Prologue

It was never easy for people like me. Never easy at school, at home, or at work. At school, I was bullied because I was poor. No matter if I had decent clothes and lunch every day. The only thing that mattered to the bullies was that my father worked two low-income jobs, and sometimes I would help him. They found this irresistible to not make fun of. It was hard for me, even though I knew there was nothing to be ashamed of. My father would scold me because I wasn't getting good grades at school. He asked for my help with his work every single day but never helped me with my homework when I needed him. Around sixteen years old, I got a mini-job at the supermarket near home. I went there three days a week after school. I was more focused on my homework than before, and I started getting good grades, but it still didn't matter to my father. He was angry that I couldn't help him anymore, but he made peace with it after I ignored him for a whole week. I finished school with good grades, I made a few good friends, but I had no best friend. At least not until I started college. Terra and I became the best of friends two weeks after I went to college and have been the best friends ever since. Two years after I graduated, my father had a heart attack. This meant that I had to go back home for the funeral. My last boss fired me because I took too much time off, and since I wasn't making decent money at the time, I decided not to hire a lawyer. Terra told me I could stay at her place until I found a job, and that helped me a lot. I kept looking for a job until I came across a very interesting job opportunity. The Nolan Parker, Real Estate Developer and part-time Hockey player, in Washington D.C. was looking for an assistant. I couldn't believe my eyes, but I gave it a chance. My degree is in finance and economics, but I was still hoping he would take me. I went there two days ago and today I received an e-mail from him. It looks like I got the job! Wish me luck!
