CHAPTER ELEVEN: WHAT HE WANTED HER TO SEE

1153 Words
Sarah didn’t sleep. The dark vehicle remained in her thoughts long after she drove into the garage. She had checked the street twice before entering her apartment. The vehicle was gone. Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone had been watching her. Someone had been watching her for a while. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at Daniel’s last message. You’ll find out tomorrow. What exactly did he want to show her? And why had he told her not to come to work early? Sarah hated the fact that she was curious. She hated even more that she was looking forward to seeing him. Her phone vibrated. Michael. She watched his name flash across the screen. She didn’t answer. It stopped. Then came a message. Michael: We need to talk. Sarah stared at it. She typed: About Daniel? Three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Nothing. Sarah placed the phone face down. For once, she didn’t want Michael’s explanation. She wanted Daniel’s. That realization frightened her. ⸻ The next morning, Sarah arrived at the office later than usual. Daniel was waiting. He stood beside the entrance, dressed in a dark suit, his expression unreadable. “You came.” Sarah stopped. “You told me not to come early.” “I didn’t think you’d listen.” “Then why say it?” A faint smile. “To see if you would.” Sarah rolled her eyes. “You’re impossible.” Daniel stepped closer. “Are you afraid?” “No.” “Good.” He held out his hand. “Come with me.” Sarah stared at it. “Where?” “You’ll see.” She didn’t take his hand. Instead, she walked beside him. They entered a private elevator. Sarah folded her arms. “Daniel, what exactly are you doing?” “You’ll know soon.” The elevator descended. Sarah frowned. “Your office is upstairs.” “I know.” The doors opened into an underground parking area. Daniel led her toward his car. Sarah stopped. “I thought you were showing me something.” “I am.” “Where?” “Somewhere private.” She hesitated. Daniel looked at her. “You can leave.” Sarah stared at him. “You always do that.” “Do what?” “Give me the option to leave.” “Because I want you to choose to stay.” Something about those words settled heavily inside her. Sarah opened the passenger door. “I’ll come.” Daniel smiled. “Good.” ⸻ They drove for almost thirty minutes. Sarah watched the city disappear behind them. Finally, Daniel turned onto a quiet road lined with trees. “What is this place?” “My old house.” Sarah looked at him. “You lived here?” “Once.” The house appeared at the end of the road. It was large but neglected, surrounded by overgrown grass and old trees. Sarah stepped out. “This doesn’t look like somewhere you live.” “I don’t.” “Then why bring me here?” Daniel looked toward the house. “Because some memories need to be faced.” Sarah followed him inside. Dust covered the furniture. The walls were bare. The air smelled faintly of old wood and rain. Daniel walked toward a staircase. Sarah followed. He stopped outside a room. Then opened the door. Sarah froze. The room was almost completely empty. Except for a desk. A bookshelf. And several boxes. “What happened here?” Daniel didn’t answer. He walked to the desk and opened a drawer. He pulled out another photograph. Sarah recognized Michael immediately. But this photograph was different. Michael looked angry. Daniel stood beside him. And the third young man from the photograph in Michael’s study stood behind them. Sarah pointed. “Who is he?” Daniel looked at the photograph. “His name was Adrian.” “Was?” Daniel nodded. “He’s dead.” Sarah’s stomach tightened. “How?” Daniel’s expression changed. “That’s where our story begins.” Sarah stared at him. “Our?” “The story between me and Michael.” She looked at the photograph. “What happened to Adrian?” Daniel looked at her. “Michael never told you?” “No.” “He wouldn’t.” “Why?” “Because if you knew what happened to Adrian, you’d understand why I came back.” Sarah’s heartbeat quickened. “What did Michael do?” Daniel stepped closer. “You’re asking the wrong question.” “Then what’s the right one?” “What did Michael allow to happen?” Sarah stared at him. Daniel placed the photograph into her hands. “Keep it.” She looked down. “Why?” “Because you’re going to need it.” “For what?” Daniel didn’t answer. Instead, he walked toward the window. Sarah watched him. “You planned this.” He turned. “What?” “Everything.” His expression remained calm. “The hotel. The law firm. Me finding these photographs.” Daniel said nothing. Sarah’s voice hardened. “You knew exactly who I was before we met.” Silence. That was all the answer she needed. Her chest tightened. “How long?” Daniel looked at her. “Long enough.” “Why?” His eyes darkened. “Because I needed to know who you were.” “Why?” “Because of Michael.” Sarah shook her head. “You used me.” Daniel didn’t deny it. “At first.” The words struck harder than she expected. “At first?” He stepped closer. “Then you became something I hadn’t planned for.” Sarah stared at him. “What?” Daniel’s voice lowered. “You.” The room fell silent. Sarah wanted to be angry. She was angry. But underneath that anger was something far more dangerous. She believed him. That was the problem. Daniel had started with a plan. But somewhere along the way, something had changed. And Sarah didn’t know whether that made him more dangerous… or whether it made her more vulnerable to him. Daniel reached for the photograph in her hand. Their fingers touched. He didn’t pull away. Neither did she. Then he whispered: “There’s one thing I haven’t shown you.” Sarah looked up. “What?” Daniel’s expression became unreadable. “The reason Michael and I stopped being brothers.” Sarah’s heart pounded. “Tell me.” “Not yet.” “Why?” “Because when you learn the truth…” He paused. “You won’t look at your husband the same way again.” Daniel walked away. Sarah remained standing in the abandoned room, clutching the photograph. She had come looking for answers. Instead, she’d found another question. And somewhere deep inside, she knew— the truth about Michael was going to change everything.
