The cottage fell into complete silence.
The only sound was the crackling of the dying fire.
Lyra's fingers tightened around the silver pendant hidden in her palm. Her heart pounded so loudly she was sure everyone in the room could hear it.
The hooded stranger stepped forward, his black cloak brushing against the wooden floor. The soldiers behind him remained perfectly still, as if they were waiting for his command.
He lowered his hood.
Lyra's breath caught.
He looked no older than twenty. His raven-black hair framed a sharp, handsome face, while his striking silver eyes seemed to glow in the dim light. There was no cruelty in his expression, only an unsettling calm that made him even more intimidating.
"This isn't necessary," he said, his voice deep and composed. "Come with us peacefully, and no one in this village will be harmed."
Lyra instinctively took a step backward.
"I don't even know who you are."
"No," he replied. "But I know exactly who you are."
Her grandmother moved in front of Lyra, shielding her with surprising determination.
"You have no right to enter my home."
The stranger inclined his head politely.
"My apologies, Elder Mara. Had there been another way, I would have chosen it."
Lyra frowned.
"You know my grandmother?"
The old woman stared at him, her expression hardening.
"I know your family."
A flicker of emotion crossed the stranger's face before disappearing just as quickly.
"My name is Kael."
The room seemed to grow colder.
"I am the Crown Prince of Noctis."
The title hung heavily in the air.
Lyra had heard stories about the Shadow Kingdom all her life. Children were told that its people wielded dark magic and that its royal family had started the Great Divide centuries ago.
She had always assumed they were just stories.
Now one of them stood in her grandmother's cottage.
"You expect me to go anywhere with a prince from the Shadow Kingdom?" she asked.
"I expect you to survive," Kael answered.
Before Lyra could respond, a soldier rushed through the broken doorway.
"Your Highness!"
Kael turned.
"What is it?"
"The western watch has reported movement. Hundreds of them."
A deep roar echoed across the village.
Then another.
Screams erupted outside.
Lyra's blood ran cold.
Kael's expression darkened.
"They're here sooner than I expected."
He drew a long sword from his side. Unlike ordinary steel, its blade shimmered with faint silver runes.
Captain Rowan, who had arrived with several village guards, burst into the cottage.
"The beasts are attacking!" he shouted. "They've surrounded Silverbrook!"
Chaos exploded outside.
Windows shattered.
Horses screamed.
Villagers ran through the streets, clutching children as monstrous creatures emerged from the darkness.
One beast leaped onto a rooftop, its crimson eyes scanning the village.
It let out a roar that shook the night.
Kael looked directly at Lyra.
"They aren't attacking this village."
"They're hunting you."
Before she could answer, the monster crashed through the cottage wall.
Wood splintered in every direction.
Its enormous jaws lunged toward Lyra.
Kael moved faster than she could see.
His sword flashed.
A streak of silver light cut through the air.
The beast's claws stopped inches from Lyra's face before its body was thrown backward through the broken wall.
It landed outside with a thunderous crash.
Lyra stared at Kael in shock.
He hadn't even looked afraid.
The prince spun his sword once before lowering it.
"We're out of time."
He extended his hand toward her.
"If you stay here, everyone you love dies."
Outside, the village bells rang frantically as flames began to rise against the moonlit sky.
For one terrifying moment, Lyra realized the truth.
Her ordinary life had ended the moment she touched the crystal in the Temple of Selene.
Now, to save her home... she would have to trust the one person she had been taught to fear.
The village bells rang without pause. Smoke curled into the night sky as frightened villagers poured into the streets. Mothers clutched their children, fathers grabbed whatever weapons they could find, and elders shouted for everyone to head toward the village square.
Lyra's gaze remained fixed on Kael's outstretched hand.
Trust him?
Everything she had ever heard about the Shadow Kingdom told her not to.
"You expect me to believe you're here to help me?" she demanded.
Kael didn't lower his hand.
"I don't expect your trust. I only need your decision."
Another deafening roar shook the cottage. Dust drifted from the ceiling as the monster Kael had thrown aside rose once more, its crimson eyes burning with rage.
