Chapter 23

Elara Pov I informed Liam that I wouldn't be able to go to work for now because I would be watching over my mother-in-law in the hospital. Even though I am only married on paper with her son, in the eyes of people, we are still a couple. It doesn't look good if I don't watch over her in the hospital since I am the spouse of her only child. "It's alright, bestie. I can handle the work here. So how is your mother-in-law?" said Liam after I informed him about what happened and why I couldn't go to work for now. "She's okay now. She's just recovering. The doctor said it was good that my mother-in-law was brought to the hospital immediately, so her life was saved. Although it was just a mild stroke, if she hadn't been brought to the hospital right away, her life would have been in danger or she might have died." "That Alexander owes you a debt of gratitude because you are the savior of his mother. You should charge him for it," said Liam while sitting in the swivel chair with his legs crossed. I went to the office to tell him personally about this matter. "I don't need to mention that because he told me that after we divorce, he would give me compensation that would make me happy." I couldn't help but feel annoyed when I remembered what he said. Everything for him has a price. "Oh, that's even better. The money he will give you can be added to the money his mother gave you, which your parents used, especially your father," commented Liam. I just didn't comment further on that matter. "I won't stay here for long. I still need to go to my mother-in-law's house to get her things that I'll bring to the hospital," I said goodbye to my friend. "Take good care of your mother-in-law, bestie. Who knows, if you and her son get divorced, she might not ask you to pay back that money in exchange for taking care of her," she added as I walked out of her office. I just shook my head and didn't respond to what she said. I went home first before heading to my mother-in-law's house to get her things. When I arrived at her house, there was already a helper there. I found out that the two maids had their day off and the maid I talked to was instructed by my mother-in-law to do grocery shopping at the supermarket, so she was left alone in the house. I had the maid prepare my mother-in-law's things and then I immediately went to the hospital. I just sent Alexander a text that I was going to the hospital and bringing his mother's things. When I passed by a flower shop stall by the roadside, I immediately pulled over my car and got out to buy fresh flowers. There was a fruit stall next to the flower shop, so I also bought some fresh fruits for my mother-in-law. After buying the fruits and flowers, I immediately went to the hospital. I did not expect that when I entered my mother-in-law's private room, I would see Hannah. She immediately frowned upon seeing me. "Hi, Mom. How are you feeling?" I asked my mother-in-law after placing the fruits I brought on the small table. "Flowers for you, Mom." My mother-in-law accepted the flowers I brought with a smile and smelled them. "My daughter-in-law is so sweet. My son is really lucky to have married you. Right, Alex?" "Of course," Alexander immediately replied to his mother. I didn't glance at the man, so I didn't know his reaction to what his mother said. "Hannah, darling. I would like you to meet Elara, my savior, and daughter-in-law," my mother-in-law proudly introduced me to Hannah. The woman must be boiling with jealousy right now. My mother-in-law doesn't know that Hannah and I have already met. Not only did we meet, but we also had a collision and got physical. I can't help but wonder. My mother-in-law treats Hannah well, so why didn't she choose her to be her son's wife? "We've already met, Elara, Auntie," Hannah replied with a smile, hiding her annoyance towards me. "Yes, Mom. Hannah and I have already met," I agreed with what the woman said. "Not only did we meet, but we also got physical," I added with a smile, then glanced at Hannah, whose face suddenly showed concern. My mother-in-law frowned when she heard what I said. "What do you mean you had a physical altercation? Did the two of you fight?" "They accidentally bumped into each other at the party we all attended, so they had physical contact," Alexander quickly explained, then secretly gave me a threatening look which I responded to with a raised eyebrow. He immediately came to the rescue because he was probably worried that his mother would think badly of Hannah if she found out that the two of us fought. Could it be that they have a secret relationship, which is why this woman is so angry with me? "So you met Hannah at the party. It's good that you know each other now," my mother-in-law said with a smile. She held one of my hands and squeezed it slightly. "Thank you for saving my life, Elara." "It's nothing, Mom. It's a good thing I thought of visiting you, so I saw your situation and brought you to the hospital right away," I replied. Even though I have anger towards her child, I never wished for her to be harmed. "Don't you have work today and yet you took the trouble to visit me? I might be bothering you too much." "What work does she have? She's always just meeting up with her friends, so coming here isn't a big inconvenience for her," said Alexander, seemingly unaware of my job. I didn't tell her either because she was not interested in knowing anything about me. "What do you mean unemployed? Don't you know that she is a fashion designer? Some of the contestants in the recently concluded beauty pageant wore designs by Elara," my mother-in-law proudly said. Liam is talkative, so he mentioned to my mom that I designed the outfits for some of the contestants in that beauty pageant. And of course, as a mother, she was proud of my achievement, so she shared it with my mother-in-law. "Fashion designer?" Alexander said with a furrowed brow. He gave me a piercing look, but I just avoided his gaze. He's probably angry with me again because he looked foolish in front of his mother. "Since two people are watching over you, I will just go to work, Mom. Get well soon. I will just come back to visit you again." I suddenly said goodbye. I felt uneasy being in the same room with the three of us. It felt like I couldn't breathe with the kind of looks the two were giving me. "Go ahead, Elara. I will sleep after you leave because I feel sleepy. Maybe it's a side effect of the medicine the doctor gave me." After kissing my mother-in-law on the cheek, I walked out of the room. I didn't bother saying goodbye to Alexander and Hannah. I didn't want to pretend with them anymore. It's exhausting too. A few moments later, I was already in front of my car. I was about to open the door when suddenly a woman spoke from behind me, none other than Hannah. She had followed me. "Alexander doesn't know what kind of job you have, Elara." I turned to her with raised eyebrows. "And so? Is that why you followed me just to say that? Or do you want to fight with me again?" The woman shook her head with a smile. She seemed to be in a good mood now. "Don't worry because I have no intention of fighting with you today, Elara. I'm in a good mood because of what I found out and I don't want it ruined." "You find out what? What did you find out that improve your mood?" "I found out that Alexander doesn't know what your job is. So that means he's not interested in knowing things about you because you don't matter to him. He doesn't like you even if he married you," she said teasingly, then walked away from me without a word. "So what if he's not interested in me? Why? Am I interested in him?" I said as if Hannah were still standing right in front of me.
