Chapter 24

Ronan pov Mother’s room was brighter than I’d seen it in weeks. Someone had opened the curtains, allowing the afternoon sunlight to stream across the floor. The heavy smell of sickness and medicine that had permeated the space for months seemed lighter somehow. Or maybe that was hope talking. I stood in the doorway, hesitant. Afraid that the healer’s report had been wrong. That nothing had changed. Elena had sacrificed herself for nothing. Then I saw the figure sitting in the chair beside Mother’s bed. Juliet. Of course. She looked up as I entered, her face brightening. “Ronan! I was hoping you’d come. I’ve been sitting with your mother, the healers said she might wake soon.” She gestured to the chair on the other side of the bed. “Please, join me.” I wanted to ask her to leave.
