Chapter 2: Trouble is that you?

1211 Words
Vivienne's POV I moved closer to him slowly, the dim light casting eerie shadows across the room. “Hey,” I called out in a very low voice, barely audible above the soft hum of the music. “If you can hear me, just get up. This isn't the best time to act,” I urged, my voice trembling with fear. “I'm very sure you can hear me. I have to go home. Get up,” I said, my tone growing impatient. Still, I didn't get any response from him. With a heavy sigh, I had no choice but to bend down and turn his head, the scent of his cologne mingling with the metallic tang of blood. “Oh my God!” I gasped, using both hands to cover my mouth. The sight of blood sent a shiver down my spine, and tears welled up in my eyes. “Blood? I'm in trouble,” I muttered to myself, pacing around him in a futile attempt to calm my racing thoughts. “It wouldn't make sense if I left him here like this, but I had to. I pushed him, and that was more than enough for me to go to jail.” Guilt gnawed at my insides as I weighed my options. “He's not even breathing,” I whispered, my voice barely above a whisper as I checked his pulse again, my heart pounding in my chest. I needed to leave here. I couldn't afford someone meeting me here; that would be trouble. And that's not what I can afford now. I quickly moved the table and chair to their opposite ways, trying to make it look like an accident. The dim light cast eerie shadows towards me, adding to the sense of unease. With tears in my eyes, I walked slowly out of the room and closed the door behind me, the sound echoing in the empty hallway. I went directly to the accountant and collected my pay for the day, the meager amount a stark reminder of the struggles ahead. Just as I was about to turn, a strange hand grabbed me from the back, and without checking who it was, I slapped the person on the chest, my heart still racing from the earlier events. He immediately released his grip on my waist, and I continued walking towards the door, my mind still trying to relax from the encounter. As I walked down the road, I kept thinking of him. Has someone rescued him? Will he even be found early? Suddenly, a scary thought crossed my mind: what if he dies, and they trace it to me? Will I go to prison for murder? My phone rang out loudly, interrupting me from my thoughts. I tapped at the screen, and I froze on seeing the caller ID, my hand trembling slightly. “Oh my God, I'm in trouble, what have I done to myself? Why is Kathy calling me?” At this point, my heart was beating like it was going to break out of my chest. After several vibrations and ringing, I finally summoned the courage to pick up the call, my voice barely above a whisper as I listened to the urgent words on the other end. “Hey you, where the f×ck did you put your phone?” She shouted through the phone, immediately I picked the call. “I…” I tried to say, but my words kept failing me out of fear. “Save me your long excuses; the old lady said your sister has been rushed to the hospital.” “When? Why?” I asked, but she had ended the call, leaving me with more questions than answers. I turned back and ran towards the bus station; one part of me was happy it wasn't because of the stranger, and another part of me was petrified for my sister. I already knew the hospital, as this wasn't the first time. I rushed there as quickly as I could; it took a lot of consideration, but I had no choice but to take out money for the cab, as I couldn't get a bus faster. By the time I got to the hospital, she was already stabilized and resting, the rhythmic beeping of the machines a comforting sound amidst the chaos that made me feel at ease. I gently sat by her side, thinking of how long we have to continue like this. I'm getting too tired of this, and the sad part is that there is no help coming from anywhere. I continued thinking about the events of the day until I finally fell asleep, the soft hum of the machines lulling me into a restless slumber. The next time I opened my eyes, it was 7 am the next morning, the pale light filtering in through the window casting a soft glow on the room. I jumped up from the chair I was sitting in and hurried towards the door, my mind already racing with thoughts of the interview ahead. I didn't bother to check on my sister, as the note beside her bed said she should not be disturbed, my focus solely on the place I had to be. Finally getting a good job might even help me track my sister's health, a glimmer of hope amidst the uncertainty which I can't afford to lose. The interview was a very fast one; good for me, they weren't too concerned about the looks as I was putting on the shirt from yesterday. I went home to pick some things, and on my way back to the hospital, I saw an accident on the road which brought back the event between me and the guest yesterday. “Should I ask Kathy about it? Did he die?” I thought as I walked through the wide hospital door. As I walked through the wide hospital door, I winced in pain as I accidentally hit my right foot on a brick in the hallway. I staggered to a nearby chair and sat down, tears slowly streaming down my cheeks as I tried to process everything that had happened, the weight of it all bearing down on me. Suddenly, someone stopped in front of me and stretched out a handkerchief towards me, a gesture of kindness is the least of what I'm interested in right now. “Thank you, but I will pass,” I said. I didn't bother to look up, the tears blurring my vision as I gently dabbed at my eyes with my hands. “And what if I insist?” The voice replied, the tone gentle yet persistent, a faint hint of concern underlying the words. “I don't care, go with it,” I said, my voice trembling slightly as I tried to regain control of my emotions, wearing my shoe back so I can leave the place. “Go? If I go, how do we want to settle what happened yesterday?” The voice replied. “And what do you mean by what happened, yes.....” I raised my head up, my eyes widen in surprise as I finally took in the person standing in front of me. “This is trouble….”
