Forgotten Souls

The room seemed to grow smaller, the walls closing in with each passing second. The students could feel the temperature dropping further, their breaths visible in the icy air. The figures surrounding them were not just shadows—they were memories, echoes of the students who had been trapped before, their hollow eyes burning with a desperate need to communicate. "Find the key... find the key..." they chanted in unison, their voices like a broken record, repeating the same words over and over again. The air was thick with their sorrow, their unfinished business. Maya, her hands trembling, stepped forward. "What do you mean? What key? How do we find it?" One of the figures—the one closest to Maya—raised its hand, pointing toward the farthest corner of the room. The air around it shimmered, like a distortion in reality itself. As the figure spoke, its voice was barely a whisper, but it felt like it was echoing inside their heads. "The key is hidden... where time itself is forgotten. Find the door. Unlock it before the room does." The figure then faded back into the shadows, leaving nothing but a faint whisper behind. The students exchanged confused glances, unsure of what it meant. Haru spoke first, his voice tense. "Where time is forgotten? What does that even mean?" "We need to keep looking," Ayumi said, her eyes sharp with determination. "There has to be something here, something we've missed." As the students began to search the room once more, Maya noticed something strange on the walls. The shadows that had seemed to shift and move now appeared to form symbols—odd, ancient markings that seemed to glow faintly in the dark. They were carved into the very walls, some barely visible, others more distinct. "Maya, look!" Ryuu called out, his voice rising in urgency. "Is that... is that writing?" Maya nodded, her pulse quickening. She moved closer to the wall, tracing her fingers along the symbols. "These look like... they’re not just random markings. They feel... ancient." "Wait a minute." Kaito crouched down, his sharp eyes focused on something near the floor. "There’s something here. A hidden compartment, behind the wall." He pushed against the stone, and with a creak, a small section of the wall slid open, revealing an old, dusty box. The air around them seemed to grow even colder as the box came into view. Maya felt a chill run down her spine, but she knew they had no choice. "Open it," Ayumi urged, her voice low but firm. Kaito hesitated for a moment, then lifted the box’s lid. Inside, there was a small, intricately carved key, its metal surface reflecting the faint light from the flickering overhead bulb. It seemed ordinary, but there was something unsettling about it. Something old. Something wrong. “This… this is the key?” Ryuu asked, his voice barely a whisper. Maya reached for the key, but as soon as her fingers brushed against it, a violent tremor shook the room. The shadows began to swirl faster, and the whispers grew louder, more frantic. “No! You mustn’t!” a voice screamed from within the walls, echoing with the agony of countless trapped souls. “The key will release it! The curse will be unleashed!” Suddenly, the room plunged into darkness, and the temperature dropped so low that they could see their breath hanging in the air. Maya felt a cold hand grip her wrist. She gasped, trying to pull away, but the hand tightened, pulling her deeper into the darkness. “Let her go!” Ayumi shouted, trying to reach her. But it was no use. Maya was being dragged toward the shadows, her feet slipping as she was pulled away from her friends. “Maya!” Kaito screamed. The voices of the trapped souls filled her ears, their whispers now turned to frantic screams. “You must leave! Leave now! Before it’s too late!” Suddenly, the shadows released her, and she stumbled back into the light, gasping for breath. The key fell to the ground, clinking softly on the wooden floor. “Are you okay?” Haru asked, rushing to her side. Maya nodded shakily, still trembling from the cold that had gripped her. “I... I don’t know what happened. It felt like they were trying to pull me into the darkness.” Kaito picked up the key, his eyes narrowed in suspicion. “This key... It’s not just a key. It’s a trap.” A sudden crash echoed from behind them, and the students turned around to see the filing cabinet in the corner topple over, revealing a hidden doorway. The door seemed to glow faintly, its edges shimmering with an unnatural light. “That’s it,” Ayumi said, her voice steady but full of determination. “That’s the door. The one we were meant to find.” “Are we sure we want to open it?” Ryuu asked, his voice filled with doubt. "What if it’s a mistake?" “We don’t have a choice,” Maya said, her voice firm despite the fear clawing at her chest. “If we don’t open that door, we’ll never escape. The room will claim us, just like it claimed the others.” The group gathered around the door, their hands trembling as they placed the key into the lock. The moment the key turned, the door creaked open with an ear-piercing screech, and the room seemed to collapse inward. A blinding light spilled from the doorway, filling the entire room with an overwhelming brightness. For a brief moment, there was nothing but silence. Then, a deep, guttural voice rumbled from beyond the door. “You’ve come far, but you are too late. The truth is not what you think.” The students froze, their eyes wide with fear as the light from the door grew stronger, pulling them toward it.
