Encounter 14.1: Why?

1063 Words
As we finished eating our dinner, we decided to go home as it was already getting very late, and Liam got a call from his mother so he had to go first. I watched his car leave before I went to mine. As I got to the opening of the parking lot, I stopped the car for a moment. In front of the restaurant where we ate was a cozy-looking café, and there, Irene was sitting by the glass windows but she seemed to be very out of it. I wanted to accompany her, but basing from her somber expression, it might be best to just let her be by herself for a while, and I’ll comfort her later. While I was driving home, my mind and my gut feeling were still debating whether I should tell them or not. If I decide to tell them, I’ll start to feel really bad inside, but when I decide not to, I get to calm down. I think my body is broken. When I finally got home, I nearly had a heart attack at what greeted me when I opened the door. “OH F*CK… LUCAS?!” I screamed. Lucas was just there, sitting on the sofa facing the door, all the lights turned off. If it wasn’t for the moonlight illuminating his face, I would not have seen him. “What are you doing here? You should’ve texted me that you were coming so I would’ve gone home early. And why are the lights turned off?” I asked as I shuffled through the house and turned the lights on. Now that I got a clear view of him, he had an intimidating aura around him and he was crossing his arms as he stared at me. “Is there something wrong, babe? You seem very serious.” I warily said. “Did you have fun eating at a 5-star restaurant?” He asked, and I paused in my tracks. How… did he know? “H-huh? How did you know about that?” I curiously asked. He didn’t answer me for a while and just went to scroll at his phone. I thought he was just going to ignore me, but he flashed his phone screen in front of me. What showed up was a picture of me and Liam eating at the restaurant earlier, and both of us were smiling. The photo must’ve been taken at that time when I teased Liam about giving me a very high consultation fee. It was a very clear view since our table was right beside the glass windows of a restaurant. “Where did you get this from?” I asked once again. Am I getting tailed or something? “Is that what’s important right now? Why were you seen eating in such a high-end restaurant with that CEO who took you to the hospital? Tell me, he isn’t just a patient, right?” He angrily said. This is the worst version of Lucas right now. Irrationally jumping to conclusions. “What made you think like that? And no, Mr. Mirren is JUST patient, Lucas. Are you thinking that I’m cheating on you just based on a picture?” I asked, trying my best to control myself. If both of us get irrational and angry here, we never know what may happen, so I had best stay calm. “Ha, is that really all? Should I believe you?” He said, mocking me. F*ck, why is he being like this now, right when I’m already so complicated with all the things happening around and with me? “You won’t? Alright, then hear me out. Mr. Mirren is a patient of mine. We went to the hospital earlier—“ “Why? Because you fainted again? Do you do that on purpose when he’s around—“ SLAP! “Get back to your senses, Lucas! We went there because of something important, which is connected to the reason why he’s having a consultation with me, a psychologist! It’s a normal thing and is literally part of my job! And do you think my fainting is something not to take seriously?!” I exclaimed after slapping him, unable to control myself anymore. He doesn't even know what was happening to me that I was fainting so frequently. How dare he brand me as someone like that? “Really? And you went to a restaurant after that instead of just going home? Was that a date?” He asked in that mocking tone again. I breathed deeply and prepared myself for what was going to happen next, because for sure, what I’m going to say is going to be misunderstood. “Mr. Mirren had a bad attitude towards me when our first counseling started. He wanted to apologize to me earlier by treating me to dinner. That was all of it. A simple patient-doctor relationship, not like what’s going on in your head right now, Lucas.” I explained, but nothing seems to get right through his head right now. My heart almost dropped when he threw away the lampshade sitting right beside him on the floor, causing it to break and make a very loud noise. Suddenly, I felt myself shiver and my body just went cold after what he did. But what’s odd is that I am not someone who’s that sensitive. I would’ve even shouted at him after doing that, but now, my body was shaking too much and tears were threatening to fall down. After a while, he stood up and went for the door, bumping strongly into me in the process, and I was sure it was intentional. I almost fell down to the floor if only I hadn’t been able to hold onto the backrest of the sofa, but he didn’t even turn his head at me, then went to loudly shut the door. I was shocked for a moment before my body eventually gave up as I dropped on the cold floor beside the broken lampshade. The tears started cascading down my cheeks and my sobs became louder and louder as time passed by. “s**t… w-why, Lucas? What d-did I do wrong?” I asked through sobs. We went through fights in the course of our relationship, but there never was an act of violence back then, unlike what happened earlier.