Captain Rowan stepped forward, raising his sword.
"Your Highness, take the Moonborn and leave! We'll hold them back."
"No," Lyra protested. "I'm not leaving everyone!"
She tried to push past them, but her grandmother caught her wrist.
"Lyra."
There was an urgency in Elder Mara's voice that made Lyra stop.
"You cannot save this village by staying."
Tears welled in Lyra's eyes.
"But if I leave, they'll think I'm abandoning them."
Her grandmother cupped her face gently.
"They are in danger because of what follows you, not because of who they are."
Lyra looked around the room. The broken wall. The frightened guards. The terrified villagers outside.
Every attack had been directed toward her.
Kael's words echoed in her mind.
"They're hunting you."
Before she could answer, a shrill scream pierced the air.
A young boy stumbled into the cottage, his clothes covered in ash.
"They took my father!" he cried. "Please... someone help him!"
Without thinking, Lyra rushed outside.
"Lyra!" Kael shouted.
She ignored him.
The village she had known her entire life was unrecognizable. Homes burned, carts lay overturned, and monsters prowled the streets like predators claiming new territory.
Near the well, she saw the boy's father pinned beneath a collapsed wooden beam. One of the shadow beasts stalked toward him, growling low in its throat.
Lyra grabbed a fallen torch.
"Hey!" she shouted.
The creature turned.
Its glowing eyes locked onto her.
Instead of attacking the trapped man, it lunged at Lyra.
She froze.
The torch slipped from her hand.
Just as the beast leaped—
A black blur crashed into it.
Kael.
He drove his rune-covered sword into the creature's shoulder, forcing it away from Lyra. The beast roared and swung a massive claw.
Kael blocked the strike, but the force sent him sliding backward across the dirt.
For the first time, Lyra saw strain on his face.
The beast was stronger than the one in the cottage.
Captain Rowan and the village guards joined the fight, surrounding the creature.
"Go!" Rowan shouted to Lyra. "We'll handle this!"
Lyra shook her head.
"No!"
The crescent mark on her wrist began to glow again.
It started as a faint shimmer, then brightened until silver light spilled between her fingers.
A warm energy spread through her body.
The pendant around her neck vibrated.
Kael noticed immediately.
"Lyra..." he warned.
But it was too late.
The light burst from her wrist like a wave.
It swept across the village square, washing over the monster.
The beast cried out, staggering backward as dark smoke rose from its body. Its crimson eyes flickered, and for a split second, they turned a soft golden color.
Then, as suddenly as it had changed, the creature dissolved into black mist and vanished.
Silence fell.
Every soldier...
Every villager...
Even Kael...
Stared at Lyra.
She looked down at her glowing hands in disbelief.
"I... I didn't mean to..."
Kael slowly lowered his sword.
His silver eyes held something she hadn't seen before.
Not fear.
Not suspicion.
Wonder.
"The legends were true," he whispered.
Before anyone could speak again, the ground trembled.
A horn sounded from deep within the forest.
One long...
Haunting...
Call.
Kael's expression turned grim.
"That's not good."
Captain Rowan tightened his grip on his sword.
"What does that mean?"
Kael looked toward the dark tree line beyond the village.
"It means..."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"...their leader has arrived."
The haunting sound of the horn faded into the night, leaving behind an eerie silence.
No monsters moved.
No one spoke.
Even the flames consuming the cottages seemed quieter, as though the entire village were holding its breath. Then the forest began to change.A thick black mist rolled between the trees, swallowing the moonlight. The air grew bitterly cold, and frost spread across the ground despite the burning houses nearby.
Kael's grip tightened on the hilt of his sword.
"Everyone," he commanded, his voice calm but urgent. "Fall back."
Captain Rowan frowned."What is coming?"
Kael didn't take his eyes off the forest.
"Something far worse than the beasts."
The mist reached the edge of the village.
From within it came the slow, deliberate sound of footsteps.
One...Then another.
A tall figure emerged, wrapped in a cloak darker than the night itself. Its face was hidden behind a smooth silver mask engraved with strange symbols that shimmered under the Blood Moon.
