As soon as Zaire heard those words, his heart which had been leaking for joy, suddenly settled down.
Get married? And to someone he barely knew?
He hesitated, looking from the chairman to Paul, who still kept an impassive expression.
He realized that Zaire was hesitating because of the marriage condition, and was looking forward to the decision the boy was going to make.
The chairman though, had a slight smile on his face, as he watched Zaire hesitate.
Zaire sighed, knowing there had to be a catch, when it comes to something like this.
Of course, he can't just wake up and inherit an estate worth trillions of dollars without an impossible condition being attached to it.
But was it really impossible?
"Do I really have to get married to a strange woman in order to inherit the estate?" He looked at the Chairman squarely as he spoke those words, eagerly awaiting their response.
The chairman smiled and leaned back in his chair
"Don't be worried, Zaire" He chuckled slightly "I can see you're hesitating because of that small fact"
"Small? It's not a small fact, actually" Zaire argued "you're asking me to spend the rest of my life with someone I barely know. This is a commitment I don't even know if I would be able to do"
"Don't worry, you'll be able to commit fully" The chairman laughed fully now, looking at Paul "The wealth in your hands will keep you on track"
Zaire sighed in frustration, rubbing his temple with his palms and the chairman, seeing how frustrated he was, decided to quit playing with him and speak on a more serious note.
"Forgive the casual way I spoke earlier" He cleared his throat and began "But you're right. Getting married to a person you barely know is not a small matter"
Zaire nodded, glad he and the chairman were on the same page
"But I have also considered that fact before I placed it in the will" The chairman said in a reasurring and calm voice "Marriage within the wealthy are always meticulously arranged like this, mostly to keep wealth in both families"
Zaire's eyes were narrowed as he listened to the chairman intently.
"So when I say you have to get married to the daughter of the Whitmore family, I know what I'm doing" The chairman coughed and motioned to Paul, who nodded and began to speak sharply
"The Lady Elena Whitmore is the sole heir of the Whitmore Empire. She is said to be extremely kind, smart and gracious in all ways and a perfect match for the son of an empire like the Ludovic Empire...".
Zaire held up his hand in surrender but it made Paul stop and frown at him.
Did he just tell him to be silent?
But Zaire had had enough and only held his hands up in surrender. He knew that there was no need to hear about the girl for him to be persuaded.
He already knew that he was going to do it. And since he was he was doing it, there was only one question in his mind and he needed to know the answer to that for now.
"That's all fine and good" He spoke clearly, looking at both the chairman and the butler, his gaze unwavering "But does the lady Elena Whitmore wants to get married to me?"
The question was left hanging and the chairman and butler looked at each other before Chairman Robert replied in a reasurring tone.
"Do not worry, Zaire" His eyes twinkled with amusement as he stared into Zaire's grey ones "She will want to get married to you"
Zaire sighed.
'This is just great' he thought, gritting his teeth " In exchange of this sudden wealth, I have to be forced into a marriage with a woman who's also forced as well'
But it was worth it.
Zaire closed his eyes as he reassured himself, that it was worth getting out of poverty
His last experience with love had taught him a bitter lesson and he does not know if he's ready for another relationship like that.
But he was going to do it. If that was his ticket to getting the Ludovic Empire.
"Fine, I agree. I'll marry the daughter of the Whitmore family"
His determined voice rang out in the room and the chairman smiled joyfully.
He knew that Zaire was smart and that he would eventually agree.
Paul looked impassive as ever.
He shook his head slightly at Zaire accepting the arrangements. If he was going to accept, why didn't he just do so earlier?
He saw the Chairman nod slowly at him, and he swiftly turned the documents in his hands to the last page, setting it before Zaire.
"Sign here, please" His usual gruff voice was softer now, and he nodded slowly to Zaire, indicating on the lined dot where he should sign.
Zaire picked up the pen, hesitating only a second before he signed on the dotted line.
Paul smiled finally, and he removed the papers in front of Zaire and placed a black envelope in front of him.
Zaire carefully took the envelope and opened it. Inside the envelope was a sleek black card, looking very luxurious.
Zaire's eyes widened and Paul smiled in satisfaction as he started speaking.
"That card was crafted specially for you, Master Zaire"
Zaire looked up at the mention of his name with the title. Paul pretended he did not notice and continued,
"The card has no spending limit and can only be used by you"
"No spending limit?! Really?" Zaire's voice rang out joyfully. He could not contain his gladness "Like how many millions are we talking about?"
"Billions, you mean"
Zaire's eyes widened all the more at this news.
'My God' He thought gleefully 'This was worth getting married to a woman I barely know. I'm never going to misuse this opportunity'
These happy thoughts filled his head as he descended to the last floor, all alone in a elevator
The chairman had bid him goodbye a few minutes after the card was handed to him. It was like a command for him to go and spend his money
He was grateful he was alone in the elevator, because he was leaping for joy and punching the air with exhilaration, rejoicing at his sudden wealth.
The elevator dinged to show he had gotten to the last floor and he stepped out, still looking satisfactorily at the black card, when suddenly, a hand grabbed him and held him down.
"There he is!" An angry voice yelled " You faggot, how dare you run away from us? Today is surely the day your life will end."
Zaire glanced up at the angry face of the burly man, staring down at him. And using his free hand, he carefully placed the black card in his pocket.
"Oh my God, this makes me sick!" Another voice uttered with pure disgust and Zaire looked up in time to see the beautiful woman whose coffee he had spilled , approaching them.
She had changed into another dress, a yellow evening gown, and looked very ravishing. She walked towards where the guards were standing with Zaire, giving them a menacing look.
"So you can't keep just one faggot in control, right?!" She screeched at the guards, who bowed politely.
"And you..." She turned on Zaire, her eyes dripping with hatred and her voice venomous "You're just a rogue. How dare you harass me and refuse to apologize? I'll give you one last chance to apologize or else I'm turning you over to the police."
She pointed towards the entrance and Zaire could see perfectly, the police cars that were parked outside
He rolled his eyes and tried to pull his arm free from the hold which the security guards kept on him but they wouldn't budge.
Instead, they tightened the hold and made Zaire cry out in pain
"Enough!" A powerful voice thundered " what's the meaning of this?!"
Everyone turned towards the direction of the voice and in an instant, they bowed their heads in respect at the sight of the person.
It was Chairman Robert Ludovic!
