I sat beside Damien, shoulders squared and chin lifted, trying to project confidence even though my pulse thudded like a war drum. The six elders of River Moon were seated around the circular table, their expressions ranging from grim to outright irritated. Beta Drill also joined us, his face unreadable. He was still shaken by everything, especially my father's confession, though I caught the briefest flicker of curiosity in his eyes. “You are late,” Elder Norman said, his voice sharp enough to cut through my thoughts. “I was having breakfast with my husband,” I replied smoothly, refusing to look at Damien, though I could feel his approval radiating beside me.
