Chapter 4: Alec

824 Words
Not even a second after the door closes behind Addie, blondie comes right up to me. "What's your name?" She asks. I consider giving her a false one but she might've heard Addie saying my name. "Alec and you are?" I ask pretending to actually care what the hell her name is.     "Madison." She pauses for a second. "Was that your girlfriend?" She asks 100% interested and I doubt it's because she wants to be friends with her. Otherwise, she would've asked Addie herself. "Nope." I say popping the "P" a little too much. I barely stop myself from adding "I wish she was." Because really? Addie hasn't given me a single sign that she's interested in me. Not one. "Do you have one?" She asks. "Have one of what?" I ask confused.     "A girlfriend, silly." She smacks my shoulder playfully and giggles. No, I'm not kidding, she giggled. I've always hated that sound. Only when Addie makes it does it sound nice. When Addie giggles it doesn't sound preppy or fake, it just sounds like... Well, Addie. "No, I don't" I say dreading what she's going to ask next.     "Do you want one?" She asks leaning towards me so close that I can smell the onions. Or whatever the hell that is. "A girlfriend, I mean." She says her breathe smelling as bad as she does.     I lean away as far as I can away from her. At this point I don't really care about being rude.     Just then I see Addie come bustling through. God, she's beautiful. A few hairs from her bun came loose falling over her eyes and if I'm not mistaken she's pissed. I can't tell if it's at me or at Madison.     Speaking of Madison her eyes follow where I'm looking and see's Addison there. She straightens up but doesn't realize her firm grip on my shoulder. I try to move my shoulder but she won't budge. Will she get the hell off of me? Addie keeps her eyes averted from mine but zeroes in on Madison.      "Wasn't that your boyfriend I just saw?" She asks, all business. Madison flicks her gaze over to me. She looks sly, like she was expecting this question and has the answer all ready to go. "No, that would be my stepbrother." She says innocently. "Mhmm. I think it's pretty weird flirting with your stepbrother, don't you think?" She says taking all the slyness away from Madison in a split second. Damn, she's awesome. Madison gives me a panicky look and I shrug my shoulders. "I-I wasn't flir-flirting with hi-him." She stutters all feigned innocence gone completely. Once she realizes she's caught dead she says "I don't have to deal with this" and practically runs away hitting her face on the door on her way out.     I grin at Addie. "That was mean but awesome at the same time." I get up and am about to leave but Addie says "Throw away your cup, keep the spoon." She pauses for a second, sighs and says "She was flirting with you, I didn't like- it wasn't cool."  She says suddenly looking stressed. I hate to say it but I need to see her reaction. "You were jealous." I say careful to study the emotions running across her face. Confusion, Jealousy, and anger (Hopefully it's not directed towards me) She gives me an irritated look and says "I don't know, Okay? God-Dammit." She says the last part under her breath but I still hear it. "What do you want to do?" I ask softly wondering, hoping that this is my chance. "I don't know" She whispers.     I walk up to her and wrap her in my embrace. I play with her hair curling and uncurling it around my index finger. "I've told you before and I'll tell you again. I've loved you since the third grade and you don't need to say it back. That's not why I'm telling you this." I take a deep breath and say "I'm telling you this because you need to know. You know, just in case you change your mind.      I pull back and look at her face, she's trying not to cry, so I tilt her face up and kiss her softly. It takes her a second to kiss back but when she does, I could've sworn it was electricity. It didn't last long before I broke the kiss saying "The next time that happens, you have to be the one that starts it." She's breathless, her eyes wild.      I turn away before she tries to kiss me again. I need her to think about it, not when she's thinking irrationally, fueled on jealousy. I say "Thank you" to the girl at the cash register and head out to the car. It only takes a few second for Addie to catch up with me. She's got her eyebrows knitted together and is silent getting out the keys, starting the car and driving back to her apartment.