The figure carried no weapon.
Yet every soldier instinctively took a step back.
The masked stranger stopped in the middle of the road, his gaze settling on Lyra.
"So..." he said, his voice smooth and chilling.
"The Moonborn has awakened at last."
Lyra felt a strange pressure in her chest, as though invisible hands were squeezing the air from her lungs.
"Who are you?" she managed to ask.
The stranger tilted his head slightly.
"I have been called many things."
"The Keeper of the Eclipse", "The Harbinger.","The Collector of Lost Souls."
"But names have little meaning."
His eyes, visible only through the narrow openings of the mask, glowed a deep violet.
"I have come for what belongs to my master."
Kael stepped in front of Lyra.
"She belongs to no one."
The masked man gave a soft laugh.
"Still protecting her, Prince Kael?"
Lyra glanced at Kael in surprise.
"You know him?"
"Oh, very well."
The stranger's gaze never left Kael.
"I watched him grow from a lonely child into the kingdom's greatest warrior."
Kael's jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
The masked man smiled beneath his mask.
"You've become stronger."
"And yet..."
His eyes shifted back to Lyra.
"You still cannot stop destiny."
Without warning, the mist behind him erupted.
Dozens of shadow beasts emerged, their glowing eyes piercing the darkness. They spread through the village, surrounding everyone in a tightening circle.
The villagers gasped.
Captain Rowan raised his sword.
"We're surrounded."
Kael took a slow breath.
"Stay behind me."
Lyra looked at the frightened faces around her—children clinging to their parents, wounded guards struggling to stand, and her grandmother clutching the doorway of the cottage.
She couldn't let any more people get hurt because of her.
She stepped out from behind Kael.
"No!" he snapped.
But Lyra continued walking until she stood a few paces in front of him.
"You want me," she called to the masked man.
His head lifted slightly.
"I do."
"Then let everyone else go."
Captain Rowan's eyes widened.
"Lyra, don't!"
Her grandmother's voice trembled.
"Child..."
The masked man studied her in silence before giving a slow, approving nod.
"Brave."
"So much like your mother."
Lyra's heart skipped.
"My... mother?"
Before she could ask another question, he raised one gloved hand.
The shadow beasts immediately stopped growling.
"I accept your offer."
Kael's expression darkened.
"You liar."
The masked man chuckled.
"I made no promise."
With a flick of his fingers, the beasts lunged forward.
The village erupted into chaos once more.
Kael surged ahead, his rune-blade blazing with silver light as it clashed against the first creature. Captain Rowan and the guards rushed to defend the villagers, while Elder Mara hurried children toward the safety of the stone meeting hall.
Lyra stood frozen for only a heartbeat.
Then she remembered the pendant around her neck.
It was glowing.
Not faintly this time, but brightly—its silver crescent pulsing in rhythm with the mark on her wrist.
A warm voice echoed inside her mind.
"Follow the light..."
Lyra gasped.
She looked down as the pendant projected a thin beam of moonlight toward the forest beyond the village, pointing to a path hidden between the trees.
Before she could understand what it meant, the masked stranger turned sharply toward the glowing beam.
For the first time since he arrived...
He looked alarmed.
"What?" he whispered.
"How is that possible?"
His calm demeanor vanished.
He pointed directly at Lyra.
"Take the Moonborn alive!"
The beasts roared in unison and charged.
The shadow beasts charged through the smoke, their snarls echoing across the village.
"Protect Lyra!" Captain Rowan shouted.
The village guards formed a defensive circle around her, their shields locked together. But the beasts crashed into them with incredible force. Two guards were thrown backward, their shields splintering as they hit the ground.
Kael darted into the fray.
His rune blade sliced through the darkness, leaving silver arcs of light in its wake. Every swing forced a beast back, but for each one he struck down, another seemed to emerge from the swirling mist.
"There are too many!" Rowan yelled.
Kael knew he was right.
This wasn't an attack meant to conquer Silverbrook.
It was an attack designed to overwhelm them.
