THE NEXT DAY LEAH The sun was just beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm golden light on Athena’s house as we stood at her doorstep. The air smelled of pine and cold. Tamara shifted behind me. “Should we be doing this?” she asked, her voice low and edged with uncertainty. Her eyes darted to mine, then back to the house as though she expected Athena to fling the door open and demand what we were doing loitering there. “What do you mean?” I replied, adjusting the scarf around my neck.
