Aurora’s Pov
I heard loud footsteps approaching my office. My door opened without knocking.
Alaric.
“How dare you come in without knocking?” I snapped. “What part of ‘I'm your boss’ do you not understand?”
“There’s something we need to discuss. Privately.”
“There is nothing to talk about.”
There was silence in the room. He looked at me like he was seeing me for the first time.
“What is it?” I asked, breaking the silence.
He took a step closer. “You…you really look good I must say.”
“I don't have time for greetings,” I snapped. “Why are you in my office?”
“You've made progress on the cure?”
“I have.”
“You are running trials soon?”
“Of course, and?”
“I want to be the first test subject.”
“No. The trials are for people with—oh,” it dawned on me.
“I have been diagnosed recently—and I'd like to volunteer my body.”
I looked at him. At the Alpha King. The man who saw me as nothing but a transaction. He planned to discard me as soon as I gave him what he wanted. Now he's at my mercy, with his life in my hands. And I'd use his body as he used mine.
“Pathetic,” I whispered under my breath.
“You understand the risks?” I asked.
“Yes,” he nodded.
“If the drug fails, your system will begin to decline and there's no reversing. You'll die.”
“I understand, Aurora—Ms Stone,” he corrected himself. “It is a risk I am willing to take.”
“Good. Then I need your blood. Testing will begin soon.”
He turned to walk away, but then he stopped mid-air. “One last thing, I met him earlier.”
“ Who?”
“The little boy…he felt familiar.” My jaw tightened. I immediately thought of Kai. He must have bumped into him in the hallway.
“Now you listen to me, there is no boy, and let business be business. Get out!”
So selfish of him. He dared open his mouth to claim my son? I'll keep him far away from him.
I poured myself a glass of whiskey, and memories flooded my head as the whiskey burned my chest.
Five years ago, I ran away with nothing but the clothes I was wearing and a few dollars I had saved up that could barely cover anything.
I was hopeless until I found out I was pregnant. My little boy gave me a reason to live and fight. Kai was born in a private clinic under a false name.
The first few months were survival. Good thing I knew science and formulas. My father might have sold his soul to create something that kills but I used what I learned from his lab to save. Thanks to Lyra, my best friend, I was able to make this a reality.
Creating a cure for this virus that can kill a werewolf after what they put me through wasn't out of the goodness of my heart, but for my son. I wanted to create a world safe for him to live in.
I already had enough in the office so I signalled my driver to take me home. I watched as people whispered, “Isn't that the werewolf bride? How did she become a boss overnight?”
I was no longer the poor sacrificial lamb— I held the fate of their world in my hands.
“Mummy,” Kai shouted immediately as I opened the door.
“Oh my baby, I missed you so much,” I said, kissing his forehead.
“Mummy, I met a man in your new office today and I kicked him for trying to talk about you.”
My chest tightened. It must be Alaric. “Listen to me,” I held him gently. His eyes were silver-grey just like his father's.
“Next time you see that man, do not talk to him and do not mention me, okay?” He nodded. “Remember, Mummy is working on a project, and some bad men would want to interfere. So listen to Mummy.”
“Okay, Mummy.” I gave him a warm hug before calling Anna to prepare him for bed.
While I lay on my bed to sleep, Alaric’s face flashed in my head. The way he looked helpless and hopeful when he asked about his son. For a moment I wanted to give up this fight, but then I remembered the pain I had been through to get here.
He must not know about Kai. Not until I am sure that the prototype works with no side effects.
I woke up and prepared for work. My assistants had already set my schedule for me. And the most important thing is the testing of our subject.
“Is there any other willing subject?” I asked her while I went through some files.
“No.”
Damn it! Now I have to deal with him again today.
“Before I forget, you have to pick Kai from school by 3:00.”
“Yes, ma'am.”
“And don't let him run around.”
“I won't,” she replied with a smile.
A message popped up on my phone, it was from Lyra. “People are calling you the saviour.”
Me: Come on, I wouldn't do this without you.
Lyra: Remember your hot date tonight.
I tucked my phone in my pocket with a smile, the feeling of relief hitting me. At least I’m not alone.
Lyra had always been trying to set me up with dates but I kept declining. She's worried Alaric might have turned me into a cold-hearted woman with no love life.
I needed air, so I opened the door to leave, I froze. My stepfather stood right in front…waiting. He wasn't tense. That was the terrifying part.
For a moment, I almost faltered, but then I remembered I had built something that would make me fearless.
“The rumours are true,” he said, glancing at me with curiosity and admiration.
“They are, Father. And I'm back to make everyone pay,” I replied, walking away almost immediately.
“There'll be consequences if you don't call off the cure for the virus,” he said, almost gently. As if he were doing me a favour.
I smiled faintly, “This time I won't run.”
