CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

1582 Words
The late-afternoon sun hung over the Tyrrhenian Sea, casting a brilliant, liquid-gold sheen across the Cliffside gardens of the Amalfi estate. The air smelled of crushed sea salt, blooming bougainvillea, and sweet orange blossoms. Two hundred guests sat in cream linen chairs lined up along a sheer stone terrace that felt as if it hovered between the sky and the waves below. In the bridal suite, Chloe smoothed the lace train of Jasmine’s bespoke ivory gown. The dress was a masterpiece of clean, architectural lines—a structured silk crêpe bodice that sculpted her torso, flowing into a soft, cascading skirt with a sweeping six-foot train. "If you cry and ruin your mascara, Jas, I’m telling the press you married Anthony for his money," Chloe threatened jokingly, though her own hazel eyes were brimming with tears. She adjusted Jasmine’s veil with delicate, trembling fingers. "You look... honestly, you look breathtaking." A soft knock sounded at the double doors. Her father, Richard, her mother, Elena, and her younger brother, Leo, stepped into the room. Leo, sharp and handsome in his first tailored tuxedo, instantly let out a low whistle. "Damn, Jas. You actually look like a princess." "Leo, language," Elena fussed automatically, though her eyes were shining as she smoothed Jasmine’s veil. "You look beautiful, sweetheart." Richard stepped forward, his eyes thick with a quiet, humbled emotion. The tension of the past years had completely vanished, replaced by a profound respect for the woman his daughter had become. "Jasmine," Richard said quietly, his voice catching slightly. "I know I made mistakes. I know I almost cost you your future. But seeing you today... standing so strong, loved by a man who truly honors you... it’s the greatest pride of my life." Jasmine took a steadying breath, stepping toward her father and taking his hand. "Thank you, Dad. I'm just glad you're all here." The swell of a string quartet executing a sweeping, modern arrangement filled the Cliffside air as the ceremony began. Standing at the altar before a soaring wrought-iron arch wrapped in white roses and eucalyptus, Anthony waited. He was devastatingly handsome in a classic black velvet tuxedo. His hands were clasped in front of him, his broad shoulders squared, but his eyes were fixed on the aisle with a raw, restless intensity. Beside him stood his closest advisor as best man, while Chloe walked down first in an elegant dusty-rose gown, giving Anthony a subtle, reassuring nod. Then, the music shifted. Jasmine appeared at the head of the terrace aisle, her arm resting gracefully over her father’s elbow. The moment Anthony saw her, his breath completely hitched. The formidable, unshakable titan of the business world visibly swallowed hard, a rare, shimmering glaze covering his dark eyes. The quiet, possessive warmth in his gaze was so intense that the surrounding guests faded into absolute background static. Richard walked Jasmine down the aisle, stopping at the altar steps. He placed Jasmine’s hand directly into Anthony’s large, warm palm, offering a quiet, respectful nod before taking his seat beside Elena and Leo. When their hands met, Anthony tightened his grip instantly, pulling Jasmine up onto the stone platform beside him. His fingers were warm, steady, and unyielding. "You are breathtaking," Anthony whispered, his deep voice thick with a quiet, hoarse emotion meant only for her. "You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. de Mercer," Jasmine whispered back, her radiant smile matching the golden sun dipping over the sea. The officiant spoke, but for Jasmine and Anthony, the world narrowed down to the steady rhythm of their breathing and the absolute truth in each other's eyes. There were no lawyers present, no financial clauses, and no contingency directives. When it came time for the vows, Anthony took her right hand in both of his, looking down into her dark eyes with terrifying, absolute devotion. "Jasmine," Anthony said, his deep voice carrying clearly over the gentle crash of the waves below. "I spent my entire life building walls to keep the world out, believing that control was the only way to survive. Then you walked into my life, and you tore every defense I had to the ground. You taught me that true strength isn't in contracts or fortresses—it is in loving someone enough to give them your entire heart. I promise to stand in front of you when you need protection, behind you while you build your skylines, and besides you for every step of our lives." Tears trickled down Jasmine’s cheeks, shimmering in the golden light. She squeezed his hands tight, her voice clear and sure. "Anthony," Jasmine murmured, her eyes locked onto his. "You