Chapter 1  The Crown’s Rejection

1190 Words
"If you spill a single drop of that wine on the altar, girl, I will personally carve the skin from your back," the overseer growled, shoving a heavy silver basin into my hands. "I won't," I whispered, forcing my fingers to lock around the cold metal handles. "Keep your useless, wolfless eyes on the floor," he hissed, giving me another push toward the towering double doors of the arena. "The High Priest is taking his place. If the offering isn't at the altar before the Alpha King steps onto the dais, your execution won't even need the Council's signature." He didn't wait for my response, turning to scream at a line of trembling attendants. I took a sharp breath, attempting to calm my racing heart, but the skin over my sternum suddenly ignited. A choked gasp tore from my throat. I nearly dropped the heavy vessel as a searing, violent heat exploded beneath my coarse linen tunic. It wasn't a gentle warmth; it felt as if someone had pressed a white-hot iron directly against my chest. Beneath my clothes, the strange, star-shaped mark I had hidden since childhood throbbed frantically. I pressed my wrist against the center of my chest, trying to smother the burning, but the agony only sharpened, pulsing in exact, terrifying harmony with the deep, echoing drums vibrating through the floorboards. "Keep moving!" an armored guard barked, slamming the butt of his spear against the stone right behind my heels. I stumbled forward into the roaring concourse, my knees buckling under the sudden weight of the pain. The heat was intensifying with every inch I was forced closer to the central altar. I squeezed my eyes shut, struggling to keep my breathing silent so no one would notice the tremor racking my frame. When I opened my eyes, the shifting sea of bodies swept me past a massive stone pillar. My gaze shot upward, catching the high, shadowed curve of the ancient vaulted ceiling. Above the iron braziers sat a faded, flaking mural—a painted woman standing amidst a swirling silver storm, a radiant crown resting upon her brow. She wasn't an Alpha. She was a Moon Queen. "Look down, curse you!" the overseer’s hand clamped around my upper arm like a vice, yanking me away from the pillar and dragging me into the perimeter line of servants. "The King is coming." The silver mark over my heart flared into pure agony. The massive iron gates at the far end of the arena slammed open with a sound like thunder, silencing the ten thousand roaring voices in an instant. Cassian Ashbourne walked into the hall. He didn't just walk; he owned every inch of space he moved through. Broad shoulders clad in black steel armor, his amber eyes swept over the silent crowd with terrifying, cold calculation. He was the apex predator of our world, a man who had ripped away his own humanity to become an invincible ruler. He climbed the stone stairs toward the high altar where the silver Moon Crown rested upon a slab of dark obsidian. "By blood, by battle, and by the sacred law of our ancestors, we offer the Moon Crown to King Cassian!" the High Priest bellowed, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone ceiling. "Let the Moon Goddess claim her rightful ruler!" Cassian knelt before the pedestal. His face remained a flawless mask of stone as the High Priest lifted the silver crown and held it hovering above his head. The ancient silver metal flared with blinding, divine light. Then, a sharp, deafening crack split the air. A visible fissure snapped down the center of the crown. Instead of descending onto Cassian’s head, the silver light recoiled violently, violently violently violently repelled by an invisible wall. The crowd drew a collective, terrified gasp. Cassian’s golden eyes snapped open, blazing with lethal shock. Before the guards could react, the crown’s abandoned light gathered into a single, piercing beam. It shot across the vast arena floor, completely ignoring the high-ranking Alphas, generals, and noble families. It slammed straight into my chest. A choked scream tore from my lungs as the impact threw me backward against the cold pillar. The silver mark over my heart burst through my rough tunic, glowing with a fierce, blinding brilliance that illuminated every dark corner of the room. A massive wave of ancient, undeniable magic surged through my veins, slamming a terrifying, suffocating longing into my chest. The High Priest dropped his wooden staff, the wood shattering on the stone floor. "The Moon Law..." the old man whispered, his trembling voice carrying across the silent, frozen arena. "The crown rejects the King... for a forbidden mate." My breath hitched as every single eye in the kingdom turned to stare directly at me. I was just an invisible servant girl without a wolf, but the divine light of the crown was wrapping around my body like a glowing chain, binding my soul to the most dangerous man alive. The silence in the arena vanished under a wave of violent noise. Chaos erupted everywhere. Nobles scrambled backward in terror, screaming and knocking over iron chairs, while high-ranking wolves bared their sharp teeth, their feral instincts inflamed by the sacred light burning across the room. "Blasphemy!" a High Council member roared, his furious voice booming as he slammed his heavy fist onto the wooden armrest of his chair. "She is cursed! A low-born parasite corrupting the holy coronation!" "Execution!" the High Priest demanded, his hand shaking violently as he pointed his bony finger straight at my chest. "The ancient laws are clear! A mate who rejects the King’s crown is a threat to the bloodline! She must die before sunrise to cleanse the throne!" At the top of the altar, Cassian slowly pulled himself to his feet. My breath trapped in my throat as his amber eyes locked onto mine across the open expanse of stone. The sheer force of the bond slammed into me like a physical blow, making my lungs ache for air. I saw it—a quick, blazing flash of recognition in his golden eyes, the undeniable pull of fate trying to bring us together. But in less than a second, his face hardened into impenetrable ice. He didn't step forward to protect me. He didn't say a word. He just watched me with the icy detachment of a tyrant calculating a risk. Heavy iron gates slammed down over every single archway with a deafening crash, sealing the arena shut. "Surround her!" an elite guard screamed, pulling his silver sword from its sheath. "By order of the High Council, do not let the cursed girl escape!" Armed soldiers formed a tight, lethal ring around me, their drawn blades gleaming under the dim torchlight. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I had no wolf to fight back, no family to defend me, and nowhere to hide. As the guards stepped closer, their heavy boots crushing the stone floor, a cold, disembodied whisper brushed against the inside of my mind, soft as smoke: Run... before the King chooses the throne over you.
