Someone screamed outside. I ran to the window. “What happened?” Kael was already halfway across the room. “Stay here,” he said. “Not a chance.” He paused, tense. “You know I’m not just going to listen to you, right?” I folded my arms. His jaw worked. “Elara, this isn’t a game.” “I know.” I followed him out anyway. In the courtyard, two guards were dragging a man across the gravel. He wore the same black clothes as the men who attacked us in the forest. A sick feeling hit my stomach. “Is he one of them?” Kael nodded. “They found him near the eastern wall.” The man jerked hard against the guards. “Let me go!” he yelled. One of them forced him to his knees. I kept staring. “Is he the one who attacked me?” Kael stepped between us. “You don’t need to see any of this, Elara.”
