Bennett stood at the doorway, flashing a well-practiced smile as Maya’s parents walked him out with warm expressions. Her father clapped him on the back like they were longtime friends, while her mother chuckled at something he said.
“You should visit again soon,” her father said heartily.
“Very soon,” her mother added.
“I wouldn’t miss it for anything,” Bennett replied, shooting a glance at Maya, who stood rigid by the door.
Her mother turned toward her. “Maya, see him off.”
She didn’t hide her sigh as she stepped out into the cool night air, following Bennett toward his car parked just by the gate.
“You really know how to play your cards, don’t you?” she muttered, arms crossed.
