CHAPTER ONE Zaire Langdon wiped the sweat off his brows with the sleeve of his shirt. His gaze was fixed and his hands worked in precise motion. He had been working for four hours since his classes ended for the day and he still has three more jobs to go to before he calls it a day. He punched in numbers on the machine in front of him accurately, noting down every number as he hurriedly rang the order of the customer in front of him It was a middle aged woman. She was short and stout, with a permanent scowl on her face, and she thinks Zaire is incompetent. She had loudly expressed this fact a few minutes ago as she fought to be in front of the line, causing the annoyance of other customers who were currently looking at her in disdain "Hurry up, will you?! I haven't got all day!" She exclaimed in an annoying voice "How hard can it be to do your job?!" Zaire didn't reply. His gaze flickered over to the woman for a second, before he continued with what he was doing, unbothered He had encountered many customers like her when working his multiple jobs. And he knew the best way to deal with them was to ignore them. Silence was the best answer for them Infact, he didn't really hear her. His mind was on his next job which he had to be in the next twenty minutes but from the look of the line of customers he had to attend to before his shift ends, it seems like that won't be possible. Zaire sighed, closing his eyes in anguish for a brief second, wondering if he was going to be able to make it But he had to make it possible. That job was by far the most lucrative one he had, paying $180 an hour He had worked there for a month already and today was payday. If he gets his paycheck today, he'd have enough money to get Vanessa everything she wishes for her birthday and also pay off a bit of his students loans. Her birthday was today and although Zaire knew he should have gotten the gift before hand, he hoped he could make it up to her tonight by gifting her what she expressly demanded. Vanessa had demanded custom made designer shoes. "You have to get me these shoes, Zaire" Vanessa had flippantly thrown in his face three months ago. Her beautiful grey eyes shone with greed "If you don't get me those shoes, then you don't deserve me. I won't be with someone who plays with my feelings. Get me those shoes or we're done!" The problem was, this shoes were hand crafted by a very famous shoe designer in Emerald City. Not everyone gets to have their order done by him and it's mostly on first come, first serve. And the price was very lucrative, both for the workmanship and the shoe itself but Zaire didn't mind. He had managed to place in an order three month in advance and today he was going to complete the payment Vanessa was a very materialistic and extravagant person and this was not the first time she had demanded such from him. Her family had once been very wealthy but suddenly went bankrupt, making them lose all of their wealth. Vanessa refused to let go of the lifestyle she grew up with and demanded that Zaire obeyed her every wishes or else she will leave him. And that was the last thing he wanted. He quickly finished ringing up the short woman's order and she walked away with an "hmph" , pissed that Zaire had completely ignored her. Zaire quickly finished ringing up the orders of the other customers, his eyes on the huge wall clock in the mall all the time He had to be out of here in 20minutes Thankfully, the other customers were not like the short woman's and he rang their orders easily. Some of them were very grateful and even gave him tips Zaire was grateful for these tips and resolved to save every penny like he always does. "Hey bro, I'm off. " He said, turning to his colleague and friend at work, Cameron, swiftly taking off his mall cap and jacket before running into the locker room. Cameron watched him.go and shook his head. "Another job? Again?" Cameron asked as soon as Zaire appeared from the locker room, in his casual clothes. He had changed into his clothes in not less than 5mins. How had he managed that? "Yes, it's my payday today and I'll finally be able to get Vanessa those shoes she wants" Zaire was so excited as he spoke that Cameron rolled his eyes "Really, Zaire?" He frowned as he spoke. "Why would you do that? Those shoes are damn expensive and you're literally in debt. Why do you let her use you so much?" "I love her bro" Zaire said as he fixed Cameron a level glare. He was not going to have Cameron insult his girlfriend Cameron was not going to back down too Zaire was his colleague and best friend. He was a brilliant, superb guy and Cameron was angry that Vanessa was able to use him that way especially when it was obvious that she did not really love him Everyone knew Vanessa was only using Zaire. Everyone, except Zaire himself. He was so blind to her faults. These thoughts made Cameron so annoyed that he sneered at Zaire "Oh yeah, but does she love you? Because it seems to me like she's out for your life. She's trying to kill you with her demands man" Zaire didn't answer him and instead walked out. He had a very stubborn and determined look in his eyes and Cameron sighed because he recognized that look Zaire always did what was on his mind without caring what others thought about him He gave wholeheartedly as well as trusted wholeheartedly. He was literally a pushover when it came to love When Zaire got to the restaurant, he saw the manager standing outside "Why are you just coming?" The man look annoyed, his eyes looking very small behind his huge glasses "I'm sorry si.."Zaire started saying but the man interrupted him "Oh shut up. If we weren't short of staff tonight, I'd just fire you. Go get changed!" He yelled rudely and Zaire obeyed immediately, heading to the locker room and changing into the restaurant's uniform It was an exquisite black long sleeve shirt and trousers with a golden bow tie He splashed water on his face to clear his tired head and finally headed out to the main room to take orders "Hey you faggot!" He heard the manager whisper fiercely at his side "Don't you see the couple walking in? Go greet them before they get angry. If my customers leave, I'll fire you!" "Yes sir" Zaire bowed and hurried to greet the stunning couple who just walked in but as he approached them, he stopped dead "V.. Vanessa?" Vanessa had been laughing and whispering something into the ear of the man whose arm she was clinging to but when she heard her name, she turned to stare at Zaire who was looking at her in astonishment, frozen momentarily She sneered and looked at Zaire in his waiter uniform "Oh my gosh, so embarrassing" she laughed and the guy with her also sneered "I can't believe you work as a waiter here. You're such a disgrace!" Zaire's fists clenched at her words and at the way she was clinging to the other man. He recognized the guy. Kace Thompson. They were coursemates. He was also a bully and had made life hell for Zaire on more than one occasion. Zaire could not believe Vanessa could betray him with someone he so obviously despised "Vanessa, how could you do this to me?!" Zaire's eyes reddened and his jaw clenched as he glared at Vanessa "After all I've done for you?" "Oh please, what have you ever done for me?" Vanessa said cruelly, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder " you're just a poor church rat, who's completely obsessed with me. I went out with you because you were a pushover. How dare you think you could be anything better?" "What?" "Listen up, Faggot" Kace sneered "you're just a lowlife. You don't deserve Vanessa. She deserves all the riches she can ever get and unfortunately for you, you can't give her that even if you work all the jobs in this city" He laughed loudly and Vanessa followed suit. She regarded Zaire with disdain. How dare he think they'd be anything more than just a servant and boss relationship? He was so poor and could not even satisfy a classy girl like her whereas Kace was the youngest son of a business tycoon and his family's business was one of the biggest in the city. She was better off with him than this trash "Just get out of here and get our orders" she loudly ordered "is this how service is in this restaurant? I want to speak to your manager. How do you train your employees?" "Shut up, Vanessa. You're nothing but a cheat and a tr..." The words had barely left Zaire's mouth when Vanessa grabbed a glass of water from a passing waiter and threw it at his face in one swift motion before giving him a resounding slap "How dare you talk back to me, you dirty lowlife?!" She screeched at him in a loud voice, causing the guests at the restaurant to look up at the commotion Some even took out their cell phones and started recording as the manager ran forward and yelled at Zaire. "What's going on here?! How dare you disrupt my business?!"
