Papers and poison

1017 Words
Her hands trembled so badly that the paper almost slipped from her hands. Esther forced herself to pay attention, her eyes reading across the first line. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. Esther’s chest pounded in her ears. Her chest tightened, and her breath caught. Divorce? Is he divorcing me? No… this can’t be real. Not after everything she has done. Not after all the love she gave him. Not after she carried his children in her body. Her tears spilled instantly, wetting the page. She blinked hard, hoping the words would blur away into something else. But they weren't. Peter stood tall at the end of her bed, arms folded neatly, his face carved from stone. Standing beside him, the other woman clung shamelessly to his arm, her smug smile cutting deeper than any blade. As Esther tried lifting her eyes, her lips began trembling as she spoke. “Peter… Why? Why would you do this to me?” His jaw flexed, but his eyes held no warmth. “Because this marriage is over. And you know it.” Her mind screamed. Over? How can he say that when we have just brought two children into this world? How can he say that after I gave him years of my life, my heart, my loyalty? Is it over today? She crumpled the papers against her chest as if doing that could stop her world from collapsing. Her voice cracked. “Do you remember our vows? Do you remember the promises you made to me, Peter? For better or worse…was that all a lie?” Maria stood beside him and chuckled, Brushing her long manicured nails against his collar. “Oh, poor little thing, still clinging to empty words. Honestly, it’s pitiful.” Pitiful? Her mind raced with tension. The insult hit Esther like a physical blow. Her throat tightened, and rage bubbled up, but her body was too weak to show it. “If I had strength, I would throw this paper at her ugly face. I would scream. But look at me, I can’t even stand. I’m trapped in this bed while she parades around like she owns my life,” Esther whispered to herself. Peter’s gaze didn’t waver. “Sign them, Esther. The sooner you do, the easier this will be.” Her voice cracked into a sob. “Easier? For who? For you? For her?” She glared at the woman clinging to him. “You humiliate me in the very place I gave birth to your children, and you dare to talk about easy?” The monitor beside her beeped faster as her chest heaved with pain. Peter’s expression flickered with impatience. “This doesn’t have to be dramatic. It’s just a signature. Accept it.” Her inner voice screamed louder than her words. Just a signature? He thinks my life, my marriage, and my dignity are just a line of ink on paper. He doesn’t see me anymore. He doesn’t see the woman who built him up, who prayed for him, who sacrificed everything. To him, I’m disposable. Her tears blurred the page again. She whispered, “No. I won’t sign. You can’t make me.” Peter leaned forward, his voice low and cutting. “You will, Esther. Sooner or later, you will.” Then he straightened, smoothed his suit jacket, and turned to leave. The woman followed, her heels clicking like tiny daggers against the hospital floor. At the door, Peter paused and glanced back once. “The lawyer will be in touch.” And then, they were gone. The silence that followed was deafening. Esther’s sobs filled the room as she curled into herself, clutching the papers like they were poison she couldn’t throw away. How could he do this to me? How could he stand there with her, so calm, so sure, while I fall apart? How could he end us like this, as if I never mattered? Her gaze drifted to the crib where her twins lay, their tiny bodies stirring softly, their breaths fragile. Her heart squeezed. “I’ll be strong for you,” she whispered hoarsely. “I’ll find a way. I promise.” She looked back at the papers through her tears, her hands trembling as she flipped through the pages. Each line was sharp and cruel, legal jargon that stripped her life down to numbers and signatures. Then her eyes froze. Halfway through the stack, a clause stood out in bold letters. Her pulse quickened as she read, the words burning into her. “All rights to shared assets, properties, and financial support are hereby relinquished by Esther Grant upon signing.” Her breath caught. She read it again, her eyes wide. No alimony. No share of his wealth. Nothing. Her vision swam. He’s not just divorcing me. He’s throwing me out with nothing. No home. No money. No safety for the babies or me. Her fingers curled tighter around the page, crumpling the edges. Her tears fell harder, soaking the ink until the words blurred. “No…” she whispered to herself, her body trembling violently. “He can’t do this. He can’t strip me of everything. Not after all I gave him. Not after everything I sacrificed.” The monitor screeched at her rising heartbeat, but she couldn’t calm down. Her whole body shook as she realized the truth. “He wants me destroyed. He wants me crawling in the dirt with nothing. He wants to erase me…not just from his life, but from the world itself!” Her mind screamed at her. The papers slipped from her hands onto the sheets, the bold words glaring up at her like a cruel curse. Her inner voice whispered fiercely, through the tears and terror: No matter what it takes, I will survive this. I will not let him destroy me. But her heart screamed a louder truth. She had no idea how. And as the room swirled around her, and the cries of her newborns echoed softly in the background, Esther realized she had just stepped into the darkest chapter of her life.
