People often say that silence is golden, but in this office, silence was dangerous it meant someone was planning, hiding, or unraveling.
And today, I was deconstructing.
The glass walls encasing my corner office mirrored all I sought to hide. My reflection gazed back at me as a woman who appeared serene, sophisticated, and resolute. The Assistant Executive to Mr. Davis. The calm intellect driving a hundred active components. Yet internally, I was far from calm.
I saw Leena stroll by my office. She failed to notice me.
However, I observed her.
Her steps were uncertain, her shoulders weighed down. As she rounded the corner toward Zack’s office, I stayed focused and didn’t divert my gaze.
I didn’t feel envy.
At the very least, that’s what I convinced myself.
