A New Beginning

The alarm rang at exactly 5:30 a.m. Esther opened her eyes slowly, staring at the cracked ceiling above her. For a moment, she forgot the small apartment. The unpaid bills. The years of struggling. Then reality returned. Today was different. Today was her first official day at Cole Enterprises. She sat up slowly, her heart beating faster than usual. She had finally found a real job. Not another night at the bar. Not another place where people looked at her with pity or disrespect. She turned toward the small bed beside hers. Caleb and Callie were still asleep, their tiny chests rising and falling peacefully. A smile found its way onto her lips. Everything she did… She did it for them. Quietly, she got out of bed and walked into the tiny kitchen. She prepared breakfast, packed lunch for the twins, then ironed the only formal outfit she owned. A plain white blouse. A black skirt. Nothing expensive nor fashionable. But it was clean. She stood before the mirror, smoothing the wrinkles from her skirt. “You’ve survived worse than this,” she whispered. “So don’t be afraid.” An hour later, after dropping the twins off with her neighbor, Esther stood outside the towering Cole Enterprises building. Her stomach fluttered. Yesterday she had entered the building looking for hope. Today she entered as an employee. The receptionist smiled the moment she saw her. “Good morning, Ms. Williams.” Esther smiled back. “Good morning.” “The Human Resources department is expecting you.” “Thank you.” She stepped into the elevator. Just before the doors closed, someone walked in. Liam Carter. His sharp blue eyes briefly met hers. “Good morning, Ms. Williams.” “Good morning, Mr. Carter.” Silence settled between them. Liam pressed the button for the executive floor. “This company has high standards,” he said without looking at her. “I understand.” “Mr. Cole doesn’t tolerate carelessness.” “I don’t either.” That answer earned her a quick glance. “If you’re unsure about something,” Liam continued, “ask.” “I will.” “I’d rather ask questions than make costly mistakes.” For the first time… A faint smile appeared on Liam’s face. “That’s a good attitude.” The elevator doors opened. “Come with me.” The Human Resources department completed her paperwork within thirty minutes. She signed documents she carefully read twice. A confidentiality agreement. An employment contract. Company policies. When the HR manager finally handed her an employee identification card, Esther stared at it quietly. ESTHER WILLIAMS Executive Assistant Her fingers trembled. It was only a card. Yet somehow… It felt like the beginning of a different life. Liam led her through the executive floor. Employees greeted him respectfully. Some smiled politely at Esther. Others openly stared. “Isn’t she the new assistant?” “I heard she doesn’t even have corporate experience.” “Then how did she get hired?” “I don’t know…” Their whispers followed her. She lowered her eyes. Maybe they were right. Maybe she didn’t belong here. Liam suddenly stopped walking. Without turning around, he spoke. “If you spend your time listening to gossip…” “…you’ll never hear opportunity knocking.” Esther blinked. Had he noticed? She smiled faintly. “I’ll remember that.” “Good.” He continued walking. When they reached Adrian’s office, Liam knocked once. “Come in.” Adrian looked up from his laptop. “Good morning, Ms. Williams.” “Good morning, sir.” “I trust HR has finished?” “Yes, sir.” Adrian nodded. “Then let’s begin.” He handed her a thick folder. “I have a board meeting in forty minutes.” “I need these files arranged according to priority.” Esther accepted the folder. “Yes, sir.” She returned to the small desk outside his office. The documents were overwhelming. Financial reports. Meeting schedules. Investment proposals. She inhaled slowly. One page at a time. One task at a time. Nearly twenty minutes later, she frowned. Something wasn’t right. One file was labeled as an investment proposal. But the documents inside were legal contracts. She checked another folder. The investment report was there instead. “They’ve been switched…” She looked toward Adrian’s office. Should she say something? What if she was wrong? What if she embarrassed herself on her very first day? She closed her eyes and whispered to herself. If she stayed quiet and the meeting went badly… That would be worse. She knocked gently. “Come in.” Esther stepped inside. “I’m sorry to interrupt, sir.” Adrian looked up. “What is it?” “I think… these files were placed in the wrong folders.” He raised an eyebrow. “You think?” “Yes.” She walked over and exchanged documents. “I compared the reference numbers.” “They don’t match the labels.” For a brief moment… Silence filled the office. Adrian opened the corrected file. His eyes scanned the pages. Then he looked at Liam. “They were switched.” Liam checked them himself. A few seconds later, he nodded. “She’s right.” Adrian closed the folder. A faint smile appeared on his face. “Good catch.” Relief washed over Esther. “I wasn’t sure if I should say anything.” “You should always speak when you’re protecting the company’s interests.” She nodded. “Alright.” As she turned to leave, Adrian stopped her. “Ms. Williams.” She faced him again. “Yes, sir?” “I hired you because I believed you had good judgment.” He paused. “This morning, you proved I made the right decision.” Esther smiled softly. She quietly returned to her desk and continued arranging the remaining files. Outside the office, employees still whispered among themselves, surprised that the CEO had praised a newcomer on her very first day. Liam glanced toward Adrian before quietly leaving the office to resume his duties. Adrian remained seated behind his desk, looking through the meeting agenda for the afternoon. He stopped for a brief moment, his gaze drifting toward the glass wall where Esther worked quietly at her desk. She looked completely focused, carefully checking every document before placing it in order. A faint smile crossed Adrian’s face. “She’s observant,” he murmured. Then he returned to his work as if nothing had happened. Esther had no idea that her first day had already earned the respect of the most powerful man in the building. She also had no idea… That accepting this job was the first step toward changing her life forever.
