Elara Pov
Suddenly, I snapped back to reality when I heard Liam's voice. It was only then that I realized I was in the church and getting married to Alexander. My face turned red with embarrassment. When I glanced at the people around us, their faces showed shock and confusion. Then, I looked at Alexander, his thick eyebrows were almost in a single line from frowning so much. I could feel that he was just holding back his anger and wanted to crush me and then drag me out of the church and throw me onto the street.
I secretly took a deep breath and forced an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hit you, Alexander. There was a mosquito on your cheek, and I just wanted to kill it. I didn't mean to slap your cheek that hard," I apologized to him under my nose. Honestly, I didn't really regret slapping him. That slap serves him right.
No one among the people around us spoke. It seemed like they didn't believe the excuse I gave. The tension inside the church suddenly grew.
"Oh, well. I'm sorry to all of you. It was true that there are lots of mosquitoes that get into this church, especially at this time." The priest broke the tension around us. I don't know if what he said was true or if he just said it to save my face. But I secretly thanked him because both Alexander's and my mother, as well as our godparents, suddenly smiled. It seemed they believed what the priest said.
"You did well, Elara. We don't know if that mosquito is a carrier of dengue or not. My son is lucky to have an alert wife like you," Alexander's mother said to me with a smile.
"Elara is always like that. She's very alert and careful," Liam said with a smile, then secretly winked at me.
I just laughed softly, but when I looked at Alexander's face again, the smile on my lips immediately disappeared. His face was dark, and it was obvious that he didn't believe what my friend had said. Well, I didn't care whether he believed it or not. I even raised an eyebrow at him, which seemed to annoy him even more.
"I will never forget this moment, Elara. You will pay for what you did," Alexander whispered firmly in my ear. His tone was threatening. But I didn't feel any fear of him. My anger was stronger because of what he did to me. The damage he caused me was too great, and the slap I gave him wasn't enough to match that damage.
"It's good if you won't forget this moment, Alexander. So that you'll have something to remember that I did to you whenever you think of me," I replied to him with a smile but with emphasis on every word. He was about to respond, but he didn't continue because his mother approached us, followed by my mother, to congratulate us.
"I'm happy for you, son, and Elara. Congratulations to both of you. I hope you will give me a grandchild next year," his mother happily said to us. She first hugged Alexander while my mother hugged me too.
"Always take care, Elara. If you have any problems, just call me," my mom said to me tearfully after hugging me. "I can't go to the reception anymore because I need to go to the airport with your Dad."
I nodded at her and smiled slightly. "Thanks, 'Ma. I will never forget what you said." My mother returned to her usual caring self, so even though this marriage is against my will, I am still happy because the big wall that stood between us has been broken down. "Take care, Mom. Don't forget to always update me on Dad's condition."
My mom just nodded and then hugged me again.
"Let's go straight to the hotel where I booked a special room for the small celebration of my child's wedding," I heard Alexander's mother say to our wedding sponsors and also to the priest.
"I would like to attend the reception, but I can't because I have another mass scheduled after this wedding," the priest replied to Alexander's mother.
"I'm so sad to hear that, Father. I will invite you for lunch next time if you have time," my mother-in-law replied with a smile, which the priest answered with a nod.
After talking to the priest, my mother-in-law walked out of the church with our godparents. My mom also left the church to prepare for their departure to America. Meanwhile, when I looked at Alexander's face, I caught him giving me a sharp and threatening look before he left and walked out of the church ahead of me. His steps were quick as if I had a contagious disease that he wanted to get away from me immediately.
"Oh dear, Beshy. It seems like your husband wants to devour you whole," Liam remarked when he approached me. "But in fairness, Alexander looks even more handsome to me now than before," he added with a hint of excitement.
"Handsome? I think he aged twenty years more compared to the last time I saw him. His face looks too mature," I quickly contradicted what my best friend said. But the truth is, I agreed with what Liam said. Alexander indeed became more handsome now than before. His body grew bigger and broader. Maybe he learned how to lift barbells or go to the gym, which improved his physique. Alexander's serious face seemed to add even more to his charisma.
"Really? You don't find your husband handsome?" Liam's eyes widened as he looked at me in disbelief. "Maybe you're just saying that because you hate him. Admit it, he's really handsome now than before."
"Can you please stop insisting on your opinion of him to me? I don't care if you find him handsome, but I don't. Period!" I said to him with a frown.
"Okay fine. Don't get high blood pressure or you might collapse here. Instead of attending your happy reception, I might end up going to your wake," Liam said exaggeratedly. "But fate really jokes around with the two of you, Beshy. Imagine, the person you hate actually now your husband. Didn't you know that your mom is friends with Alexander's mom?"
I took a deep sigh before shaking my head firmly. When the scandal happened, my parents didn't even bother to find out who the guy was that embarrassed me and who his parents were. They just scolded me endlessly.
"I will just think that fate brought us together so I could take revenge for the humiliation he caused me before."
"What about your agreement with his mother that you would give her a grandchild? Are you no longer planning to get pregnant by your husband right after your wedding so that once you give birth, you can divorce him?"
I suddenly fell silent when I heard what my friend said. I think I won't be able to fulfill the last thing Liam mentioned. From Alexander's look, he seemed that he wanted to bury me where I stood; I couldn't be intimate with him. I think I couldn't bear to be intimate with him when every time I saw him, I would only remember the faces of my schoolmates who mocked, insulted, and laughed at me back then.
