CHAPTER 02

CHAPTER TWO The tension in Noxana’s apartment was thick enough to cut. She stood a few feet away from Erydan, her arms crossed defensively as she studied the man who had turned her life upside down. “Start talking,” she demanded. “And don’t leave anything out.” Erydan leaned against the wall, his posture deceptively calm despite the storm brewing in his eyes. “They sent someone to you, didn’t they? A woman—cold, calculating, probably dressed like she was heading to a board meeting.” Noxana hesitated. “Her name was Seraphine. She said you’re a fugitive.” His jaw tightened. “Figures. She’s one of their best operatives—skilled at twisting the truth to suit their agenda. Did she tell you why they’re after me?” “She said you’re dangerous. That you’ve committed crimes. Smuggling, espionage.” Her voice faltered. “Is it true?” Erydan pushed off the wall, stepping closer. “I’ve done things I’m not proud of. But everything I’ve done was to survive—and to stop people like her.” “People like her?” He nodded. “Seraphine works for an organization called The Dominion. They operate in the shadows, manipulating governments, corporations, and anyone else they can control. They use people, Noxana—exploit them until there’s nothing left.” Her stomach churned. “And you? What’s your role in all this?” “I used to work for them,” he admitted, his voice heavy with regret. “I was young, desperate, and they offered me a way out of a life I didn’t want. But once I realized what they were doing, I tried to leave. That’s when they turned on me.” Noxana’s mind raced. “And now they think I’m involved because I met you.” Erydan’s gaze softened. “I didn’t mean to drag you into this. When I saw you at the bar, you looked… lost. Like you needed someone to remind you that you’re worth more than the pain you were carrying. I never planned for any of this to happen.” Despite herself, Noxana felt a flicker of warmth at his words. But the danger he represented was impossible to ignore. “What happens now?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “They’ll keep coming,” Erydan said. “Seraphine won’t stop until she gets what she wants—me. And she won’t care who gets hurt along the way.” Noxana’s legs felt weak. She sank onto the edge of the couch, burying her face in her hands. “This can’t be happening.” “It is,” Erydan said gently, sitting beside her. “But you don’t have to face it alone.” She lifted her head, meeting his gaze. “Why should I trust you?” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, weathered photograph. It showed a younger version of himself, standing next to a smiling woman who looked strikingly familiar. “That’s my sister,” he said, his voice breaking slightly. “Her name was Lira. The Dominion used her to keep me in line. When I tried to break free, they… they killed her.” Noxana’s chest tightened. The pain in his eyes was raw and unguarded, and for the first time, she saw past the enigmatic exterior to the man beneath. “I couldn’t save her,” Erydan continued. “But I can protect you. If you’ll let me.” --- Later that night, as the city lights cast long shadows across her apartment, Noxana found herself pacing. Erydan had fallen silent, his back to the wall as he watched her with a mix of patience and tension. “Do you have a plan?” she asked finally. “Stay ahead of them,” he said. “Keep moving. Find a way to expose their operations before they bury us.” “And you think I’m just going to drop everything and go on the run with you?” “It’s either that or let Seraphine use you as leverage. Do you trust her more than me?” Noxana hesitated. As much as she hated the position she was in, something about Seraphine had felt… wrong. And despite her doubts, Erydan’s actions—his presence—seemed genuine. Before she could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the apartment. Erydan was on his feet in an instant, his hand moving to the concealed holster beneath his jacket. He motioned for her to stay quiet, his eyes scanning the room for potential exits. “Miss Sorrel,” a muffled voice called from the other side of the door. “This is Seraphine Vaughn. We need to talk.” Noxana’s blood ran cold. Erydan leaned close, his breath warm against her ear. “Do you trust me?” She nodded, her heart pounding. “Then follow my lead.” He pulled her toward the fire escape, his movements swift and silent. As they climbed out into the night, Noxana realized her life would never be the same. But part of her—buried beneath the fear and uncertainty—felt alive. — END OF CHAPTER 2 —
