Face to Face

The conference room buzzed with restrained anticipation. Executives exchanged low voices while legal advisers arranged contracts into neat stacks. Contracts slid across the polished table. Coffee cups were pushed aside as laptops flickered to life. Today’s meeting would determine whether Cole Enterprises and Grant Holdings moved forward with a partnership worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Outside the room, Esther stood frozen, clutching a stack of neatly arranged files. Sweat dampened her palms until the edges of the folders threatened to slip through her fingers. Her heartbeat thudded against her ribs, loud enough that she was certain everyone would hear it. She swallowed hard. Don’t mess this up. It’s just another assignment. Her own thoughts laughed at her. No… it’s not. One mistake in there, and every eye will be on you. You’ll prove everyone whispering outside was right. Her pulse hammered against her ribs. She drew in a slow breath. You’ve survived worse than a boardroom. The door opened. Liam stepped aside. “Mr. Cole is ready.” Esther straightened her shoulders and followed him inside. The conversations faded. Every face turned toward the entrance. Adrian rose from his chair. “Good morning, everyone.” A chorus of greetings answered him. Before taking his seat, Adrian gestured toward Esther. “Before we begin, I’d like to introduce the newest member of my executive team.” Esther felt dozens of eyes settle on her. “This is Ms. Esther Williams, my executive assistant. She’ll be assisting throughout today’s meeting.” She offered a polite nod. “Good morning.” Most returned the greeting. A few simply looked her over before returning to their documents. She ignored them. This wasn’t about proving herself to strangers. It was about proving herself to herself. The conference room door opened again. “Apologies for the delay.” The deep voice struck her like lightning. Her fingers tightened around the folder. No…It couldn’t be. She turned and the world stopped. Peter. Her brain scrambled to make sense of what her eyes were seeing. No… This can’t be happening. The room blurred around her as memories crashed into her without warning. The air caught in her lungs. For one terrifying second, she forgot where she was. Three years dissolved into nothing. The courtroom. His signature across the divorce papers. The sleepless nights. The tears she had hidden from her children. Every wound she had fought so hard to bury ripped open at once. A sharp pain pierced her chest. Across the room, Peter looked up. Peter’s grip loosened. The leather folder slid from his fingers and struck the table with a dull thud. For the first time in years… Peter Grant forgot how to breathe. Esther. He had imagined this moment a hundred different ways. None of them looked like this. She wasn’t crying. She wasn’t begging. She wasn’t broken. She stood tall in a crisp white blouse and black skirt, her chin lifted with quiet confidence. When had she changed? No… The better question was… When had he stopped knowing her? “Mr. Grant?” Adrian’s voice cut through the silence. Peter blinked. Everyone was looking at him. He cleared his throat. “My apologies.” He took his seat, forcing his expression back under control. Inside, however… Nothing was under control. Why is she here? Why is she working for Adrian? Why didn’t anyone tell me? Esther lowered her gaze to the files in her hands. She walked around the table, placing documents before each executive. When she reached Peter, every muscle in her body tensed. She placed the contract in front of him with steady hands. “Your copy, Mr. Grant.” Not Peter. Not her husband. Just… Mr. Grant. The words landed harder than he expected. Once… She had whispered his name with love. Now… He was just another executive. His fingers twitched. He wanted to stop her. To ask a thousand questions. Instead… He watched her walk away. The meeting began. Adrian outlined the proposal while lawyers discussed clauses and financial projections. Esther remained beside the screen, taking notes and distributing revised documents whenever they were requested. She focused on every word except Peter’s voice. Still… She could feel his eyes. It crawled across her skin. Ignore him. He’s nothing to you now. Then a senior investor frowned. “Mr. Cole, the figures on page twenty-six don’t match the projected liabilities.” A murmur spread around the table. Several executives flipped through their files. Confusion filled the room. Adrian frowned. Before anyone spoke again, Esther’s eyes scanned the documents. Her heart raced. Wait… She found it. The revised financial appendix had been placed behind the wrong section. She stepped forward. “Sir…” Every head turned toward her. “If the appendix is moved behind page twenty-four, the figures match the corrected projections.” Silence. The company’s legal adviser checked first. Then the finance director. Finally… Adrian looked up. “She’s right.” The room fell completely still. The investor slowly closed his file. “Good eye.” Adrian looked at Esther. “Thank you, Ms. Williams.” Relief flooded her chest. She nodded once and quietly returned to her place. Across the table… Peter couldn’t stop staring. Three years ago… She had depended on him for everything. Now she stood in a room full of powerful executives, earning their respect without asking anyone to save her. Something twisted painfully inside him. When did I stop seeing the woman she was becoming? Or… was I too blind to see her at all? The meeting ended an hour later. Chairs scraped softly across the floor as everyone prepared to leave. Esther gathered the signed contracts into a neat stack. She turned toward the door. “Esther.” Peter’s voice is firm and low. A thousand apologies crowded his throat. A thousand questions. But before he could speak “Ms. Williams.” Adrian’s voice cut cleanly through the silence. Esther didn’t hesitate. “Excuse me, Mr. Grant.” She walked away. Peter remained rooted to the spot, watching the woman who had once loved him choose someone else’s call over his. For the first time in three years… He understood what it meant to be left behind.
