Nova fastened her seatbelt as Elijah peeled out of the driveway, kicking up a cloud of red dust behind them as they pulled onto a rural dirt road. She sat in the passenger seat of his boxy, beat up, blue SUV and gazed out over the endless savanna that stretched out before them—dusty and dotted with spiky green grasses and strange, scrubby trees. At times, it reminded her of the deserts of Arizona and California, at other times, it looked more like some distant planet. She shifted in her seat, feeling uneasy.
