Chapter 1: The Unknown

1138 Words
It was nighttime, and the only source of light was the moon. A figure sprinted into the woods, running as fast as his legs could carry him. "Help!" the figure screamed at the top of his voice, then risked a glance back but didn't see his pursuer; still, he kept running. He ran past a series of trees, and suddenly his legs crashed against a fallen tree and he slumped to the ground. He wanted to keep running, but his legs couldn't carry him any longer. He was breathing heavily, and his clothes were drenched in sweat. He had been running for over five minutes and hadn't come to the end of the woods. This was the first time he had seen someone being killed, and the first time in his life he had been in this type of danger, so he ran for his life. He hid behind a tree, hoping his pursuer couldn't spot him. Pulling out his phone, he dialed an emergency number, but it wasn't reachable due to there being no network in the woods. "I should have stayed at the party. A few minutes ago, I was having a good time with my girlfriend, and now I'm being chased by a hooded figure who killed her." . . . . . . . A few hours ago .......... "I never thought it would be fun," Jude spoke with a smile on his face as he stepped out from the bustling nightclub, with his girlfriend by his side. Jane—she was a dark-skinned, pretty figure with dark hair. She was putting on a white, fitting short gown, which almost made her look naked, but she didn't care because it covered the part of her body she wanted to be covered. "We should do this often," she spoke as she gripped Jude's shoulder and relaxed on it. She was halfway drunk, so Jude's arms were more like support for her to walk. "Nah… I'm feeling headache right now. I decided to come to the nightclub today because you made me do it," Jude spoke. "So do you mean we won't come to the club again to have fun?" Jane asked. Although she was halfway drunk, she had a serious expression on her face. "Yeah, my fun is replying to company emails where I earn from, not getting myself drunk," Jude replied. "Are you serious right now?" Jane asked as she left Jude's arms. She almost lost control and fell to the ground, but Jude quickly grabbed her. "Don't worry, I got you," Jude said as he grabbed her arms and quickly wrapped his left hand around her waist. A black Mercedes G-Wagon drove by and pulled up in front of them. Stepping out of it was a man dressed in a black suit. His polished black shoes reflected the light. He was a valet. "Here you go, sir," the valet spoke as he bowed his head and handed over the key to Jude. "Thanks," Jude said as he collected the key. He opened the door and gently led Jane to her seat, which was made for her as his passenger princess, then shut the door and walked to his. Starting the car, Jude drove out from the club arena to the road, and neither he nor Jane spoke a word to each other. It was the middle of the night, and aside from the club, the whole street was quiet. Not a single soul was on the road, and on the sides were dark forests filled with tall trees. "Hum," Jude cleared his throat. He gazed at Jane for a while, then turned to stare forward. "It's alright. I'm sorry, Jane. I know what I said earlier really got to you. You know you can't keep up with that sad face. You're my heartbeat. Without you, I'm dead. So right now, I'll do whatever you want me to do," Jude spoke, eyes still focused while driving. From the side, Jane couldn't help but let out a bright smile. Jude's words moved her anger away, so she couldn't help but smile at him again. "I know you would say those teasing words of yours to make me smile," Jane blushed, then put on the serious face again. "But the thing is that you always spend time at work. You barely gave me attention, and yet I asked for only one thing from you. Being drunk is always my fantasy, and you know that. So all I asked from you is to get drunk with me, even if it's three times a week. After a long day at work, we'll get drunk together." "Huff," Jude took in a deep breath, then spoke. "Like I said earlier, I'll do whatever you want." Jane blushed. Jude saying he would do whatever Jane wanted meant he would grant her fantasy. "I love you, baby," Jane mumbled. She leaned towards Jude with a smile on her face, and their lips crashed. Jude barely had time to concentrate on the driving, and he closed his eyes for a second, enjoying the moment. *Bump* The car bumped into something unknown, but Jude caught sight of a dark figure landing on the ground with a loud thud. "s**t… what the hell was that?" Jane spoke in a panicked tone as she broke off from the kiss. "I think we just hit someone," Jude said, panic in his voice, his heart beating faster. They both quickly opened the car doors and stepped out. Lying a few meters away from the car was a lifeless hooded figure. There were no signs of life in the figure. His neck was snapped and turned to his back. Most bones in his body were broken, and the floor was filled with a pool of blood. "s**t… we just killed someone," Jane spoke as she went on her knees, lips trembling and tears streaming down her face. "f**k… what have I done?" Jude said as he looked at the dead body. Guilt was all over him. He had never seen a dead body in his whole life. This was the first time, and he was the cause. While staring at the dead, wounded figure on the ground, his finger moved. "Oh… my goodness… did you see that?" Jude called for Jane's attention as he spotted the wodded figure's fingers twitching. On its finger was a ring with a skull image. His figure's finger twitched again, and this time, Jane saw it. "Oh my goodness! He's alive, Jude… let's get the ambulance quickly before we lose him!" Jane spoke. She placed her trembling fingers on the figure's waist, motivating him to stay strong. "Please stay with me… please don't die. We're calling the ambulance now." Jude ran to his car and grabbed his phone. He quickly dialed an emergency number.
