CHAPTER THIRTEEN

1922 Words
"I have a dinner meeting with the European board tonight," Anthony said, a subtle, reluctant crease appearing between his brows. "I will be back by nine." "I know," Jasmine said gently, reaching up to adjust his silver tie with practiced ease. "I'll be in my studio working on the new proposal anyway. But if you're late past nine-thirty, I'm taking the master's bed to myself." Anthony’s eyes darkened slightly, a quiet, possessive smirk touching his lips as he leaned in close to her ear. "I will be home by eight-forty-five." Jasmine smiled, pressing one last kiss to his jaw before gently pushing him toward his leather briefcase on the console table. "Go run your empire, Anthony." He grabbed his jacket, offering her a lingering, intense look from the threshold—the look of a man who finally knew what he was coming home to—before stepping out the door. Jasmine stood in the sunlit kitchen, taking a sip of her warm coffee, her chest filled with a quiet, solid peace. She turned back to her blueprints, ready to build her day, completely secure in the life they had created together. The glass-walled atrium of the university’s design wing was buzzing with the frantic energy of mid-semester studio reviews. Coffee cups littered every flat surface, trace paper rustled like dry autumn leaves, and the air smelled heavily of dry-erase markers and cheap espresso. Jasmine sat at a long communal table near the back, her laptop open beside a mountain of site-analysis foam board. She was supposed to be tweaking the elevation scale for her thesis project, but her hand had been hovering over the trackpad for five minutes without making a single click. A Venti iced Americano slammed onto the table next to her elbow, making her jump. Chloe slid into the plastic chair across from her, shoving her oversized sunglasses onto the top of her head. Her sharp, hazel eyes scanned Jasmine’s face with alarming efficiency. "Alright, spill," Chloe commanded, leaning across the table and pointing an accusatory acrylic nail at her. Jasmine blinked, trying to pull up her usual composed expression. "Spill what? I’m calculating cantilever loads." "You haven't calculated a damn thing in ten minutes, Jas. You’ve been staring at that blank wall with this... infuriatingly soft look on your face," Chloe whispered aggressively, casting a quick glance around to make sure none of their classmates were listening. "And don't think I didn't notice the sweater." Jasmine pulled the collar of her oversized cream sweater a fraction higher up her neck. "It’s cold in the atrium." "That is a $900 cashmere sweater, it clearly belongs to a six-foot-two billionaire, and you are literally glowing from three feet away," Chloe said, her jaw dropping as the realization hit her. She gasped, slapping a hand over her mouth. "No. You didn't." Jasmine felt a sudden, burning blush sweep from her collarbone straight to her cheeks. She quickly reached for her coffee, taking a long sip to buy time, but her guilty silence was a total confession. Chloe leaned in so close her forehead nearly touched Jasmine's. "You and Anthony? Finally?!" "Keep your voice down!" Jasmine hissed, looking around frantically. She took a quiet breath, her heart doing a strange, fluttering flip just at the thought of him. "Yes. Okay? Yes." Chloe buried her face in her hands, letting out a muffled scream of pure dramatic joy before popping back up. "Details! I need context! Was it... I mean, weeks ago you were ready to throw a twelve-million-dollar check at his face and run for the hills. What changed?" Jasmine set her coffee down, her eyes softening as her mind drifted back to the penthouse—to the quiet rain against the glass, the way Anthony had knelt beside her sofa in his suit, and the devastatingly gentle way his calloused hands had held her in the dark. "He's not who we thought he was, Chloe," Jasmine murmured softly, her fingers tracing the edge of her laptop. "He doesn't know how to talk about feelings. He was raised like a corporate instrument, so he tries to fix everything with money or security because that's the only language he was ever taught." "And?" Chloe prompted, her eyes wide with genuine curiosity. "And he stopped trying to buy me," Jasmine whispered, a small, breathless smile touching her lips. "He stayed. He held my hand when I was exhausted. He gave me my own studio space in the apartment so I could work without feeling trapped... and then he removed the guest bed, so I had to come sleep next to him." Chloe let out a breathless, low laugh. "Wait—he dismantled the guest room to force you into his bed? That is terrifyingly possessive and wildly romantic." "It was," Jasmine admitted, her cheeks flushing a deeper pink. "And... when it happened... Chloe, he was so careful with me. He looked at me like I was the only thing in his entire world that mattered. It wasn't transactional. It was... intense. I’ve never felt so seen by anyone." Chloe watched her best friend closely, the teasing playful banter slowly melting away into profound, heartfelt relief. She reached across the table, squeezing Jasmine’s hand tightly. "You're in love with him," Chloe said softly. It wasn't a question; it was a simple, beautiful statement of fact. Jasmine caught her breath. The word hung in the air between them, sweet and terrifyingly real. "I think I am," Jasmine whispered, looking out the atrium window toward the distant skyline where Mercer Global's glass tower pierced the clouds. "I spent so long being terrified of losing my freedom to him. But standing next to him... I don't feel caged at all. I just feel