Chapter 17
It had been three weeks since Adrian’s return three weeks since Shaira finally stopped running from what her heart already knew.
Every day, they worked side by side on the eco resort.
Adrian was different now. He listened more than he spoke, laughed more easily, and no longer carried the heavy pride that once shielded him.
Shaira found herself smiling again the kind of smile that reached her eyes.
Sometimes, when the breeze swept through the palm trees, she wondered if fate had simply brought them back to where they were always meant to be.
One afternoon, they were in the middle of testing the solar panels when Adrian’s phone buzzed.
He frowned when he saw the caller ID: Lucia Tan Steele Corporation Executive Board.
He turned away from Shaira as he answered, his tone instantly sharp.
“Lucia. What is it?”
Her voice came through the speaker, cold and clipped.
“You’ve been ignoring our calls for weeks, Adrian. The board is demanding answers. Are you really abandoning Steele Industries to play island manager?”
He clenched his jaw. “I didn’t abandon anything. I’m restructuring. Building something real.”
“Something real? You walked away from a billion dollar company and half our investors think you’ve lost your mind! The press is calling this a meltdown. Do you know how bad this looks?”
Adrian looked out toward the sea. “I don’t care how it looks. I care that it means something.”
“Then you’d better care soon,” Lucia warned. “Because someone else is taking control. Your brother.”
Adrian froze. “Ethan?”
“He’s filing for full control of Steele Industries. You walk away, and the empire your father built it’s his.”
The line went dead.
That night, Adrian stood alone on the beach, staring at the horizon. The waves rolled in quietly, but his thoughts were loud tangled, bitter, and afraid.
He had left that world behind. He didn’t miss the boardrooms or the luxury cars.
But hearing his brother’s name it pulled open a wound that never truly healed.
Ethan had always been the perfect son. Calm, polished, obedient. The golden child their father adored. Adrian was the rebel, the disappointment the one who felt too much and obeyed too little.
And now, Ethan was taking everything.
He didn’t notice Shaira approach until her hand touched his arm.
“Adrian,” she said softly, “you’ve been quiet since the call.”
He sighed. “It’s nothing you need to worry about.”
You’re lying, she said gently. “I can see it in your eyes.”
He smiled faintly. “You always could.”
After a pause, he told her everything bout Lucia, the board, Ethan’s move for control.
When he finished, she was silent for a while.
Then she said, “So what will you do?”
“I don’t know.” He looked out to sea. “Part of me wants to fight back. The other part doesn’t want to go near that life ever again.”
Shaira looked down, her voice calm. “Maybe this isn’t about choosing between the island and the city. Maybe it’s about proving that you can belong to both that you’re strong enough to build something better.”
He met her gaze. “And if I lose?”
She smiled faintly. “Then at least you’ll know you fought for what was right.”
Days passed. The resort neared completion bamboo villas glowing under the sun, coral pathways lined with native flowers.
Adrian poured his energy into it, but at night, his thoughts drifted to his brother and the empire he’d left behind.
Then one afternoon, a sleek speedboat arrived at the dock. Out stepped Ethan Steele immaculate in a gray suit, his expression unreadable.
Shaira was by the café when she saw him. “Who’s that?” she asked one of the workers.
“Some big shot from the city,” the man whispered. “Came looking for Mr. Steele.”
Her stomach tightened.
Moments later, Adrian walked down the pier to meet him.
“Didn’t expect you here, Ethan,” Adrian said flatly.
Ethan adjusted his sunglasses. “You left without saying goodbye. I thought I’d see for myself what’s become of my brother the one who traded skyscrapers for sand.”
Adrian smirked. “And yet you came all this way. Curious, isn’t it?”
Ethan ignored the jab. “The board is done waiting. Either you return to the city and resume your duties, or I’ll assume full control. You’ve had your fun here.”
Adrian’s eyes darkened. “This isn’t fun. It’s purpose. Something Dad never understood and clearly, neither do you.”
Ethan stepped closer. “Purpose doesn’t pay dividends. Legacy does.”
Shaira, who had quietly approached, couldn’t hold back anymore.
“Maybe legacy isn’t about money,” she said, her voice calm but firm. “Maybe it’s about doing something good for once.”
Ethan’s gaze flicked to her, cold and assessing. “And you must be the reason my brother’s gone soft.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Watch your words.”
Ethan smirked. “Touchy. But fine enjoy your little paradise, brother. Just remember the ocean is beautiful, but it doesn’t last. One storm, and everything you built will wash away.”
He turned and walked back to his boat, leaving silence in his wake.
That night, the island winds grew stronger, carrying the scent of rain.
Adrian sat in the half built resort lobby, staring at the blueprints under candlelight.
Shaira entered quietly, a towel over her shoulders. “You shouldn’t let him get to you.”
Adrian looked up. “He’s right about one thing. Storms come, and they destroy everything.”
Then we rebuild,” she said simply. “We always do.”
Her calm strength made something in him soften.
He took her hand. “When I first came here, I thought the island was just escape. But now I see it’s home. You’re home.”
Shaira’s breath caught. “Adrian…”
“I’m not going back,” he said firmly. “If my brother wants the empire, he can have it. I’ll build something new something that doesn’t break people.”
Tears shimmered in her eyes. “Then you’ve already won.”
Outside, the first drops of rain began to fall gentle, cleansing, full of promise.
Adrian smiled. “Seems the storm’s back.”
Shaira laughed softly. “Good. Maybe it’ll remind us where it all began.”
They stood together at the open doorway, watching lightning dance over the sea.
Two hearts that had once belonged to opposite worlds now standing side by side, stronger than before.
Back to where it all began.
