I rewrote the statement four times before I let myself stop editing it.
The first draft was too defensive, all sharp edges aimed at Damien, more about proving him wrong than saying anything true. The second draft was too careful, the kind of thing Monica would have approved without a single note, which was exactly why I deleted it. By the third draft I'd stopped trying to sound like a journalist and started trying to sound like myself, and somewhere in the fourth, it finally felt honest enough to post.
I read it one last time before I let myself think too hard about it.
