The warehouse door rattled violently, the sound of banging and shouting echoing through the dusty space. For a moment, both Kate and Monica froze, attention diverted from their tense standoff. Was it a rescue? Had someone discovered their secret meeting? But the commotion died down as abruptly as it began. Silence, thick and heavy, settled once more. It was a cruel tease of hope dashed quickly. Monica, her earlier fury momentarily abated, gave a humorless scoff. "Just a distraction," she drawled, her gaze snapping back to Kate.