like I finally have a place to land." "Good," Chloe smiled warmly, winking at her as she tapped Jasmine's blueprints. "Now, as happy as I am that your cold-hearted billionaire turned out to be a secret romantic hero... if you don't finish this site elevation by 2:00 PM, Professor Miller is going to destroy your freedom anyway. Get to work, Mrs. de Mercer." Jasmine laughed—a bright, clear sound that echoed lightly through the studio hall—and finally put her pen back to the paper, her mind completely at peace. The reservation at Le Petit Maison had been made under Anthony’s private assistant's name—a quiet power move that guaranteed the corner private dining room, secluded behind thick velvet curtains away from the main floor. Jasmine sat at the center of the plush leather banquette, wearing a tailored navy blazer over an ivory silk shell. She looked every bit the rising architect and the wife of a titan. Beside her, Anthony sat with relaxed, towering grace. He had unbuttoned his suit jacket, one hand resting casually over Jasmine’s knee beneath the table—a steady, warm anchor against the quiet storm brewing in the room. Across the table sat her parents. Her father, Richard Benitez, looked ten years younger than he had six months ago. The crushing stress of his impending bankruptcy had vanished, replaced by the plump, prosperous glow of a man whose debts had been quietly erased. Beside him, her mother, Eleanor, adjusted her pearl necklace—a new piece, no doubt purchased with the renewed line of credit Anthony’s legal team had secured for the family estate. "The sea bass is exceptional here, Jasmine," Richard said, his tone dripping with an artificial, booming warmth as he took a sip of vintage Pinot Noir. "You really should have let us host this dinner at the country club, though. I insisted to Anthony's secretary—" "Anthony prefers privacy, Father," Jasmine interrupted coolly, setting her water glass down with a precise clink. Richard blinked, slightly taken aback by her firm tone. Six months ago, Jasmine would have ducked her head, swallowed her anger, and quietly obeyed to keep the peace. "Well, yes, of course," Eleanor chimed in, offering a strained, overly polished smile as her eyes darted nervously between Jasmine and Anthony. "We just wanted to see how our daughter is settling into her new life. You look... well, Jasmine. Very elegant. The Mercer family influence suits you." A sharp, bitter edge sliced through Jasmine’s chest. The Mercer influence. Not her own hard work, not her late nights in the studio, but the man who bought her. Before Jasmine could speak, she felt Anthony’s fingers tighten gently against her knee—a quiet, silent I've got this. Anthony set his wine glass down, leaning forward slightly. The ambient light caught the sharp, predatory lines of his jaw. The relaxed air around him instantly vanished, replaced by the terrifying, arctic presence that made international CEOs sweat in boardrooms. "Jasmine does not owe her elegance to my family, Mrs. Benitez," Anthony said, his deep voice smooth, quiet, and laced with absolute steel. "She was brilliant, capable, and formidable long before I met her." Eleanor flushed, her hand instantly fluttering back to her pearl necklace. "Oh, Anthony, I only meant—" "I know what you meant," Anthony cut in softly, his dark eyes shifting directly to Richard. "I also know that the restructuring of Benitez Logistics was completed on Tuesday. Your company is back in the black." Richard’s posture straightened with a flash of eager relief. "Yes! Anthony, I truly cannot thank you enough. The way your firm handled the creditors—" "I didn't do it for your company, Richard," Anthony said, his tone flat, dropping the temperature in the room by ten degrees. "I cleared your debt because it was part of the agreement to secure Jasmine’s peace of mind. But let me be entirely transparent." Anthony rested his forearms on the table, towering over the older man despite sitting down. "The contract is fulfilled," Anthony continued, his dark eyes unblinking. "Your business is stable. Which means you no longer have any financial leverage over my wife. If you ever attempt to use her, guilt-trip her, or treat her like a commodity to be traded for your own salvation again... I will dismantle Benitez Logistics before the market opens the following morning." The private room fell into a suffocating, absolute silence. Richard’s face drained of color, his fork pausing halfway to his plate. Eleanor gasped softly, looking at her husband in absolute shock. Neither of them had expected the cold, transactional billionaire they had made a deal with to stand up as an unyielding wall of protection in front of their daughter. Jasmine stared at Anthony, her breath catching in her throat. She looked at her father—the man who had sold her freedom to save his own skin—and then at Anthony, the man who had bought that freedom only to hand it right back to her. For months, her parents had treated her like a sacrificial lamb. But sitting here tonight, Jasmine realized she wasn't a victim anymore. She had the love and protection of a titan, and more importantly, she had found her own voice. Jasmine reached over the table, sliding her hand into Anthony’s on top of the tablecloth. He instantly turned his palm up, lacing his long, strong fingers firmly through hers. "Anthony is right," Jasmine said, her voice steady, clear, and utterly devoid of fear as she locked eyes with her father. "I came tonight to tell you that the debt is settled. But from now on, my life, my career, and my marriage are mine. You don't get to manage me anymore."
