Encounter 13: Destined to Meet

1836 Words
“Doctor, I think you’re suffering from retrograde amnesia.” I felt my world stop at what the doctor had just said. Ohmygod. So this was the thing my guts were dreading for earlier. From my peripherals, Liam didn’t look shocked, but rather, was unconsciously nodding his head up and down. So, was this his hunch of me? But how does he even know things about me when I’ve never met him before? The thoughts in my head and the shocking news made me very nauseous. “D-doctor, where’s your bathroom?” I asked as I was trying my best not to spill everything on the spot. He pointed out a door on the right side of the room and I ran there without any second thoughts. Liam stood up immediately when he saw me but it looked like the doctor stopped him. “It’s a common reaction, let her be for a while.” I heard the doctor speak before I got inside and spilled everything in the circular basin. After several minutes of pushing and pulling with my guts, it finally stopped. When I got to look up in the mirror in front of me, that was when I got to reorganize my thoughts. “I-I have amnesia. Okay, why the f**k would I have amnesia?” I asked my reflection. ‘It’s like what the doctor said. The hospital may have lied to you about your real condition after the accident.’ I answered inside my head. “Huh, why the heck would a hospital lie to me? They wouldn’t get anything from it, though? Wait, did I have an enemy doctor there? But I don’t make enemies, let alone a professional at that age!” I once again exclaimed at my reflection. The two people outside must’ve been thinking that I had gone crazy, shouting at myself, but trust me. This method works. ‘Okay. I don’t know the answer to that question. Next?’ I gave up trying to connect the dots about that hospital. I’ll deal with them later. “Do I really have amnesia, though? I mean, I remember literally everything!” I hysterically asked. You could even ask me who my playmates when I was a child were, and I’ll clearly remember who they are, even the events when Lucas was just courting me and when we started dating! I could even remember the details of his ‘haven’ house—wait. Haven house? Something doesn’t sit right with me with that place. “Focus, focus!” I said to myself as I tapped my cheeks with my hands to regain focus. ‘Okay. How would I have amnesia when I remembered everything? Simple. Because I have amnesia, duh! There probably are memories I don’t remember, so because my brain thinks of them as non-existent, of course, I’d think I remember everything.’ Oh God. My string of rationality was holding on for its dear life. This situation is making me dumb. Before I could finally go insane inside the bathroom, I decided to end the self-investigation and went to clean up the mess I made and myself. I did a few breathing exercises to calm me down before I got out of the bathroom. When I was outside, the two were silent and the atmosphere was quite tense. Did the two of them talk about something serious? Before I could even get distracted, I let out a small cough to get their attention. “Okay. I’ve processed things. It’s bizarre, but alright, I’ll process everything. But doctor, are you… sure?” I made sure. “It’s not 100% confirmed, but there’s a big chance, considering the fact that there is brain damage like what showed up in the MRI scan, and you got involved in an accident. But to make sure, you’ll have to visit the hospital every now and then so we can run tests and scans for you and confirm everything.” He explained. It’s plausible, truly plausible. “Would… I be needing to talk with a psychologist? Or go through hypnosis or something?” I asked. I may be a psychologist, but this is a situation where I can’t even use my profession and knowledge to help myself. Years of academy training wasted, haha. “Originally, yes, you would’ve. But I think you won’t need to. Mr. Mirren will be the one to be of help to you. You’d actually be able to help each other.” Okay. Shall we connect some dots again? I can’t anymore. My brain is going to burst anytime now. The doctor must’ve seen my confused face and heard the cogs in my head failing to operate. “I think you may have noticed this already, but Mr. Mirren and I know each other, and I also know about his issues. And I can assure you that his story and your memories are indeed connected.” “Does that mean that he knows what my forgotten memories were? Is that an assurance that whatever he’d tell me is correct?” I asked frankly. Wow, what a small world, but what the f*ck and how the f*ck? “Not all of your memories, but memories that, when you get to remember, could trigger other lost memories of yours and recover them. But, I am not going to allow Liam to tell you anything in the meantime.” I already had a