gave me my freedom when you could have held me to a ledger. You showed me that love isn't a cage, but a place to land. I give you my heart today—not out of obligation, debt, or fear, but because you are my home. I choose you, today and every day after, for the rest of my life." "By the authority vested in me," the officiant smiled, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Anthony, you may kiss your bride." Anthony didn't wait. His large hands came up instantly, framing her face with reverent, fiery care as he drew her into a deep, lingering kiss that echoed with every vow, every storm, and every quiet victory they had shared. The Cliffside terrace erupted in thunderous applause. Chloe cheered loudly alongside Leo, while her parents wiped away joyful tears. When Anthony pulled back, his dark eyes were alight with a rare, triumphant joy. He kept her hand laced tightly in his as they turned to face their guests—not as two people bound by a contract, but as partners, equals, and a soulmate match built to last a lifetime. The morning sun poured through the high glass windows of the penthouse, catching the edges of a half-packed leather suitcase sitting open on the master bed. Jasmine knelt on the hardwood floor, a stack of heavy architectural portfolios neatly stacked beside her feet. She was wearing an oversized linen shirt and casual shorts, her hair tied back in a loose clip. Across the room, Anthony sat at the antique mahogany desk, his laptop open, flanked by two phones and a final itinerary printout. The frantic, multi-month chaos of the Amalfi wedding had finally settled, leaving behind the quiet, thrilling reality that they were officially, completely free. "Flight departure is confirmed for Friday morning at 6:00 AM," Anthony announced, his deep voice carrying smoothly across the room as he clicked send on a final email to his executive board. "The private aviation team has cleared the flight plan, and the villa in Santorini is prepped." Jasmine looked up from her packing list, raising a skeptical eyebrow. "Santorini? I thought you said our first destination was a surprise." Anthony closed his laptop with a crisp click, standing up and stretching his broad shoulders before walking over to her. A quiet, knowing smirk touched his lips. "It was a surprise. Until you accidentally found the confirmation folder on my desk last Tuesday." "I didn't find it," Jasmine defended playfully, standing up and dusting off her hands. "It was right on top of your tablet labeled Do Not Look, Jasmine—which is basically a formal invitation for me to look." Anthony chuckled, a rich, warm sound as he closed the distance between them, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her flush against his chest. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her familiar scent. "You ruined the element of surprise," he murmured against her skin, though his tone was entirely affectionate. "Well, you ruined my sleep schedule by scheduling an international flight at six in the morning," Jasmine teased, resting her hands against his chest. "It gives us forty-eight hours of complete solitude before your new project review at Harrison & Associates," Anthony reminded her softly, his arms tightening around her. "And trust me, Mrs. de Mercer, every single detail of those forty-eight hours has been meticulously calculated to ensure you do not think about a single architectural blueprint, zoning permit, or board meeting for two solid weeks." Jasmine smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck and leaning back to look into his dark, devoted eyes. "Is that an executive order?" "The only executive order I care about right now," Anthony whispered, his voice dropping an octave as his thumb gently stroked her cheek, "is making sure you take off your shoes, stop organizing your packing cubes, and come sit with me on the terrace." Jasmine laughed softly, giving in. "Deal." They spent the remainder of the afternoon finishing their final commitments—Anthony wrapping up his remaining Mercer Global delegation protocols and handing over interim control to his senior directors, while Jasmine emailed her final redlines to Marcus and the Harrison team. By evening, the last suitcase was zipped shut, the schedules were cleared, and the chaos of their dual careers faded into the background. Sitting side by side on the outdoor terrace loungers wrapped in a plush throw blanket, watching the city lights twinkle beneath a blanket of summer stars, they shared a quiet bottle of wine. Anthony pulled Jasmine close, resting her head against his beating heart. There were no contracts, no legal clauses, and no schedules left to manage—just the quiet hum of the city below and a lifetime of horizons waiting for them to build together.
