Scarlet purred behind the cabin door, and Ginny spoke to her through the wood.
“Just another moment, darling.”
“Poor thing,” Hendrik spoke as he knelt on the floor to comfort the cat through the door. His sympathy for the animal surprised Ginny in a good way.
Ginny opened the door. Scarlet ran to her, and Ginny collected the cat in her arms. Hendrik insisted on checking inside her room before she entered.
“I’m sure I’m not in any danger, really,” Ginny said. “Scarlet wouldn’t have been so calm if that were the case.”
“I’d still like to check just to be sure. With us walking around with the detective before, there’s a chance the murderer might have seen you, and who knows what they’re thinking. They could imagine you are a witness and saw them.”
