Alpha King Fredrick Heartfilia and his Luna, Queen Emerald Heartfilia, ruled the mighty Crescent Moon Kingdom. All the packs within its vast lands were loyal to their reign. The Heartfilias were Royal Wolves—stronger, more ancient than most—and their bloodline carried the legacy of leadership.
Their son, Prince Luke Heartfilia, was destined to inherit it all. Now that he had come of age, it was time for him to officially claim his title as the new Alpha King. His coronation was scheduled exactly two weeks from today, a day carefully chosen by his mother, who was feeling increasingly sentimental about that date, watching her son step into his destiny.
Luke had just returned home from the university, but his mind wasn’t on his upcoming coronation. Instead, he found himself still thinking about the girl he had met there—Aurora Moondrake.
Though his wolf, Striker, had reassured him that she wasn’t their mate (her scent wasn’t strong enough to trigger the mate bond), Luke couldn’t ignore the strange sense of protectiveness he felt toward her. It was almost unnatural—the way being near her calmed him, soothed some part of him he hadn’t realized needed soothing. Striker had suggested maybe Aurora was still too young for the bond to activate. It happened, sometimes, in rare cases where wolves were close but not yet of age.
Still, Luke couldn’t shake the feeling that Aurora was... different.
He had gone to the prestigious werewolf university not as a student, but to meet his best friend, Alpha Sebastian Lockhart, who had business there. Luke had personally invited Sebastian to his coronation.
As heir to the throne, Luke had lived much of his life in relative seclusion. Only a few wolves outside the royal court knew what he looked like or even that he existed. His parents had been overly protective, especially after what had happened almost two decades ago—a dark day that still haunted their family.
Luke sighed heavily as he climbed the stairs to his room. Aurora Moondrake. Her name danced through his mind. Her simple, tattered clothing didn't match the claim that she was the daughter of an Alpha. Normally, daughters of Alphas were treated like royalty within their packs—dressed elegantly, proud and strong. Yet, Aurora’s clothes had been worn and faded. He had seen the glances she received from the others—half disgust, half pity. And what disturbed him even more was the way Madeline, whom he gathered was her sister, treated her like a servant.
Luke frowned. Something wasn’t adding up.
He recalled what little he knew: Alpha Steve Moondrake was rumored to have three daughters. He couldn’t remember the names of the younger two, but Madeline, the eldest, was known for her ambition and sharp tongue. Aurora’s quiet dignity had been such a contrast, it only deepened the mystery.
A knock pulled him from his thoughts.
His mother, Queen Emerald, stepped into the room, wearing a soft smile. "Luke, dinner is ready," she said warmly. Then she paused, noticing the faraway look in his eyes. "Is something troubling you?"
Luke shook his head lightly. "Not really. Just... thinking about something confusing."
Emerald chuckled softly. "Does this 'something' happen to be a young lady?"
Luke blinked at her, half amused. "Sort of."
The Queen grinned brightly. "Oh, how exciting! Will you be introducing her to us soon?"
Luke laughed under his breath. "Mother, I met her just an hour ago. And she’s not even my mate."
Emerald waved her hand dismissively. "Mate or not, I can tell by looking at you that she’s already made an impression."
He shrugged. "Maybe. She’s... different. Mysterious and I liked her hair very much silver. I can’t quite explain it."
Emerald gave him a knowing look, her eyes twinkling. "Well, the Moon Goddess has her ways. Come now, let's not keep your father waiting. He’ll think we've run off without him."
As she turned and floated gracefully out the door, Luke smiled to himself and followed her down to the grand dining hall.
The family gathered around the long oak table, where dishes were already laid out. Before Luke could even pick up his fork, King Fredrick’s deep voice rumbled across the table.
"Son," he said, "your coronation is approaching fast. Have you found your mate yet? You know how important it is for an Alpha King to have his Luna Queen by his side. The Kingdom will expect it."
Luke set down his utensils carefully. "Father, not yet. I trust the Moon Goddess will guide me when the time is right."
Fredrick's brow furrowed slightly. "I pray that she does—and soon. The wolves of Crescent Moon Kingdom will want to see strength and unity in their future King and Queen."
Luke nodded solemnly. "I hope for the impossible," he said quietly.
Fredrick's gaze softened, understanding exactly what his son meant. It had been a long time, yet the wound was still fresh.
Queen Emerald, sensing the heaviness in the room, quickly interjected. "Come now, boys, let’s not dwell on sadness. This is a time for celebration! Let’s focus on Luke’s coronation."
Both men gave her grateful smiles. No matter how heavy their burdens were, Emerald always found a way to lift their spirits.
After a few moments, Fredrick cleared his throat. "Speaking of the coronation, we’ll need more Omega helpers. It’s going to be a massive event. Wolves from every pack in the Kingdom will attend."
"I’ll take care of it," Luke said. "I’ll ask Beta Erickson to post an announcement. We’ll recruit additional helpers to manage everything."
Emerald smiled warmly at her son, pride shining in her eyes. "You’re already thinking like a true King."
They spent the rest of the meal discussing preparations—security arrangements, seating protocols, feasts, and ceremonies. There was so much to organize in so little time, but Luke felt ready.
After dinner, Luke walked quietly back to his room, his footsteps echoing in the vast corridors of the castle.
Yet despite the weight of duty and the importance of the coming weeks, his mind drifted once again—to Aurora.
Her face. Her quiet strength. The way her presence seemed to touch something inside him he thought long buried.
Luke paused at his window, staring out over the darkened kingdom, the silver moon hanging heavy in the night sky.
"Aurora Moondrake," he whispered into the night.
"Who are you, really?"
As Luke gazed into the silent night beyond his window, a strange certainty settled in his heart — his fate was already moving toward him, hidden in the most unexpected place.
He just didn’t know how soon it would change everything.
