While they were eating, Emily was conscious of the eyes of other diners upon her. likewise, Emily sensed that the days ahead might not be easy for her.
Jonathan's voice brought her back to the charming atmosphere of the restaurant.
