Chapter 6     The Moon Queen’s Awakening

"If you let go of my arm, I will kill you," I hissed, my voice barely audible over the clattering of iron and the frantic thunder of our boots against the damp stone. Cassian’s grip on my wrist didn't loosen for a second. He pulled me violently into the darkness of the subterranean passage as a heavy spear slammed into the wall where my head had been a heartbeat before. "Save the threats until we aren't being hunted by my own royal guard, Seraphine!" He slammed a heavy oak door shut behind us, dropping a massive iron bar into place just as the guards hurled their bodies against the other side. The wood groaned under the pressure. Cassian didn't pause. He grabbed my hand again, dragging me deeper into the twisting underground tunnels beneath the palace. Sparks of raw, unbridled power flickered off his knuckles, casting grotesque, dancing shadows on the wet stone walls. "Why are you doing this?" I demanded, yanking against his iron grip while trying not to trip over the jagged stones. "You’re the Alpha King! You could have handed me to the High Council and saved your throne. Why risk everything for me?" Cassian spun on his heel, pulling me so close my chest bumped against his broad chest. His golden eyes burned with an fierce, untamed heat in the dim tunnel light. "Because if I let them touch you, I lose my soul anyway." Before I could process the heavy weight of his words, a cold, unnatural chill swept through the narrow tunnel, extinguishing the faint torchlight ahead. The air turned instantly to ice, coating our breath in pale white mist. From the darkness behind the heavy wooden door, the pounding stopped completely. A terrible, rhythmic scraping sound echoed down the passage, the sound of silver blades sliding against stone. "Too late," Cassian growled, shifting his posture instantly to cover my body with his own. A voice cut through the shadows, smooth and completely devoid of life. "By order of the High Council, you are stripped of your crown, Cassian. The female dies tonight, and the Shadow Hunters claim her head." I threw my back against the stone wall, my heart hammering against my ribs as Cassian shoved me down a steep, ancient stairwell. The icy shadow of the Council's elite executioners vanished behind us as he sealed the hidden trapdoor with a heavy stone slab. We ran blindly through the freezing dark until the tunnel opened into an forgotten underground chamber. Shafts of soft blue moonlight cut through cracks in the high ceiling, illuminating the worn marble pillars of an abandoned Moon Shrine. Cassian collapsed against a broken altar, a harsh gasp tearing from his throat. Fresh crimson blood soaked through the side of his black tunic, staining the stone floor. "Sit," I ordered, my hands moving on instinct as I rushed to his side. "I'm fine, Seraphine," he grunted through grit teeth, but his jaw trembled as he tried to push my hands away. "You're bleeding to death because you protected me," I snapped, ripping a clean strip of fabric from my inner skirt. I pressed the cloth firmly against the jagged wound on his ribs. He flinched, his fingers locking tightly around my forearm. As our skin touched, a sudden wave of golden heat rushed through my veins, washing over the pain in my limbs. The mate bond hummed between us, loud and undeniable in the quiet sanctuary. I looked up, meeting his gaze. For the first time, I didn't see the feared Alpha King who ruled with absolute power. I saw a man carrying the unbearable weight of a broken kingdom, willing to bleed for a woman who had done nothing but mistrust him. Cassian reached up, his thumb gently wiping a spot of dirt from my cheek. "You didn't run when you had the chance," he murmured, his voice laced with genuine awe. "You stayed." "I don't leave my allies behind," I whispered, my voice softening as I finished tying the bandage. He let out a breath that sounded almost like a laugh. "Allies?" Before I could answer, a soft glow flared behind us. On the far wall, illuminated by the moonlight, an ancient stone carving began to shimmer. We stepped toward it together. The weathered relief depicted an Alpha King, crowned in flame, standing side by side with a woman whose hands radiated bright, crescent moonlight. A Queen who didn't bow to his power, but shared it equally. Cassian stared at the image, his breath catching in his throat. "That's impossible." I stepped closer to the wall, tracing the glowing silver lines carved into stone. The symbols below the figures began to glow, translating directly in my mind. The Moon Queen had not been a lesser ruler or a quiet figure. She had ruled as an absolute equal, holding a powerful magic that balanced the Alpha King's raw strength. They were meant to govern together, bound by fate and shared authority. "She wasn't just his mate," I whispered, turning my face toward Cassian. "She ruled alongside him." Cassian stared at the carving, his jaw tight with disbelief. "The High Council erased her from our history," he said. "They made everyone believe the Alpha King rules alone." Before he could say another word, a sudden, violent crack echoed through the shrine. The heavy stone doors at the entrance exploded inward, sending sharp splinters of rock flying across the chamber. Dark figures cloaked in shadows glided through the dust, their silver blades gleaming in the light. The Shadow Hunters had found us. Cassian didn't hesitate for a single second. Even with his side dripping blood and his strength fading, he shoved me behind him, putting his entire body between me and the deadly assassins. He drew his heavy broadsword, his posture rigid and unyielding. "Cassian, you're badly injured!" I shouted, reaching out to grab his arm. "You can't fight them alone!" "I am not letting them touch you," he growled, his golden eyes blazing with fierce intensity. He didn't look back, focusing entirely on protecting my life instead of saving his own. "Run if you get the chance, Seraphine. I will hold them off." "No!" I cried, refusing to leave his side. Three Shadow Hunters lunged forward at once, their black blades cutting through the air toward Cassian's chest. Panic surged through my body, hot and blinding. I threw my hands out, desperate to shield him. Without warning, a searing heat tore through my skin. The silver mark on my wrist ignited with a blinding white light, violent and wild. A massive wave of pure power burst from my mark, roaring through the ancient shrine like an explosion, shattering stone pillars and throwing the attackers off their feet before anyone could strike a single blow. Cassian froze in shock as the force knocked him back against the wall. The blinding energy filled the cavern, leaving us both gasping in total disbelief. What had I just done?
