Encounter 11: Truth?

1570 Words
Came barging in were Lucas, Charlotte, and Irene. They all looked like they came rushing into the hospital after just getting off their work. I’m so lucky to have them, really. Even though my dignity is rock bottom because of them now. “Babe, what happened? What did the doctor say? Are you alright?” Lucas asked first as he came to check on me in the hospital bed. “Nothing that big, really. They said it was due to stress.” I answered. I wasn’t lying, but I did omit information about what the doctor told us. From the side, I saw Ella and Liam throw glances at me. They must be wondering why I did that, but they didn’t say anything. “Will you be discharged today or do you need to stay here for a while? Do we need to bring you additional clothes?” Irene asked, going hysterical again. I suddenly remembered that time when she saw me and Liam in the restaurant after that encounter with the man in black. Charlotte nodded after she spoke. “Ah, you guys, really. I’m getting discharged today, but they told me I need to stay for a little while so that I could rest under their surveillance. I told you, it’s nothing that bad. I’ve undergone worse than this back then, right?” I said, reassuring them. I felt the three of them freeze at what I said. Oops. They must’ve thought I was talking about that, but it wasn’t my intention, I was only talking about those times when we were still at university when I passed out from overworking and more. In the silent and tensed atmosphere, I saw Liam trying to observe the three of them, and his eyebrows furrowed afterward. Shit. I’ve only noticed this now, but behind the soft features of his face and mischievousness, Liam is a sharp person. “Oh, uh… by the way, who are you—wait, you’re the CEO of Mirren Group, right?” Lucas asked as he turned his direction toward Liam. “I’m a patient of Doctor Mendez. She fainted while we were having a session so I brought her here along with Secretary Perez here.” Liam explained while pertaining to Ella. So he even knows her surname now? And wasn’t he very mad and careful that he didn’t want anyone to know about his condition when he first called the hotline? Why the sudden change now? Lucas seemed to be wary of Liam, and he didn’t say anything for a while, so Irene spoke for him. “Thank you, Mr. Mirren.” She said. She looked like she still had something to say, but stopped herself. “You know him?” Lucas and Charlotte asked. “M-me? Haha, of course! You guys, I literally work in the same field as him. Our Mr. Mirren here came from a very influential family like he himself, you know?” Smooth Irene, very smooth. But I knew that was just an excuse. I now also know what she was about to say earlier. Liam shyly nodded but went to smile proudly in the corner at what Irene said. Poor Liam, he must not have sensed that he was being used as an excuse. He also seems like a sucker for compliments, just like me. I mean who isn’t, right? After that chaotic encounter in my hospital room, Liam and Ella excused themselves and went home. That only leaves the three ‘guarding’ me. All my movements were watched by them, and I can’t even do anything by myself because they’re the ones who do it for me, such as simply feeding me, opening the bathroom door, etc. It was already around 8 in the evening when Lucas excused himself for a call and Irene went to the bathroom. Now that only leaves me with Charlotte in the room. “Charlotte, have you and Lucas fixed your fight and problem the last time?” I frankly asked. My investigation had begun, and I was expecting her to say the same as Lucas, but I was wrong. “Well, it’s quite alright now, but we’re still not talking to each other.” She shortly said, trying to avoid my gaze. “Would you… mind telling me what you were fighting about?” I asked, my heart beating wildly with anticipation. “I saw Lucas with another woman in a restaurant.” . . . . . “Good morning, Doctor! Are you feeling well now?” Ella brightly greeted me as I entered the clinic. I had to force a smile to match her energy. “Morning, Ella. I am, I wasn’t just able to sleep very well last night.” I said as I took off my jacket and replaced it with my white coat. “It’s only 7:30, doctor. You should nap for a while, I’ll wake you up.” She said, then pushed me inside a small room with a double-decked bed inside. It’s what we call ‘the sleep pod’ in the clinic, where both of us rest at times we need it. I had no choice but to agree with her, and in a little while, I was already lying in the comforts of a bed. But I wasn’t able to sleep at all. My mind keeps on going back to what Charlotte told me last night. “I saw Lucas with another woman in a restaurant.” A deafening silence filled the room as it took me longer to process what she had just said. “H-huh? You guys… were fighting about that? Lucas… never told me.” I said, the last statement being a low mumble. “Yes. It’s the reason why I couldn’t tell you last time. But don’t worry! We’ve resolved and cleared the problem.” She said, her voice slightly raising as she assured me. “It’s a spur of the moment, you know? I was on my way to lunch when I saw him and a woman inside the restaurant. I just kinda went irrational and hysterical at that moment. Then, when we met at the university, that’s when I angrily confronted him and the fight started. Turns out, she was a co-worker he was working with in a project.” “I’m really sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, it’s just that I didn’t want you to worry and overthink, so I decided to clear things up first.” She apologized. “Then… why are you guys still not talking now? Awkwardness?” I asked. That sums up why earlier, the two of them seemed to be very wary of each other. “Well, yeah. Kinda.” That was how our conversation went on until Irene came back and Lucas followed later on, then I got discharged and they sent me home in a convoy. The situation was cleared up and Charlotte told me what happened, but my gut feeling was telling me that something was peculiar in the situation. This is why sometimes, I don’t know if I should be thankful for it or not. It keeps me up at night, but it has saved me many times already in different situations. Knowledge is power, ignorance is bliss. F*ck it. First of all, why won’t Lucas tell me if the situation has already cleared up? I decided not to meddle with it any longer as my brain is already shouting at me to sleep. Luckily, I was finally able to. The day went by normally after I woke up. There were patients, we took a lunch break, and so on. Until the phone for hotline counseling rang. “Good afternoon, this is Doctor Mendez from MD Psychology Clinic, how may I help you?” I introduced myself. This feels so bad, like a déjà vu. “Doctor, are you free later?” OHMYGOD. No wonder I had a bad feeling about this and got déjà vu, I was speaking to the devil incarnate! “What the— Mr. Mirren, is this you? Please don’t use the hotline for such purposes.” I scolded. Is he nuts? “Yeah, yeah. Sorry doctor. But are you free later, after work?” His apology doesn’t even seem sincere with that amount of mischief in his voice. “Yes. Why do you ask? And no, I am not coming with you or whatsoever you’re planning.” “Let’s get you an MRI scan,” He said, which made me pause. I didn’t expect that from him, but he was right. The doctor requested me to do so, but why would he go to such lengths as even accompanying me? “That’s something I could do by myself, Mr. Mirren. Now, do you have any actual concerns?” I said in a serious tone. He didn’t answer for a while and eventually ended the call. What the f*ck. Seriously, with all the amount of curses I’ve said after meeting him, I already got a ticket to hell. I thought he had given up as he ended the call without saying anything, and fortunately, the afternoon went by as peacefully as normal as it could. But that was a very short-lived moment, I realized, as I was getting ready to go home after we closed. WHY THE HECK WAS LIAM MIRREN STANDING BESIDE HIS CAR OUTSIDE MY OFFICE? “Pleasant evening, Doctor."
