The SUV didn’t move right away. I sat frozen in the driver’s seat, my fingers still clamped around the steering wheel. Headlights glared through the drizzle, two orbs cutting into my rearview mirror like watchful eyes. My breath fogged the glass as I waited.
One long minute then two. Finally, the SUV rolled forward, slow and unhurried, before turning the corner and disappearing into the dark but I knew better. Whoever was inside hadn’t just been passing by. They’d been watching.
