Elara Pov
When I got home to Alexander's house, I avoided him. Even though sometimes it seemed like he was trying to talk to me, I would immediately leave. When he's at home, I suddenly leave just like now. It seems he has no plans to leave the house, so I decided that I would be the one to leave.
I thought of visiting my mother-in-law and checking on her. Even though she asked for something in return for helping my family, it cannot be denied that if it weren't for her money, my father might not be alive today. Speaking of my father, his heart surgery was successful, and he is currently recovering at the hotel where they are staying. Next month, they will return to continue his recovery here.
I was about to leave through the door when I heard Alexander's voice behind me. When I turned around, I saw him coming down the stairs.
"I said where are you going?" he asked again when I didn't answer his question.
"I thought we agreed not to interfere with each other? That's stated in our contract agreement. Don't tell me you're going to breach it?" I replied to him seriously. He seems to forget that he put that in the contract.
"There's nothing in the contract that says asking questions is prohibited. I'm just asking and I didn't say I would interfere," he quickly replied.
I couldn't respond to him immediately because what he said was true. "I'm going out to meet my friend. Do you want to come along?"
"Meet your friend? Who? The doctor or your gay friend?" he asked casually, but the way he said it didn't sit well with me.
"It's none of your business who I'm meeting," I replied. Since when did he become so nosy about which friend I'm with?
"Don't you have work to do? What was your job before my mom picked you up and married you off to me?" he asked with a hint of insult again. He really speaks harshly. He doesn't care whether his words hurt or not. Well, he does hate me. So he doesn't care if I get hurt by the things he says.
"I don't need to work, Alexander. I married a rich person so I should enjoy myself with the luck I'm experiencing now. I should take advantage of the opportunity while I'm still your wife," I replied teasingly to him. I can't believe he doesn't know what my job is. What kind of husband doesn't know what his wife's job is? But why would he know when he doesn't ask me and I haven't told him either? We're just a fake couple, and we'll separate after six months, so there is no need to tell him about anything related to me. And he's not interested in knowing things about me either.
"Shameless! I can't really wait to divorce you," he said with sharp eyes before going back up the stairs.
I can't help but follow him with a sad look. There's regret in my heart that our former closeness has now turned into hostility towards each other. If only that night hadn't happened. If only he had properly rejected me. I wouldn't have forced myself on him if he had told me he liked another girl and not me. Not the way he humiliated me in front of the whole school, which greatly affected my life.
I took a deep breath and shook my head firmly. Why am I thinking about that? I just continued my interrupted exit through the door.
When I arrived at my mother-in-law's house, I immediately pressed the doorbell for a helper to come out. I frowned because I'd been ringing the doorbell outside for more than five minutes, but not even a shadow of a maid came out to open the door for me.
I checked the gate and when I found out it wasn't locked, I immediately went inside. The door to the living room was also unlocked, so I just went in.
"Mom? Hello?" My voice was loud enough that it was impossible for anyone living in this house not to hear me, yet surprisingly none of them answered me. "Where could the people in this house be? Did they all leave and just forget to lock the doors?"
I couldn't help but shake my head. If what I'm thinking is true, I can say that the maids are very careless. My mother-in-law will surely scold them if she finds out they forgot to lock the door before they left. I was about to walk out of the house when I suddenly heard a loud noise as if something had broken. I didn't think twice and ran up the stairs.
I didn't know exactly where the sound was coming from, so I just started opening the doors I could see one by one. On the fourth door I opened, that's where I saw the body of my mother-in-law lying on the floor, and beside her was a shattered flower vase.
Maybe she intentionally broke the flower vase to create noise and get my attention.
I shook my mother-in-law several times, and when there was no response, I dialed the emergency hotline. Within minutes, an ambulance arrived and quickly loaded my unconscious mother-in-law to rush her to the hospital.
In my panic, I forgot to call Alexander to inform him about what happened to his mother. I only remembered to call him when his mother was already inside the emergency room.
Alexander was caught in traffic, so it took him a long time to get to the hospital. When he arrived, his mother was already in the private room, and I was wiping her arms and face with lukewarm water.
"How is my Mom, Elara? What did the doctor say?" Alexander asked me anxiously as soon as he entered the private room in the hospital.
"The doctor said your Mom is safe now. She only had a mild stroke, and she was quickly brought to the hospital, so she was immediately attended to," I explained. Alexander's face was full of concern. It was evident that he loved his mother very much.
Maybe it was because of his great love for his mother that he agreed to marry me.
"Thank you, Elara. Thank you for saving my Mom. If it weren't for you, I might be an orphan now."
I felt the sincerity in his tone, and I would be a hypocrite if I said I didn't feel happy that for the first time, he spoke to me with sincerity.
"You're welcome. Anyone who saw your mom in that situation would surely do the same as I did," I replied, continuing to wipe my mother-in-law's face and arms to refresh her.
"Don't worry. When we get divorced, I will give you compensation for what you've done," Alexander suddenly said, ruining my good mood.
Annoyed, I stopped what I was doing and faced him. "Make sure the compensation you give me is substantial because the person I saved is important to your life," I said to him firmly. It seems that in everything I do, Alexander thinks it's because of money, so there's no point in contradicting what he said.
Alexander didn't immediately respond to me; instead, his face darkened and he clenched his jaw. He stared at me for a few seconds before speaking again.
"Don't worry because I will make sure you'll be pleased with the compensation fee I will give you."
"It's a deal," I quickly replied. "Since you're already here, you can watch over your mom, and my friends whom I'm meeting are still waiting for me."
I didn't wait for him to respond and hurriedly left the room. After stepping out of the door, I didn't leave immediately; instead, I leaned against the door frame. It seems Alexander's prejudice against me is really deep.
