The trail is serene, but my mind is anything but. As we start the hike, I find myself gravitating toward the back of the group. It’s not intentional at first, but it gives me the perfect vantage point to observe. My eyes are drawn to Juniper and Liam, who are walking side by side, just a few steps ahead of me.
Their interactions are... casual, at least on the surface. Liam occasionally glances her way, saying something that makes her smile. It’s not one of her full, radiant smiles, though, it’s softer, almost polite. She laughs at his jokes, but it doesn’t reach her eyes the way it used to when we were together.
