Chapter 28

Elara Pov

I know that it was only because of the sudden situation that Alexander had no choice but to lie beside me in bed so his mom wouldn't notice that we weren't actually sleeping in the same bed. Still, I couldn't help but feel nervous. I feel like fate is playing with me because the person who harshly rejected me before and caused my illness is now beside me in bed and even hugging me.

"Why are you hugging me?" I quietly scolded him. I was about to push him away when the door suddenly opened and my mother-in-law came in. She smiled when she saw our position, while the woman with her, none other than Hannah, had a very dark expression on her face out of extreme jealousy.

The woman couldn't seem to hold back, so she approached us and angrily confronted Alexander and me.

"What are you doing? Why are you hugging and sleeping in the same bed?" Hannah's eyes were almost blazing with intense jealousy.

"What's wrong with us? We are a married couple, so there's nothing wrong if we hug each other and sleep in the same bed," Alexander calmly answered Hannah. He carefully got up and sat on the edge of the bed while I remained lying down. I just let Alexander handle the conversation with them.

"That's right, Hannah. What's wrong with what they're doing? It's even better so I can quickly have a grandchild," my mother-in-law happily agreed with her child. Unfortunately, she seemed unaware that I was almost wounded by the sharpness of the woman's glare beside her.

The joy was evident on my mother-in-law's face when she saw Alexander and me embracing. She must be expecting that it won't be long before I get pregnant.

"Why did you rush into our room, Mom? Do you need something?" Alexander asked his mother with a furrowed brow. He didn't seem affected by the anger visible on Hannah's face. This suddenly made me confused about the real status of their relationship. If they had a secret affair, why didn't I see even a hint of panic on Alexander's face when Hannah saw us lying in the same bed?

"I forgot to take the medicine I drink every night from Elara's bag. I almost left it at home earlier. Luckily, she remembered, so she took it and put it in her bag," my mother-in-law explained to her son.

I suddenly stood up when I remembered her medicine. I quickly took it from my bag and gave it to her. "Sorry, Mom. I forgot about your medicine. It's good you didn't forget today," I said after handing her the plastic bottle containing the medicine.

"It's okay, Dear. Anyway, this is the only reason why we're here. We better leave now so you can continue what you were doing," she said with a smile, as if guessing what we were doing.

My face suddenly turned red because of my mother-in-law's wrong assumption, but I couldn't contradict what she said, so I just smiled slightly. Alexander, on the other hand, laughed loudly as if amused by his mother's words.

"Good night, Mom." Alexander kissed his mother on the cheek, so I followed what he did.

"Let's go, Hannah. Let's not disturb them anymore," my mother-in-law said to Hannah, who continued to glare at me sharply. If looks could kill, I would have collapsed where I stood from the intensity of her stare.

I couldn't understand it, but I felt a chill from the way she looked at me. For the first time, I saw Hannah extremely angry out of jealousy. But she was holding back her feelings because of Alexander's mother's presence. However, if my mother-in-law weren't around, she probably would have pulled my hair by now.

"Go, Hannah. Don't tell me you're going to sleep here in our room?" said Alexander to the woman. She wasn't moving from her spot and seemed to have no intention of leaving. If my mother-in-law hadn't pulled her out of our room, it looked like Hannah would have stayed longer inside.

After the two women left, I was finally able to breathe easily. I immediately went to the door to lock the doorknob. Alexander didn't lock the door when he came in earlier, so our secret was almost discovered.

When I returned to the bed, I frowned upon seeing Alexander comfortably lying on the bed.

"What are you doing? Go back to the sofa and sleep there." I approached him and pulled one of his hands to get him up from the bed.

Instead of getting up, Alexander suddenly pulled me strongly, causing me to fall on top of him. I slapped him on his chest and immediately got off before I could feel what I felt earlier.

"Let me sleep here, okay? I can't sleep if I lie on the sofa. It's too cramped and the sofa is too short. I can't stretch my legs," he complained to me.

"No way. Go sleep there. I don't want you next to me in bed," I firmly refused. I put my feet on his back and tried to push him off the bed.

"Stop it, Elara. Let's sleep. I'm sleepy."

"If you don't leave now, I'll scream loudly so your mom and Hannah will come back here," I threatened him. If he's next to me in bed, I definitely won't be able to sleep.

Alexander suddenly faced me and stared at me intently. "Do it. If you scream, I will kiss you."

My eyes widened at what I heard. I knew he was just trying to scare me, but he might actually carry out his threat. Annoyed, I slapped him hard on the arm and lay down with my back to him.

Alexander suddenly laughed loudly, seemingly amused by my reaction. "Coward," he whispered softly. I heard it, but I chose to ignore it. "Don't crawl toward me when you're asleep, okay?"

"In your dreams!" I replied firmly before snatching the blanket from him and covering my head with it.

I closed my eyes to sleep. I really thought I wouldn't be able to sleep because Alexander was beside me. But it seemed like not even five minutes had passed and I was already sound asleep. However, when I woke up the next morning, it was Alexander's face that I saw.

"Good morning, Mrs. Reed. Did you sleep well last night?" he asked me with a teasing smile. His face was so close to mine and I was hugging him. I couldn't stop myself from screaming and then I strongly pushed him, causing him to fall off the bed with his butt landed first on the floor.
