CHAPTER SIXTEEN --- The Dominion headquarters lay in ruins, but there was no time to celebrate. The team's victory was bittersweet, marked by sacrifice and the knowledge that their mission wasn’t over. They had struck a critical blow, but the Dominion still held power, and Project Obsidian’s backup AI systems could reactivate unless destroyed completely. --- Gathering Strength In the aftermath of the explosion, Noxana, Erydan, and Kael regrouped at a resistance hideout. The tension in the room was palpable as the weight of Lira’s sacrifice hung heavy in the air. Kael sat at the table, clutching his wounded shoulder. “We’ve taken out their servers, but it’s not enough. Dominion systems are designed with redundancies. There’s still one final core location—the heart of Project Obsidian.” Erydan, pacing the room, asked, “Where is it?” Kael pointed to a holographic map projected on the wall. “Here. An underground facility beneath the Dominion’s capital stronghold. It’s where they house the AI that runs Project Obsidian.” Noxana frowned. “How heavily guarded?” Kael’s face hardened. “Heavily. We’ll be going straight into the lion’s den. If we don’t disable the core, everything we’ve done will be for nothing.” “Then we finish this,” Noxana said, her voice resolute. “Whatever it takes.” --- The Final Plan Rhys had left behind critical data about the facility, and the team poured over the information, piecing together a plan. The core AI was located deep underground, protected by layers of security and Dominion operatives. To reach it, they would need to bypass biometric scanners, automated defenses, and heavily armed guards. Erydan reviewed the maps, his brow furrowed. “This is suicide.” “It’s the only way,” Noxana replied. “If we don’t stop the AI, the Dominion will rise again.” Kael nodded. “We’ll create a diversion on the surface to draw their forces away. Noxana, Erydan, and I will infiltrate the core.” Noxana glanced at Erydan. “Are you in?” He met her gaze, determination in his eyes. “Always.” --- Into the Depths The team infiltrated the Dominion’s capital under the cover of darkness. Resistance fighters launched attacks across the city, pulling Dominion forces away from the stronghold. Noxana, Erydan, and Kael slipped through the chaos, making their way to the facility’s hidden entrance. Inside, the air was cold and sterile, the walls lined with sleek technology. The hum of machinery echoed through the halls as they navigated the labyrinth of corridors. Kael led the way, his knowledge of Dominion systems proving invaluable. “The AI core is three levels down. We’ll need to move fast.” As they descended deeper, the resistance fighters’ diversion began to falter. Dominion reinforcements flooded the city, and the team’s window of opportunity narrowed. --- **Reaching the Core** The AI core was housed in a massive, circular chamber, its walls glowing with data streams. In the center of the room stood the AI’s central processor, a towering structure pulsating with energy. “This is it,” Kael said. “Once we destroy this, Project Obsidian is finished.” Erydan approached the console, his weapon at the ready. “How do we take it out?” Kael pulled out a device Rhys had designed, a compact but powerful EMP. “This should do the trick. It’ll overload the AI’s systems and shut it down permanently. But someone needs to stay behind to trigger it manually.” Noxana’s heart sank. “No. There has to be another way.” “There isn’t,” Kael said firmly. “This is the only way to ensure the AI is destroyed.” --- A Fierce Battle Before they could act, Dominion operatives stormed the chamber. The team fought fiercely, the air filled with the sound of gunfire and the clash of metal. Noxana moved like a shadow, her blade cutting through the enemy ranks with precision. Erydan covered her, his aim unerring as he took down approaching guards. Kael worked to set up the EMP, his movements frantic. “Keep them off me! I need more time!” Despite their efforts, the Dominion forces were relentless. Erydan was wounded, a bullet grazing his side, but he kept fighting, refusing to back down. --- A Personal Sacrifice With the EMP ready, Kael turned to Noxana and Erydan. “Go. I’ll trigger it.” “No!” Noxana shouted. “We can find another way!” Kael shook his head. “This is the only way. You two need to live to see this through.” Erydan hesitated, his jaw clenched. “Kael—” “Go!” Kael barked, his voice leaving no room for argument. Reluctantly, Noxana and Erydan retreated, fighting their way back through the corridors as the Dominion forces closed in. Behind them, Kael activated the EMP, a blinding surge of energy consuming the chamber. The explosion rocked the facility, sending shockwaves through the structure. Noxana and Erydan barely made it to the surface before the ground collapsed beneath them. --- Victory and Loss As the dust settled, Noxana and Erydan stood on the edge of the ruins, their breaths heavy. The Dominion’s final stronghold had fallen, but the cost was steep. They had lost too many along the way—Rhys, Lira, Kael. Each loss weighed on Noxana’s heart. Erydan placed a hand on her shoulder. “We did it. The Dominion is finished.” She nodded, though her expression was somber. “They’re gone, but their scars remain. We have a lot of work to do.” — END OF CHAPTER 16 —
