First Collision

The break bell rang through the halls of Brookhill High, and students flooded out of classrooms, their voices bouncing off the walls with chatter and laughter. Ariella stepped out of her new class with a small sigh, clutching her notebook to her chest. She had made it through her first class. Barely. Being the new girl wasn’t easy, and although most of the students had been friendly, she still felt like an outsider, except for one person. That boy. The one at the back of the class who didn’t clap or smile when she was introduced. He hadn’t even looked directly at her, yet somehow, she felt his presence more than anyone else’s. Ariella followed the stream of students down the hall, unsure where the cafeteria was but trying to blend in. She rounded a corner and bam collided straight into someone, her books falling to the floor. “I’m so sorry!” she gasped, bending to pick them up. A hand reached down at the same time, and their fingers brushed. She looked up. It was him. The boy from class. Up close now. His eyes were even sharper than she remembered, steel grey with a flicker of something softer hidden deep. “You should watch where you’re going,” he said flatly, handing her a book. “I said I was sorry,” Ariella muttered, slightly annoyed by his tone. A flicker of a smirk tugged at his lips. “You’re new. I remember.” Ariella dusted off her notebook and stood. “Yeah. First day. Clearly going great.” He raised an eyebrow. “I’m Zayn.” She hesitated. “Ariella.” Their eyes lingered for a moment longer than necessary. It wasn’t warm, but it wasn’t cold either. It felt… charged. Without another word, Zayn nodded and walked away, hands in his pockets, disappearing into the crowd of students. Ariella stood frozen for a moment. Zayn. That name echoed in her head like a song she used to know. But she couldn’t place it yet. Not yet. After the strange but short encounter with Zayn, Ariella shook off the lingering tension and followed the crowd toward the cafeteria. The smell of warm food and the buzz of teenage energy filled the large hall. She quietly joined the lunch line, scanning the tables filled with students clustered in groups, laughing, gossiping, sharing inside jokes. She sighed. This was the part she dreaded. The part where everyone already knew everyone, and she was just… new. Grabbing a tray of spaghetti and juice, she found an empty table in the far corner and sat down, quietly eating. Her mind wandered back to Zayn, the steel-grey eyes, the sharp voice, the way he said her name. There was something about him she couldn’t shake. After lunch, the bell rang, signaling the end of break. Ariella packed up and made her way back to class. This time, she noticed a girl already seated beside her spot, a dark-skinned girl with braids, glasses, and a warm smile. She turned as Ariella approached. “Hey! You’re the new girl, right?” she asked cheerfully. “Yeah,” Ariella nodded, slipping into her seat. “Ariella.” “I’m Esther. You’re sitting next to the coolest person in class,” she said with a playful grin. Ariella chuckled. “Glad to hear that.” Esther leaned closer. “So… how’s your first day going?” “It’s been… interesting,” Ariella said, thinking of Zayn. “Still trying to find my feet.” “Well, you found the right seat. I know everything and everyone,” Esther winked. “If you need the real tea, I got you.” Ariella laughed, her tension slowly melting. For the first time that day, she felt a little less like an outsider. Maybe this new school wouldn’t be so bad after all. The soft hum of the projector and the steady voice of the teacher filled the classroom. Ariella sat upright, taking notes diligently as the hours ticked by. Math. History. English. The day blurred into a steady rhythm of lectures and flipping pages. Esther passed her a stick of gum during one of the breaks, and they whispered a few jokes that made Ariella smile. The final bell rang at 4 PM, and students rushed out of class with sighs of relief and the loud chatter of teenage freedom. Esther waved goodbye, “See you tomorrow, Ari!” before disappearing into the crowd. But Ariella stayed behind. She had been asked to complete some leftover registration process, documents her dad hadn’t submitted yet and a few forms to fill out for her school records. She made her way to the admin building, watching as the school slowly emptied. The once-busy hallways were quieter now, and a cool breeze blew in through the open windows. Ariella hugged her arms around herself, feeling the weight of the day settle in. At the front desk, a kind woman handed her a clipboard. “Just sign here and fill this out, sweetheart. Won’t take long.” Ariella nodded, sat down, and got to work. Though she was tired, a quiet sense of pride settled over her. New school. New people. New stories. And maybe, just maybe… a new version of herself. After completing the final form, Ariella thanked the staff and stepped out of the administrative office. The school grounds were quiet eerily so. The once-bustling corridors were now empty, with only the sound of her footsteps echoing softly against the tiled floors. She glanced at the time: 4:45 PM. Her dad had texted earlier, letting her know he was running a bit late due to traffic. With a sigh, Ariella decided to wait it out in her classroom. Pushing the door open, she stepped into the dimly lit space. The sunlight from the high windows cast soft gold patterns across the desks. It felt strange being there alone. Her eyes wandered across the room, and then they stopped. Zayn. He was still there. Sitting in the same seat at the back, slouched a little, arms crossed over his chest. His head was tilted slightly, as if deep in thought. He hadn’t noticed her yet. Ariella’s breath caught in her throat. She froze. What was he still doing here? She was sure everyone had gone home. Part of her wanted to slip back out the door quietly, unnoticed. But her shoes scraped against the floor, and his eyes lifted, meeting hers. Those same eyes she had seen hours earlier. Sharp. Intense. Unreadable. For a moment, silence stretched between them. Zayn raised an eyebrow slightly, almost amused. “You’re still here?” “I could ask you the same,” Ariella replied, her voice steady though her heart pounded. He gave a small shrug. “Just… didn’t feel like rushing home.” She nodded slowly, stepping further into the room. “Me neither. Waiting for my dad.” Zayn didn’t respond right away. His gaze lingered on her, thoughtful, like he was trying to figure something out. “You’re not like the others,” he said finally, quiet but sure. Ariella blinked. “What’s that supposed to mean?” Another shrug. “Just an observation.” Before she could reply, her phone buzzed. A message from her dad: Outside now. She looked back at Zayn once more, unsure what to say. But she offered a small, polite smile. “See you tomorrow.” He nodded slowly. “Maybe.” She walked out, heart racing, thoughts spinning.
