Jack Worth’s POV
After I returned with lunch, Kate seemed distant, she laughed and chatted whilst we ate but her mind seemed a million miles away.
I appreciated her effort at normalcy, I couldn only suspect she’d read Bella’s article belittling our relationship and selling a selfie of her, with me bare chested behind her, making her stir fry.
I didn’t push when Kate asked to go home early, I smiled and let her go.
She needed to think and so did I about tomorrow’s exclusive, I still had nothing to give them, to paint me in the tabloids as a changed man.
Not as a drunken, cheating, playboy from a wealthy family.
No that had changed, Since I’d began the path on my real passion.
That in a few short week’s I looked forward to doing full time, if everything went to plan.
As for tonight, I had other plan’s, I texted Kate to come see me around 10 tonight, I wanted to have a chat about a permanent job with me.
I needed to have a few drinks in my system to ask her. I feared her rejection, I couldn’t take anymore bad news today.
I’d pushed back the exclusive today but I needed to come up with something quick and she was the key to it all.
Kate POV
I got home that night early, I looked forward to some comfort foods and mind numbing reruns of the Simpsons.
I unlocked my door, letting it swing open, I saw an envelope on the ground.
On the front it simply read; To the assistant.
“Is that me?” I mumble, scooping up the letter as I walk through the doorway, kicking the door closed as I go.
I frown at the cursive font that stares back at me.
“Just open it Kate!” I huff with false confidence, before I can pause, I rip the letter open.
Inside the paper is a thick folded silver, I unfold it frowning as I do so.
“Expensive paper..” I mumble.
I begin to read;
“To the assistant of Mr Worth.
I would like to offer you the opportunity to earn double your currant wage.
You don’t know me, though I require the same services as Mr Worth, but have yet to find a suitable assistant.
I’d heard you’d taken on the job for 1 month, so far have been doing well from what I heard, I was looking to offer the same as Mr Worth with the difference of a permanent position.
Wage’s are negotiable, you have two weeks on your agreement, take that time to think it over.
At the end of that time I’ll be in touch, possibly before then.
Kind Regards W.W”
“Who is W.W? Double my pay? Do they know what I’m earning?” I scoff with surprise.
I not sure what to do with the letter, so for now, I place it on the bench and begin making myself some mac and cheese and pouring myself a coke.
I find my eyes flickering a few times to the letter.
$12,000 a month? What I could do with that sort of money, the truth was a lot, although I was on top of my bills, I had lived frugally before and now a little better, but it would be nice not to have to worry week to week.
I bit my lip as I think, I could save for a house, or a car or even a decent holiday.
A holiday, I hadn’t had one since before I left school, Tom had always promised we’d go some where but we never had.
At that moment my thoughts were interrupted as I heard my phone ping with a message.
“Who could that be?” I flustered.
2 new messages, flashed on the screen.
I unlocked my phone.
First was from Tom.
“Hey Kate, It’s Tom, Just wanted to say Hi, hope you are going well, and wondering if you might wanna grab dinner sometime?”
I scoff.
“You wish! Not on your life!” I grumble, texting back a quick, ‘Nah I’m good.’
Then I looked to the next message its from Mr Worth.
“Need you here 10 pm.
54 Flint Tower, level 6, South side Park.”
I look over at the clock, 6 pm now..
“Ergh..” I groan with annoyance.
“Ok, See you then.” I type in reply.
then I place my phone on silent and turn on the simpsons, coke in hand, slide down onto the couch.
I sigh, then quickly pick my phone up again, setting an alarm for 9.30.
“Best safe then sorry I suppose..” I grumble as I place the phone back on the coffee table and turn up the volume.
“What could he want that time of night?” I grumble to myself.
