Crossroads

The rain had turned to a needle-sharp drizzle by the time Aria reached the Cedar Falls Motel, its flickering neon sign casting a sickly green glow over the parking lot. Room 12’s door was slightly ajar, a sliver of yellow light cutting through the dark. Aria hesitated, her hand trembling on the damp doorknob. Inside, Chloe sat on the edge of the bed, her eyes red-rimmed, a half-empty coffee cup steaming beside her. “You look like hell,” Chloe said flatly, not looking up. Aria hovered in the doorway. “You drove six hours to tell me that?” “I drove six hours to *understand.*” Chloe finally met her gaze, and the raw hurt there made Aria’s chest ache. “Was it all a lie? The late-night rants about Ethan being an ‘ice statue in a suit,’ the way you’d gag when Mom hinted you’d make a cute couple—was that just *cover?*” Aria stepped inside, the door clicking shut behind her. “It wasn’t like that. I hated him until I… didn’t.” Chloe snorted. “Right. And that *hate* just magically turned into screwing him against his office window?” “It wasn’t *magic.*” Aria’s voice cracked. “It was… conversations. Arguments. Moments where I saw the person behind the CEO mask. I tried to fight it, Chlo. I swear.” Chloe stood abruptly, pacing the cramped room. “Do you love him?” The question hung in the air like a guillotine. Before Aria could answer, headlights swept across the curtains. Tires crunched gravel outside. --- **Ethan** He found them in the motel’s shadowed parking lot, Aria’s defiant silhouette framed by Chloe’s tear-streaked glare. Rain slicked his hair, his charcoal overcoat clinging to his shoulders as he stepped out of the rental car. “You,” Chloe spat, storming toward him. “You couldn’t just let her *breathe*, could you? Had to chase her down like one of your mergers?” Ethan didn’t flinch. “This isn’t a game, Chloe.” “No, it’s *worse.*” Her voice broke. “She’s my best friend. You’re my brother. How could you—” “Because I *love her.*” The words, sharp and uncalculated, silenced even the rain. Aria’s breath caught. Ethan never broke character—never showed his hand. But here he stood, jaw clenched, gray eyes blazing as he stared at Aria. “I didn’t plan it. I didn’t want it. But it’s real.” Chloe staggered back as if struck. Aria’s knees buckled, but Ethan closed the distance between them in three strides, his hands gripping her arms—not to pin her, but to steady her. “You left,” he growled, low enough that only she could hear. “You didn’t let me fix this.” “There’s no *fixing*,” she whispered. “I broke Chloe. I broke *us.*” His thumb brushed her wrist, a fleeting tenderness. “Then we break together.” --- **Jack** The poet found them hours later at the diner, Aria wedged between warring siblings in a sticky vinyl booth. He slid into the seat beside Chloe, nodding at Ethan’s glacial stare. “Heard the drama from Dot. Need a mediator?” “Need a bartender,” Chloe muttered, stabbing her pancake stack. Jack grinned, tossing a crumpled poem onto the table. *“Love is a wildfire in a drought / You can’t outrun the ash.”* Aria stiffened. Ethan’s gaze snapped to hers, electric and unyielding. “Stay out of it, Shakespeare,” Chloe snapped, but her lips twitched. --- **The Decision** Later, on the cabin’s porch, Aria watched Ethan pace like a caged wolf. “The board knows,” he said bitterly. “HR’s drafting a termination.” She froze. “What?” “I refused to deny it.” He stopped, his back to her. “They can fire me, but they won’t touch you.” “*What?*” She grabbed his arm, spinning him around. “You’re giving up your *company*? For *me?*” “For *us.*” His hands cradled her face, rough and desperate. “I spent a decade building an empire. But you…” His thumb traced her lip, the ghost of a touch. “You’re the only thing that’s ever felt like *mine.*” Somewhere behind them, a car door slammed—Chloe, leaving for the city. Aria’s heart splintered. “Go to her,” Ethan murmured, releasing her. “Fix what I broke.” She gripped his wrist. “What if I want both?” His laugh was raw. “Since when do you settle for anything less?”