The masked stranger remained at the edge of the village, watching the battle unfold with unsettling patience.
"You cannot protect her forever, Prince," he called.
"Every road she takes leads to me."
Kael ignored him.
A beast lunged toward Lyra from the rooftops.
Before it could reach her, Kael leaped into its path, catching its claws with his sword. The impact drove him to one knee, cracks spreading through the stone beneath his boots.
Lyra's eyes widened.
"Kael!"
"Run!" he shouted.
She hesitated.
"I won't leave you!"
"You'll doom us all if you stay!"
Those words hit her harder than she expected.
He wasn't trying to push her away.
He was trying to save everyone.
Her grandmother suddenly appeared beside her, breathing heavily.
"The pendant," Elder Mara said urgently. "It's showing you the way."
Lyra looked down.
The beam of moonlight still pointed toward the forest, brighter now than before.
"What does it mean?" she asked.
"I don't know," her grandmother admitted. "But your mother trusted this pendant with her life. If it has awakened now, then it is leading you to someone... or something."
A tremendous roar interrupted them.
The largest shadow beast Lyra had ever seen emerged from the mist. It towered over the cottages, its body wrapped in living shadows, two curved horns rising from its head.
The villagers screamed.
Even the other beasts moved aside as it approached.
The masked stranger smiled.
"Meet Gorthak," he said calmly. "The first of the Shadow Guardians."
Gorthak's crimson eyes locked onto Lyra.
Then it charged.
The ground shook beneath its massive footsteps.
Captain Rowan raised his sword.
"Stand your ground!"
The guards rushed forward, but Gorthak swept them aside with a single swing of its enormous arm. Shields shattered. Men were thrown across the square.
Kael sprinted toward the creature, pouring magic into his blade.
Silver runes blazed along its edge.
With a powerful leap, he struck Gorthak across the chest.
The sword connected......but barely left a mark.
Gorthak roared in fury and struck Kael with the back of its hand.
The prince was hurled through the air, crashing into the stone fountain at the center of the square. The fountain exploded into fragments.
"Kael!" Lyra cried.
He struggled to rise, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
For the first time, Lyra saw uncertainty in his silver eyes.
The beast was stronger than him.
Much stronger.
Gorthak turned its attention back to Lyra.
The pendant around her neck grew hot.
The mark on her wrist burned brighter than ever before.
The voice returned, clearer this time.
"Do not fear the light..."
"Become it."
Before Lyra could understand the words, the pendant floated free from her hand.
It hovered in front of her, spinning slowly.
A brilliant pillar of silver light erupted from it, reaching high into the heavens.
The clouds parted.
The Blood Moon disappeared behind a radiant full moon.
Moonlight poured over the village like a waterfall.
Every shadow beast froze.
Gorthak let out a deafening roar, shielding its eyes.
The masked stranger staggered backward.
"No..." he whispered in disbelief.
"It shouldn't awaken yet."
Kael looked at Lyra, astonishment written across his face.
The silver light surrounded her like a flowing cloak, lifting her gently off the ground.
Her eyes glowed with the same pale light as the moon above.
For a brief moment, she looked less like a frightened village girl... ...and more like a queen from an ancient legend.
Then, as suddenly as it had appeared, the light vanished.
Lyra collapsed into Kael's arms.
She had lost consciousness.
Kael caught her before she struck the ground.
The masked stranger recovered quickly.
"Retreat," he ordered the beasts.
"This battle is over."
One by one, the shadow creatures melted back into the forest, disappearing into the darkness.
Only Gorthak remained for a moment, glaring at the unconscious Lyra before turning away with a furious roar.
Within seconds, the village was silent.
Smoke drifted through the ruined streets.
Homes had been destroyed.
Several guards were injured.
But Silverbrook still stood.
Kael gently brushed a strand of hair away from Lyra's face.
"What are you?" he whispered.
Captain Rowan approached slowly.
"What happens now, Your Highness?"
Kael looked toward the forest, where the masked stranger had vanished.
"They'll return."
He then looked down at Lyra.
"And next time..."
"They won't come with an army."
"They'll come with a kingdom."
