THE EMBER IN THE HEART

765 Words
The return to the city was silent and fraught with tension. Julian had vanished to his estates, likely to nurse his pride and plot a new strategy, while Elara was suspiciously absent from the Thorne manor. Lyra knew the peace wouldn't last. The reveal of Silas’s power had changed the stakes of the game. Silas had taken her to his private residence—a small, unassuming stone house on the outskirts of the capital that felt more like a fortress. Inside, the walls were lined with books in languages Lyra didn't recognize, and the air was thick with the scent of sandalwood and something metallic. "You’re bleeding," Silas said, gesturing to a scratch on Lyra’s arm from the briars. "It’s nothing," she replied, but he was already moving. He brought a bowl of water and a clean cloth. As he knelt before her to tend the wound, the domesticity of the gesture felt more intimate than the kiss in the woods. "Why did you do it?" Lyra asked softly. "In my other life... you were a ghost. Why did you intervene this time?" Silas paused, the damp cloth hovering over her skin. He looked up, his golden eyes searching hers. "Because in your other life, I was a coward. I watched you suffer from the shadows, bound by laws I thought were unbreakable. When you died... the world went gray. I realized that immortality is a prison if the only soul worth knowing isn't in it." He took her hand, his thumb tracing her palm. "I made a bargain. I gave up five of my tails—centuries of my life force—to turn the Great Wheel back. I didn't think you’d remember. You weren't supposed to. But your soul was so scarred by betrayal that it refused to forget." Lyra felt a tear slide down her cheek. "You gave up your divinity for me? I was just a human girl. A fool who let herself be killed." "You were never just a girl to me, Lyra. You were the sun." The romance between them, long simmering under layers of secrets, finally boiled over. Silas pulled her closer, his forehead resting against hers. The heat coming from him was manageable now, a gentle, pulsing warmth that made her feel safe for the first time in two lifetimes. "I am losing my humanity, Lyra," he confessed against her lips. "The more I use my power to protect you, the more the fox takes over. Soon, I won't be able to hold this form. I will be a beast, hunted by men like Julian." "Then we will run," Lyra said fiercely, her hands tangling in his dark hair. "I’ve spent my life being a pawn. I’d rather be a fugitive with you than a queen in a palace of lies." They spent the night in the quiet sanctuary of his home, talking of things both mundane and magical. Silas showed her how to read the stars through a celestial lens, and Lyra told him about the future she had escaped—the famine, the war, and the small joys she had missed. But as the first light of dawn hit the window, a loud banging erupted at the front door. "Lord Vane! By order of the High Inquisitor, you are under investigation for witchcraft and the harboring of a demonic entity!" Silas stood up, his face hardening. "Julian moved faster than I thought. He must have gone to the Church." "The High Inquisitor is Julian’s uncle," Lyra realized, her blood running cold. "They aren't here for an investigation. They’re here for an execution." Silas looked at her, his eyes flashing gold. "They want the fox. Let’s show them what happens when they catch one." He grabbed a hidden lever behind a bookshelf, revealing a narrow passage. "Go. This leads to the sewers and then to the Thorne vaults. I will draw them away." "No! I won't leave you!" "Lyra," he said, grabbing her shoulders. "If they capture us both, there is no one left to stop Julian. You have the grain. You have the people’s trust. Use it. I will find you. I always find you." He pushed her into the passage just as the front door splintered inward. The last thing Lyra saw before the stone door clicked shut was Silas standing in the center of the room, his shadow growing long and jagged, four white tails beginning to unfurl like banners of war.