hunch that it is not to bombard my brain with information and worsen my condition, but should everything really be this hard? What did I even do in my past life that everything’s turning shitty now? “Firstly, it is still Liam’s decision if he’d open up to you about what happened. Second, you still need to undergo some tests and screenings and let your brain prepare and recuperate so that you will be able to slowly retain those memories without any complications. But, Liam can leave you clues like some keywords, or take you to places with a connection to what had happened.” He explained. If they’re encrypting the past with such words, then it means that it was really bad, enough for Liam to suffer like this. It also means that I have to be with him so that both of us can solve everything and recover. How did the events turn out like this? “You know, it’s like destiny brought you to each other. If I was a God, I swear I would’ve already seen a red string connecting your pinky fingers.” The doctor cheekily said. Both Liam and I unconsciously peeked at our fingers. Red string? Pinky fingers? Why… is that familiar? And what? “I would’ve still processed it if you only said that destiny brought us here together to solve our issues, but we’re not soulmates connected with a red string, doc.” I said, clearing up the situation. “Well, you’ll never know.” . . . . . “The situation is too bizarre, isn’t it?” Liam asked as we sat at a table in this expensive restaurant. We’re currently inside a 5-star restaurant where Liam led me so that he can give his apologies. Billionaire things, eh? “Considering the fact that you’re sitting there calmly when you’re someone who knows something about me that I don’t, then yes, it is,” I answered. This feels so unfair. “It’s the same thing for me, doctor. You know something about me that I don’t too. And that information made me live a hellish life for 5 years.” He said, smiling somberly. Now the tables had turned. Between the two of us with missing memories and information, I clearly didn’t suffer. I lived a content life with my loved ones and my job, and I think I could still live like that even though I don’t recover my memories if only my curiosity won’t eat me up. But what he got from it was hell. He couldn’t get the right help from other professionals, and now that he met the person who could, he needs to reopen his unfortunate past. What an ill fate. “What if… what if I don’t recover my memories and am not be able to help you?” I hesitantly said. It’s only a what-if, but there’s a chance. “You are already recovering your memories, doctor.” He said. “What? How do you know that? And let’s say that I indeed recover some small bits, but what if I don’t remember the whole thing?” “Well, that’s unfortunate, but alright, I guess. At least I got to meet you, the only hope I had.” I felt my heart beat wildly at what he said, and at the same time, I felt something tug at my heart and it hurt me a little. “I know something that you probably don’t, and it’s not connected to your lost memories or my issues. It’s one of the reasons why I had to meet you.” He said and smiled wickedly, and there was a glint present in his eyes. Another encrypted information. Is this guy going to kill me with heightened curiosity? “And what is that?” “I don’t know, maybe something the doctor said earlier?” He smirked. I was just about to speak when the waiter finally came and gave us the menu. To get back at him, I ordered the most expensive food they had. But, he just laughed and did the same as me. “You won’t be able to exhaust all of my money and get revenge for that. Try harder next time, doctor.” He grinned widely, looking very amused. “In our next counseling session, I’ll only accept house and lot, stocks from your company, or one million as a consultation fee,” I said, half-joking and half threatening. “I can definitely report you for that and get your title and license stripped off. But if I do that, I’ll lose my psychologist, won’t I? Alright, then.” He said and acted as if he gave up, and even let out an exaggerated sigh. “By the way, will you… tell any of your loved ones or close people about your amnesia?” He warily asked, which made me pause. That wasn’t something I'd even considered nor thought of doing so. But why? I’m sure it’s completely normal for me to say that to either Lucas, Charlotte, Irene, or any other person close to me. They might even be able to help me recover. But something inside me was telling me—no, it’s like it’s even screaming at me to not tell anyone, or at least tell only one person. But yet again, why? The fact that I was having such a heavy gut feeling and all of them had been right every time, is confusing me much more. “Yeah, I will.” I confidently told Liam. Or will I?
