"Move, or I’ll gut you where you stand!" a guard screamed, drawing his broadsword as panic ripped through the arena concourse. Terrified servants collided into each other, dropping silver platters and crystal goblets that shattered across the flagstones. I didn't wait for the guards to close the distance. Remembering the chilling whisper echoing inside my head, I ducked beneath a nobleman’s flailing arm and bolted toward the servants' archway before the iron grates could drop. "Grab the girl!" an officer bellowed over the deafening chaos. I slammed my shoulder against a narrow wooden service door, slipping into the dark, damp passages beneath the arena. Dust filled my lungs as I sprinted down the winding stone corridors, my bare feet slapping against the cold floor. Behind me, heavy iron boots pounded against the stairs—the guards were already coming. My chest buckled with agonizing heat. Beneath my tunic, the star-shaped silver mark burned so violently I gasped, clutching my sternum as a white-hot pulse of magic pulled my body toward a crumbling archway on the left passage I had never seen in my five years of serving in the castle. The ancient stone arch was covered in moss, leading down into pitch-black shadow. "She went toward the lower tunnels!" a voice echoed from the main hallway. "Block the lower level!" I dove into the hidden passage just as a spear clattered against the stone doorway behind me. I pressed my back against the damp tunnel wall, holding my breath while heavy footsteps thundered past my hiding spot. High above, a sharp, wailing horn blasted through the stone walls. The sound vibrated in my teeth—the royal alarm. The High Council had officially ordered every gate sealed, locking down the entire fortress. The heat in my chest surged again, casting a soft silver glow over the dark, forgotten tunnel ahead. I pushed forward into the blackness, my heart hammering against my ribs, but a sudden low growl echoed from the shadows behind me. I froze. Two broad, heavily armored figures stepped out from the darkness, their silver blades dripping with dark oil. The Shadow Guards, Cassian’s elite executioners had already entered the lower passages, their lethal wolf instincts tracking the smell of my blood through the dark. The tall guard raised his blade, his eyes flashing yellow in the dim silver light. "The Council wants your heart on a plate, little servant." "If you move a single muscle, Priest, I will tear your throat out myself," I growled, my voice echoing off the high stone arches of the royal council chamber. The High Priest didn't back down. He pointed a trembling, spotted finger at my chest. "She must die before sunrise! The Moon Crown cracked because of her! Every king who claimed a forbidden mate lost his throne and destroyed his bloodline!" "He is right, Cassian," the Grand Councilor added, stepping between us, his eyes cold and calculating. "The kingdom will fracture by morning if that wolfless servant girl lives. You know the history. A forbidden mate brings total ruin." A fierce, agonizing pressure clawed at the inside of my ribs, the ancient mate bond screaming at me to find her, to protect her, to tear down anyone who dared threaten her life. I clenched my fists so tightly my leather gauntlets creaked, forcing my expression into absolute, unyielding stone. A weak king was a dead king. I had watched my father die for loving the wrong woman, and I refused to follow him to the grave. "I am the King," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous rumble that made the elders flinch. "I decide who bleeds in my castle." I turned toward the captain of my royal guard, masking the violent pulse of longing burning through my blood. "Capture the servant alive. No one touches a hair on her head until I have questioned her myself. If she dies before I get answers, every guard on shift will answer to my blade." "At once, Your Grace," the captain bowed, rushing out to give the order. I immediately stepped toward the strategic map on the central table, pointing toward the eastern barracks and the upper garden gates. "Send the elite Shadow Guards to secure the grand library and the northern perimeter walls. She is wolfless and panicked; she will head for the main exit." It was a lie. My inner beast snarled in protest, but I knew the servant girl had spent years working the lower servant corridors. She wouldn't run toward the guarded main gates. By sending my deadliest killers to the upper sections, I bought her precious time in the lower passages. Then my blood ran cold. A shadow guard rushed into the chamber, kneeling quickly. "Your Grace! Someone unlocked the secret iron gate near the lower cellars from the inside. Someone is guiding her." I stared at the map. Someone inside my own palace was actively protecting my forbidden mate. I sprinted through the unlocked iron gate, my lungs burning as I plunged deeper into the dark, forgotten passages beneath the castle. The silver mark on my chest pulsed with a strong, magnetic pull, guiding my steps through twisting corridors until the cramped tunnel opened into a vast underground chamber. I stopped, my chest heaving as the silver glow from my tunic illuminated the ancient ruins of a long-lost Moon Temple. Massive stone pillars reached toward the shadowed ceiling, covered in intricate, ancient carvings. I stepped closer to a massive mural carved into the central wall. It depicted a tall, regal woman standing beside a broad-shouldered, silver-eyed Alpha King. The woman held a glowing crown above her head, radiating pure, divine power. My breath caught as my gaze fell upon the woman's chest in the carving. Over her heart was the exact same star-shaped mark that was currently burning against my own skin. She wasn't just a servant. She was the forgotten Moon Queen. Before I could process the terrifying truth, the soft scraping of boots echoed against the stone floor. Shadows detached themselves from the darkness as five masked figures stepped out from every archway, surrounding me in a tight circle. Each one carried a curved blade, their faces completely hidden behind black cloth. I backed up until my spine pressed against the stone pedestal of the Queen’s statue, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Who are you?" I demanded, my voice trembling despite my effort to stay strong. "Did Cassian send you to kill me?" To my absolute shock, the assassins didn't raise their weapons. Instead, the leader of the group stepped forward, sheathing his curved blade. Slowly, deliberately, he dropped to one knee on the dusty stone floor. The four masked killers behind him immediately knelt in unison, bowing their heads in deep respect. "We are not here to kill you," the leader said, his voice echoing in the quiet temple. "We’ve been waiting for the Moon Queen’s heir." A sudden, bone-chilling cold swept through the subterranean temple, snuffing out the soft silver glow of my mark. From the deepest shadow behind the kneeling assassins, two brilliant crimson eyes ignited in the pitch-black darkness, glowing with terrifying, predatory rage. A heavy footstep shattered the silence, followed by a deep, dangerous voice that made the stone floor vibrate: "No one touches my mate." Cassian stepped fully into the dim light of the ancient chamber, his presence suffocating the room. Standing between these unknown allies and the king who was supposed to execute me, I felt the air grow impossibly thin. Every bloodline law demanded he tear me apart to save his crown, but as his crimson eyes locked onto mine, the burning bond between us flared, leaving him with a choice that would either destroy his throne or start a war.
