CHAPTER THREE: ONE NIGHT

1137 Words
Sarah didn’t sleep. Not properly. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw him. Daniel. His quiet confidence. The way he watched her without pretending he wasn’t. The way he’d asked questions nobody had bothered to ask in years. And worst of all— The way he had looked at her when she walked away. She lay beneath the covers, staring at the ceiling of the hotel room she’d booked at the last minute. She had told herself she needed somewhere to sleep because she was too angry to go home. That was the sensible explanation. The real one was harder to admit. She wasn’t ready to go back to Michael. Not tonight. Her phone vibrated. Michael. Sarah stared at the screen. She didn’t answer. A second call came. Then a message. Michael: Where are you? She locked the phone. For once, she didn’t want to explain herself. She got out of bed and walked toward the window. The city stretched beneath her, glittering and restless. She should go home. She knew that. Instead, her mind returned to the hotel bar. To Daniel. Sarah closed her eyes. “This is ridiculous.” A knock sounded at her door. Her eyes opened. She froze. Another knock. Sarah’s heart began pounding. She moved toward the door slowly and looked through the peephole. Daniel. Her breath caught. She opened the door halfway. “What are you doing here?” Daniel looked at her calmly. “I could ask you the same thing.” “This is my room.” “I know.” The answer sent a chill down her spine. Sarah stared at him. “How did you know?” Daniel’s expression didn’t change. “You told me.” “I didn’t.” A pause. Then the smallest smile appeared on his lips. “You’re right.” Sarah should have closed the door. Instead, she remained there. “What do you want?” “To see if you were okay.” “I don’t need you to check on me.” “I know.” “Then why are you here?” Daniel stepped slightly closer. “Because you looked like you needed someone.” Sarah swallowed. “You don’t know me.” “I know enough.” “That doesn’t make sense.” “Maybe it doesn’t have to.” She hated that answer. She hated how much she liked hearing it. Daniel glanced past her. “Can I come in?” “No.” He nodded. “Okay.” He didn’t argue. Didn’t push. Didn’t try to force his way inside. He simply stood there. And somehow, that made Sarah want to open the door even more. She finally stepped aside. “Five minutes.” Daniel walked in. Sarah closed the door. Silence settled between them. Daniel looked around. “You got a room.” “I didn’t want to go home.” “Why?” “Because I was angry.” “With Michael?” Sarah looked at him sharply. “Yes.” Daniel nodded. He seemed almost unsurprised. Sarah folded her arms. “You ask too many questions.” “And you answer them.” She looked away. Daniel smiled. “Sarah.” “What?” “Look at me.” She did. And something changed. The air suddenly felt heavier. Daniel was close. Much closer than before. Sarah could smell his cologne. Warm. Clean. Subtle. Her pulse accelerated. “You should leave,” she whispered. Daniel didn’t move. “Do you want me to?” “Yes.” The word came out too quickly. Daniel studied her face. “Then tell me to leave again.” Sarah opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Daniel took one slow step toward her. Sarah didn’t move. Another. Now there was barely any space between them. “You’re married,” he said quietly. “I know.” “You love your husband.” Sarah’s eyes dropped. “I do.” “Then why are you still standing here?” She didn’t have an answer. Daniel lifted his hand. He didn’t touch her. He stopped just beside her cheek. Giving her every opportunity to move away. Sarah closed her eyes. That was her mistake. Because the moment she did, she felt his fingers brush lightly against her cheek. Her breath caught. Daniel waited. Sarah opened her eyes. His gaze was fixed on hers. “Tell me to stop.” Her lips parted. She should have. Instead, she whispered: “Don’t.” Daniel kissed her. It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t desperate. It was slow. Deliberate. As though he had all the time in the world. Sarah’s hands found his shirt before she realized what she was doing. The guilt came instantly. Michael. Her husband. Her marriage. Every reason she should stop. But Daniel pulled away just enough to look at her. “You can still walk away.” Sarah stared at him. Then she kissed him again. This time, she chose it. The rest of the night blurred into something Sarah knew she would regret. But regret didn’t arrive immediately. For a few hours, she allowed herself to forget everything. The loneliness. The arguments. The expectations. She wasn’t somebody’s wife. She wasn’t a lawyer. She wasn’t trying to hold a broken marriage together. She was simply Sarah. And Daniel made her feel wanted. Seen. Desired. When morning finally came, Sarah woke with her heart pounding. For several seconds, she didn’t remember where she was. Then she saw Daniel sleeping beside her. Reality crashed back. She sat up. Her stomach twisted. “What did I do?” She dressed quickly. Quietly. She reached for her handbag. Before leaving, she looked at him one last time. Daniel opened his eyes. He wasn’t surprised to see her standing there. “You’re leaving.” It wasn’t a question. Sarah nodded. “This can’t happen again.” Daniel watched her. “Okay.” She frowned. “Okay?” “Yes.” She waited for him to argue. He didn’t. That somehow made leaving harder. Sarah walked toward the door. Her hand touched the handle. “Sarah.” She stopped. She looked back. Daniel’s expression was unreadable. “Next time,” he said quietly, “don’t run.” Sarah’s heart skipped. “There won’t be a next time.” Daniel smiled. Not sadly. Not angrily. Almost knowingly. “We’ll see.” Sarah left. The door closed behind her. She walked down the hallway with shaking hands. She had cheated on her husband. She had crossed a line she never thought she would cross. And she promised herself that whatever had happened between her and Daniel would stay exactly where it belonged. One night. One mistake. Nothing more. She didn’t know it yet. But Daniel had already decided otherwise. One night was never going to be enough.
