Ronan.
Of all the people who could have been standing outside that house, it had to be him.
I looked at my mother. She was already shaking her head before I even said anything.
“Don't open the door,” she whispered.
The knocking came again.
“Open the door.”
His voice was calm, but there was something serious about it.
Clara walked towards the door.
“Clara, wait,” my mother said.
Clara turned around. “If he wanted to hurt us, he wouldn't be knocking.”
She unlocked the door.
Ronan walked in with one man behind him. The man stayed near the door while Ronan looked around the room.
Then his eyes found me.
He didn't say anything.
His eyes moved to my mother, then to Clara, and finally to the wooden box on the table.
His whole face changed.
“Where did you get that?”
Clara folded her arms.
“You know where it came from.”
“I asked where you got it.”
“My father gave it to me.”
Ronan looked at my mother.
“You still have it?”
My mother didn't answer.
I looked at the box.
“What is inside?”
Ronan looked at me.
“Aria, you need to come with me.”
I almost laughed.
“No.”
His eyebrows came together.
“You don't understand what's happening.”
“Exactly. Because nobody will tell me anything.”
I pointed at the box.
“My mother says I have a wolf but it's sealed. You say I'm your mate but I'm forbidden. Clara has a box that belonged to my father and somehow everyone knows what is going on except me.”
Ronan stayed quiet.
I was getting more angry by the second.
“So no, I'm not going anywhere with you.”
He took a step towards me.
“I am trying to keep you safe.”
“You could start by telling me the truth.”
His jaw tightened.
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because you're not ready.”
I stared at him.
“I'm twenty-two.”
“I know.”
“Then stop treating me like a child.”
He looked away for a second.
I could tell he was trying to control his temper.
That only made me more annoyed.
“You rejected me.”
His eyes came back to mine.
“I know.”
“You said I was forbidden.”
“I know.”
“And now you're here telling me to trust you.”
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“You really expect me to do that?”
“No.”
His answer surprised me.
“I don't expect you to trust me.”
“Then what do you want?”
“I want you alive.”
I didn't know what to say to that.
My mother walked over to the table and picked up the box.
“Ronan, you shouldn't be here.”
“I had to come.”
“Why?”
“Because they know.”
My mother's face changed.
“Who?”
Ronan didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, “The Blood Moon Pack.”
I had heard the name before.
Everyone had.
They were one of the strongest packs in the territory, and people didn't usually say good things about them.
“Why would they care about me?” I asked.
Ronan looked at me.
“Because they know about your mark.”
My hand went to my chest without thinking.
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“You're the Alpha. How can you not know?”
“Because someone inside my pack told them.”
My stomach dropped.
“Someone in your pack?”
He nodded.
“There is a spy.”
Clara walked over to the window.
“Then they already know where she is.”
Ronan looked at her.
“Yes.”
My mother stepped forward.
“That's why you came here?”
“Yes.”
“And what exactly are you planning to do?”
Ronan looked at me.
“Take her to Blackwood.”
“No,” my mother said immediately.
I looked at her.
“Why not?”
“Because it's not safe.”
Ronan gave her a look.
“It's safer than here.”
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
My mother shook her head.
“You're forgetting what happened last time.”
Ronan went quiet.
I noticed it.
Something about what she said had clearly hit him.
“What happened last time?” I asked.
Neither of them answered.
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
I walked towards the table.
“If nobody is going to tell me, I'll find out myself.”
I reached for the wooden box.
Ronan moved quickly.
“Aria, don't touch it.”
I stopped.
“Why?”
He looked at the box.
“Because you don't know what it does.”
“Then tell me.”
He didn't.
That was enough.
I opened the box.
The silver necklace was lying inside.
It was simple. There was nothing special about it at first glance. Just a thin silver chain with a small crescent moon hanging from it.
I picked it up.
The moment it touched my skin, I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
I gasped.
The necklace fell from my hand.
My mother rushed towards me.
“Aria!”
I held my chest.
It felt like something was moving underneath my skin.
The mark began to burn.
Then it started glowing.
I looked down at it in shock.
Nobody moved.
Ronan stepped closer.
His eyes had changed.
They were no longer completely human.
They had turned gold.
“What is happening to me?” I asked.
He didn't answer.
“Ronan.”
He kept looking at the mark.
Then he whispered, “She's waking up.”
I looked at him.
“Who?”
My body suddenly went weak.
I grabbed the table to stop myself from falling.
And then I heard it.
A voice.
Not outside the house.
Not from one of them.
Inside my head.
It was a woman's voice, soft and calm.
Aria.
I closed my eyes.
“Who's there?”
My mother looked at me.
“Aria, what are you hearing?”
I opened my eyes.
“A woman.”
Ronan's face went pale.
“What is she saying?”
I swallowed.
“She called my name.”
The voice came again.
This time I could understand her clearly.
You have been asleep for too long.
I stepped back.
“No.”
Ronan caught my arm before I fell.
I pulled away from him.
“Don't touch me.”
He let go immediately.
I looked at my mother.
She was crying.
That scared me more than anything else.
“Mom, what is happening?”
She wiped her face.
“I don't know how to stop it anymore.”
“Stop what?”
She looked at the mark on my chest.
“Your wolf.”
I shook my head.
“No. You said she was sealed.”
“She was.”
“Then why can I hear her?”
My mother didn't answer.
Ronan did.
“Because the seal is breaking.”
I looked at him.
“And what happens when it breaks?”
He didn't say anything.
“Ronan.”
His eyes met mine.
“I don't know.”
For once, I believed him.
Then there was a loud crash outside.
Everyone turned towards the door.
The man who had come with Ronan drew his weapon.
Clara rushed to the window.
“There are people outside.”
Ronan moved in front of me.
“How many?”
“I can't tell.”
Another crash came.
Then a howl.
My heart started racing.
Ronan looked at me.
“Stay behind me.”
I wanted to argue.
But before I could, the front door broke open.
And three black wolves ran into the house.
