Back at my temporary apartment, I opened my laptop and typed "Everett Global" into the search bar. The screen filled with information about the massive conglomerate. It was a Fortune 500 titan, a business empire that Ivy League graduates would kill to get into.
I stared at the logo, my eyes narrowing.
I remembered how Jasper used to talk about the main Everett family. He spoke with a mix of longing and unearned pride, as if sharing a surname with Phineas Everett somehow transferred the man's brilliance to him by osmosis.
In our marriage, Jasper used his arrogance like a shield to hide his mediocrity. He tried to make me believe I was the one reaching up, that I was lucky to be associated with him. He fed on my self-doubt.
